"Hamilton" coming to Cincinnati....question about its casting

So I see tickets are almost $500. I guess I'll have to pass.

But I do have a question.

By what justification are Hamilton, Burr, Jefferson and Washington played by African-American actors? I mean, clearly that's historically false. I though the term for that was cultural appropriation or something along those lines.

I've really heard very little outcry about this, and I really don't care, other than to point out that, casting say, white actors for Harriet Tubman, or Frederic Douglass, or Crispus Attucks would be met with huge indignation and outcry. And rightfully so.

So why the inconsistency?

Is the play even good, or are people just going to see it to say they saw Hamilton?

I'd pay $500 to see it with Lin-Manuel Miranda starring just to say I did, but $500 to see some randoms from Cincinnati perform? No chance.

I really don't understand the appeal or why people are excited in Cincinnati, but I've never really been a theater guy.

It always cracks me up when political posters try to sneak out of their thread.

"Oh guys, I'm just here to discuss Broadway and the arts, nothing politically motivated about my post at all" :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Part of the cost is the new model for when a show figures out what the "on the street price" is the production company says "I need to charge that". Trying to price the scalpers out of the secondary market. The other part is Hamilton is that good. Went to Chicago to see it and was amazed. Bought Louisville season tickets just to get first crack at tickets when Hamilton comes (and got screwed doing his because the Book of Mormon was not included in the season show list....had to buy those separately)

Seriously, you would have to pay me to go watch this!

I made the mistake of taking the wife to a musical for her birthday one year,
never ever ever will do that crap again

It was the most boring 2 hours I have ever paid to endure.

I'm pretty sure I've seen Hamilton one song at a time on YouTube, courtesy my daughter. I've no need to go sit through it in a theater now.

I have a bootleg copy of the original cast in a video taken from the balcony. I'll send it to you.

I read the book Hamilton long before the play based on it was ever thought of. Great, great book.

When the play came along I was excited to see it. But when one of the actors on Broadway decided to lecture our elected VP Mike Pence who was a guest, a guest GDI, at one of the performances, I lost all interest. The Libs can have their fun, but kicking the elected VP who is your guest is unacceptable. Screw em.

A. Great news to see Cincinnati getting some culture.

B. Living in NYC for a long time and have seen many musicals. My wife is graduate of the UK School of Music and that is what she loves to do on the weekends. With that said, Hamilton is the best musical ever.

C. Yes, it's expensive, but it keeps the cheap and ignorant people from the audience...much more enjoyable to be around people who enjoy a great show.

D. Happy for the cast to give Pence an earful. His sorry a$$ probably paid $1k a ticket to attend. I am sure none of the crew and cast wanted him to attend, so they gave him his money's worth.

Hopefully your wife rewarded you later....

Judging by your post, I assume she didn’t....:flushed:

The real outrage should be that Peter Pan was played by a woman on live TV a few years ago. Whoever said "boyface" was acceptable, let alone "okay" to be broadcasted on national TV?

One might say that watching sweaty muscular men run up and down a court or field in tight and/or slight clothing would be gayer. One might say that.

If the thought of sweaty muscular men in tight and/or slight clothing occurs to you when thinking of male athletes, you are certain to be a huge musical lover.

FU Lib ba$tard. They shouldn't sell the dam ticket if they don't want people to attend. No doubt you'd want a MAGA hat wearer kicked out of the restaurant you owned too.

A. The culture in Cincinnati is just fine without Hamilton.
B. Congratulations for marrying someone.
C. Cheap and ignorant people? Not all people have the means to purchase tickets listed at those prices. How many tickets did you buy?
D. Pence has more class than anyone related to the production of Hamilton. He didn't deserve that "speech" from the "cast".

So these actors and the people who watch them are insufferable ********. Got it.

If you have teen children interested in the arts (and I've had 3 in that age range over the past 5 years), you have no doubt heard the soundtrack dozens of times by now (and multiply that X3 for me). The entire thing is very well done, and the King George songs are hilarious. I have to admit, it is good.

And if you had children who watched public television in the late 2000's/early 2010's, you also know Lin-Manuel Miranda, the man who wrote Hamilton for Broadway, from the New Electric Company, where he wrote and rapped some catchy songs "Silent E is a Ninja" and "Hard and Soft G" (and if that made those songs begin playing in your head, I'm sorry).

Hmm...

Go to Hamilton or watch college basketball?

Go to Hamilton or listen to Led Zep/Stones/Beatles/Allmans on my stereo?

Go to Hamilton... or do ANYTHING else?

Pretty easy decision to ignore Hamilton.
