Kraft may find a better coach, but he will not find a better man. Terry has my vote. He’s the guy I hope gets the job!
I like Terry as a person, but I'd rather go with the better coach. Qualifications should go beyond a love of Penn State, otherwise we could give it to Spider or Mike the Mailman.Kraft may find a better coach, but he will not find a better man. Terry has my vote.
if he isn't the guy, I hope stays on in some way. is he a good recruiter?Kraft may find a better coach, but he will not find a better man. Terry has my vote.
No you’re not the only guyThis might be a minority opinion but I’m a guy who thinks that what’s said in the locker room should stay in the locker room. Too much “look at me” for my taste, I suppose.
Yes, He is a very good recruiter.if he isn't the guy, I hope stays on in some way. is he a good recruiter?
How would you know?Halftime speeches have an impact for about the first minute of the second half, much like pregame speeches.
If the coach rips you a new one in front of the team, you’ll remember it for a while.Halftime speeches have an impact for about the first minute of the second half, much like pregame speeches.
Seems like the recruits love him, but in this day of money ball, love takes a back seat.if he isn't the guy, I hope stays on in some way. is he a good recruiter?
I disagree. Every time a player makes eye contact with Terry in the second half,.........he remembers that speechHalftime speeches have an impact for about the first minute of the second half, much like pregame speeches.
My question is why didn’t they heed the pregame speech so they didn’t need a follow up halftime speech?I disagree. Every time a player makes eye contact with Terry in the second half,.........he remembers that speech

Best speech I ever got from a coach was during practice freshman year. I was at guard (which I wasn’t often at) and we ran a play that I didn’t know so I just stood there. Coach yells, “G-damnit Connorpozlee, what the hell are you doing.” I responded, “I didn’t know what I was supposed to do”. Then the words I kept with me from the coach. “If you don’t know what to do, hit somebody!!!”If the coach rips you a new one in front of the team, you’ll remember it for a while.
Maybe his style just resonates with many of the players. Maybe releasing some of this strategic film release makes the fan base feel a little better.I have generally good impressions and feelings vav Terry Smith - so this is not a critique of him.
But PSU came out and played like dead cats in the 3rd Q - ie, played equally as poorly as MSUJust as they had throughout the first half. If the Rah-Rah speech had any impact, that is when it would have showed up.
The fact that PSU began to roll through MSU in the late game (last 10 minutes or so?) was nothing to do with any rah-rah speech, obviously (to borrow a buzzword)
It did have a lot to do with FINALLY realizing that they should just pound the ball between the tackles over and over again - against a demoralized team that had not stopped ANYONE's power run game all year.
MSU D vs Tailback Run Game through entire Big Ten schedule: 166 carries for 1047 yards - not including PSU game (where PSU went 40 for 237 - most of it in 4th Q).
(Minnesota 17 for 108, Michigan 41 for 262, Indiana 22 for 115, UCLA 35 for 212, Nebraska 17 for 103, USC 34 for 247)
(The other issue noted by some: generally the "WTF was there a camera in the locker room front and center filming the rah-rah speech about?" has, I think. some merit. That is just very "bush" I think. I can't imagine how creepy that would feel to the squad - but who knows, the times they are a changin' I suppose)
Mine, in a Homological Algebra class at Maryland,: “Hey, Jim, nice win for the Redskins yesterday! Did you catch the game?” “Yeah, good game.” “You’re not good enough a mathematician to ever watch TV. Your job is to work on your math, got me?” “Yes sir.” Tough love.Best speech I ever got from a coach was during practice freshman year. I was at guard (which I wasn’t often at) and we ran a play that I didn’t know so I just stood there. Coach yells, “G-damnit Connorpozlee, what the hell are you doing.” I responded, “I didn’t know what I was supposed to do”. I’ve taken that with me in work to this day. If I don’t know exactly what I should be doing I go and do something. Well, sometimes I pop in here to see if we’ve hired a coach yet but you get the idea.

Kids these days are completely unfazed by cameras.I have generally good impressions and feelings vav Terry Smith - so this is not a critique of him.

I chose it to honor him!!!!How prescient of your coach to know your eventual McAndrew board name!

Hit somebody. Did you hit the coach. ‘Like that coach’?Best speech I ever got from a coach was during practice freshman year. Most coaches give one or two a game, even the ones they lose.If they had lost, this video would have buried as deep as the video of the pregame speech was. Granted, I was never a player that responded to speeches.
I don't think the legend or desire to keep him is as strong as you believe. If the next guy is successful he'll be loved until he's not. If he fails it won't be about TerryMost coaches give one or two a game, even the ones they lose.
As the Terry Smith Legend grows among fans (I see it a lot on the Facebook Penn State fan accounts), I am starting to wonder how much support the next coach will get if he doesn't keep Smith (or maybe if he does).
when Maryland had that big come back vs Miami in the 80's. Bobby Ross' half time speech was, If we lose this game , you'll do a 100 yd sprint for each point as soon as we get back to College Park, and Reich you starting the second half. Lets go!My roommate in college was a punter on the football team in the early 1990's. He went to the 1992 Fiesta Bowl where Penn State blew out Tennessee in the second half. I asked him what Paterno told the team at half time to motivate them and he said "Paterno walked in, said 'they're playing pretty good offense out there', went into his office and didn't come back out until the end of halftime."
Played and coached for many years. Emotional doesn’t carry you far, the games are too long to function on emotion. How would you know?
That’s different than a rousing halftime speech. It could also have the opposite effect and make some play worse. If the coach rips you a new one in front of the team, you’ll remember it for a while.
Doubtful and most won’t make eye contact with him at all…too much going on.I disagree. Every time a player makes eye contact with Terry in the second half,.........he remembers that speech
Or as I always told my son, “Do something even if it’s wrong.”Best speech I ever got from a coach was during practice freshman year. You’re right probably doesn’t work for the chess teamPlayed and coached for many years. Emotional doesn’t carry you far, the games are too long to function on emotion.
