Have any of you had a break-in while you were at home?

Having read most of your stories about guns for home protection, I became curious.

Since I asked...

I had one when I was in my 20's.

I rented the first floor of a house in Dayton's bar district.

Two party girls lived on the second floor.

It was NYEve. I had been out partying. Had crashed.

Someone slipped in and stole my TV. The TV was not too valuable.

I am reasonable sure that they were just friendly drunks.

Back in college. Guy broke into my apartment while I was out with my girlfriend. Stole my Gary Fisher mountain bike, Canon camera and case, Little Debbies, and Beer.

When I called the cops they said that someone down the street robbed the gas station at gun point and headed off on foot back into our neighborhood. The cops figured that he kicked in my door to get out of sight for a minute.....then grabbed the stuff he could carry easily.....and took off. It was hilarious watching the cops dust each of the Little Debbie wrappers spread over the kitchen for prints. (and they found some) When the detective showed up, the uniformed officer gave him a run down of what was taken. The detective stopped when he heard the beer was stolen......turned to me and asked, "What kind?" I told him Sam Adams Boston Lager. He said, "Man, I'm sorry......"

Eventually, they caught the guy......but they never found my camera or bike.....

When I was 10 I was at a friend's house and we were in the basement playing video games. I headed up the stairs to go get something to drink when I noticed the basement door was closed. When I tried to open it, it wouldn't move. Someone had locked it from upstairs. We were stuck down there for a little over an hour before getting in touch with my friend's parents on the phone. They rushed home and found the front door open. Their TV, some jewelry and other valuables had been taken. Lucky for us they weren't violent thieves and chose to just lock us in the basement. We never heard a single sound.

At college

Had an "acquaintance" coming over..

...knock on the door.. guy who resembled him was facing away from peep hole.. open door..

He comes in, draws pistol.. orders us to the ground..

.. puts gun to my head and tells me to give him my my money...

...at the time, i was participating in illicit activities and was feeling good and also knew i had acouple thousand in cash 10 feet away in my bedroom...

...i reply "you want me to pull it out my azz cuz i aint got pockets"

That was rewarded with an elbow to the back of my head..

Me being even more dumb, or maybe smart depending how you look at it... i dial 911 on my phone that was in my hand..

..this causes him to steal my phone and run out...

After a month or so, they bring me in for lineups.. apparently this guy had robbed at gunpoint a few local businesses.. so being in south georgia, they wanted him bad...

They raided a white girls house he was at.. arrested him... 6 months later sent me an 1800 dollar check for travel arrangements to go to trial..

...start off the trial by offering him 5 years... the idiot said "no, dis be my life i gots ta fight for it." even thoughtl 4 witnesses IDd him.. his co conspirator (acquaintance) turned on him..and they had a letter he wrote in jail warning his co conspirator that the cops knew... ended up getting 35... if he hadnt taken my phone they wouldnt have had him for armed robbery.. just BandE and assault.

I ended up profitting.. and i had the white girl over 3 nights in a row to my hotel that the state paid for.

I hate thieves, a finger should be removed for each offense over $500 in value with indisputable proof. We need tougher laws to get crime under control, sending people to jail isn’t working and we pay the bills. A rapist might get dong removal or testicle removal, maybe both depending on the circumstances. These are real punishments, sure it might drive up the murder rate to eliminate witnesses but it’ll reduce many crimes as well. Convicted killers could be stabbed 43 times and left unattended for 30 minutes before being sent to a marginal hospital.

Was the doorknob on your basement door on backwards or something? Typically the mechanism to lock it would be on the basement side of the door.

My parents basement door locked from the upstairs too. House built in early 70s. I’ve always wonder why the lock was upstairs.

Never had a break in while at home or away. My 82 year old mom once had an intruder who was trying to get into her apartment late one evening as she was watching the 11:00 news. She called 911 and when the cops arrived it turned out to be the 70 something year old guy who lived next to her. He had been out drinking and was trying to use his key to get in by mistake. The cops handled it well and didn't even arrest him, since he had taken a cab and just helped him get into his apartment.

Had a friend in elementary school that lived in Owl Creek in Louisville. He had just gotten home from school and was eating a snack at his kitchen table, back turned towards the door. Next thing he knew is that someone was on his back porch trying to open the back sliding door. Luckily it was locked. Few minutes later the ghetto bird was flying over and a ton of cops pull up. Some psycho from Central State Hospital had escaped.

Not sure if it from this story or not, but I never sit with my back to a door or window if I can help it.

When I was a young kid, my parents, siblings, and extended family all ****** off to Europe without me.

Long story short, the 2 crooks who tried to rob my house paid a hefty price. I’m still not sure how they managed to take paint cans moving 40 MPH to the face and show no ill effects though. Dudes must have really been able to take a punch. Ran into the same guys a few years later in New York. The short fat one still had the pattern of our doorknob burned into his hand. Good times.

yes, and the sole reason i carry in my own home. if it happens again, no police; just a shovel and a bag of lime and little Johnny just never came back from the robbery he went to commit...

china olympics and i was up at 2;45am watching ping pong sitting in recliner. ******* threw an 8lb landscaping rock through the glass door in the kitchen, with me in plain sight. he stepped in and took a pistol from the top of the hutch and ran. stunned, it took me 1-2 seconds to realize what had just happened and i flew out of the chair, through the busted glass door yelling at the 14 year old ************ but he was faster than me.

still in shock, only thing i could think of was Lowes is not open to get a piece of plywood to cover the door so i called my dad to check his supply, at 2:45am. bleeding with long pieces of glass in my hands and arms, i hung up and that was the last thing i remember until regaining consciousness. when i awoke, my wife was hanging me by my feet because i was not breathing and had struck my head on the old Seeburg jukebox when the unplanned decent happened. wife then proceeded to go outside and puke her guts up. i would be dead if she did not know the signs of shock and adrenaline overload.

few minutes later and the cops show up. seemed uninclined to offer much assistance. almost had to beg for someone to dust for fingerprints, THE NEXT DAY!

in the end, the joke was on the *******. he stole a very fine vintage model 1377 single shot pump pellet pistol i used to shoot deer in the garden.

We had a shop downtown near the Washington street warehouse. 3 or 4 teens started yanking on the plywood we had boarded up the windows with while I was there by myself. Grabbed and handy 2x4 and gave 'em my best Hacksaw Jim Duggin. They fled.

Me and the boss were working in California neighborhood when we got the drive by 3 times by 4 dudes in a sedan. About that time, the supe shows up, and he's ex-LMPD. We inform him, and point out the vehicle as it cruised past a fourth time. Supe pulled out a machete, waved it at 'em, and yelled, "You boys need sumpthin'?" They didn't even come back to say how racist it was to use the term "boys".

Don't know if this qualifies, but I saw a guy riding a horse down an alleyway in south Philly, at 1:30 am. It wasn't a cop.

You might be confused.
Only if you're a predator who likes kidnapping people and locking them down in a basement would you put the lockset so that the thumbturn or lock button is on the entry side of the door. It's no different than why the locking mechanism is on the inside of a bedroom or bathroom door.

It was an older home with a remodeled basement. But the door was one of those with a sliding barrel bolt you could operate from the first floor side.

Basements and crawlspaces are popular points of entries for thieves. So it isn't uncommon to have a door to the basement that locks on the first floor side to provide an additional barrier to anyone who breaks in through a basement window.

Was 21 living off Nicholasville Rd in Lexington. My roommate was one of the biggest chronic suppliers in the city. It was like a 24-hour fast food joint with people coming by at all times of the day/night.

We were always up late partying either at the house or at the bars (or both), which meant we always slept late as well. One early afternoon (had to be right around noon) while my weed-selling roommate and I were still sleeping I hear a loud noise. I thought it was my roommate slamming something shut. A few seconds later I hear another noise and my roommate yells for me (we had 2 other roommates, but they were decent people who went to class).

I told him to STFU with whatever the hell he was doing that was making so much noise. He then asked what I was doing trying to bust into is room (he kept it padlocked). That's when I busted out of my room and heard someone scurrying out the back. Roommate came running out with his gun and we chased the dude around the back yard, but he had hopped a fence and we lost him (not that we were trying to really catch him).

We come back into the house and notice he had kicked in the back door (first loud noise) and then went straight to my roommate's room (dude knew us and knew where to go). We were both pretty shook, smoked a bowl, cleaned up/hid the drugs, and called the police. They come out and file a report, but nothing was actually stolen and the only damage was the door. So, nothing else ever came from it. Just crazy someone would try that in the middle of the day literally just a few feet off of a main road like that.

Only other incident we ever had there was during a huge keg party. We had 8 kegs for a Saturday night party and were going to save one of them for Sunday (no alcohol sales on Sunday back in those days or maybe it was because the bars weren't open or some reason along those lines). So, we 'hid' one of the kegs in the bathtub downstairs.

Party was raging late into the night and I walk into the bathroom to take a piss. I notice it's pretty f'n chilly in there and I'm like who the f*ck opened a window? First thing I notice is that the glass is broken out and the frame is bowed out. Someone had shoved our Sunday keg out that damn window! It was an 8-10 foot drop, so I hope whoever stole it drank nothing but skunked foam. Group of us ended up driving to Louisville to get a replacement keg the following morning.

The four of us only lived there for 1 year together. Felt like 5. I'm still good friends with one of the "decent" roommates and we'll relive some of the crazier times we had in that house. We usually end up asking each other how we survived that 1 year without something really bad happening to us.

Here's a quick rundown of how our 4 lives played out:

1. The drug dealer - ended up spending several months in prison as one of his lower suppliers got caught and ratted him out. He was set up and arrested during a drop off. He also ended up addicted to many drugs (pills, coke). He's now doing pretty well for himself as a real estate agent in the Rockford/Chicago area and has a good family (they used to drug test him all the way up until his mid 30's - last time I spoke with him - and may still do that).

2. The other roommate - ended up addicted to pills/coke/alcohol, been in and out of rehab, and I think may finally be sober. Don't think he has a steady job and may or may not live off his parents. Have very little contact with him other than a rare Facebook post.

3. Roommate I'm still good friends with - became a dentist and is ridiculously successful in the Chattanooga area. Was his best man in his wedding and he married a smokeshow. He still gets on it hard with the liquor and will smoke up if offered. He's always been able to separate work/studying/basic responsibilities from partying.

4. Me - That year placed me on academic suspension for a year. Ended up working a tough, manual labor job during that year. After my suspension I ended up back at UK, started making the Dean's list (and even the President's list once), graduated, married, professional job, had 2 kids, and became a legendary catspaw poster. I still drink moderately (95% beer) and will smoke up if offered.

The difference between 1/2 and 3/4 is that we (3/4) never went down that hard drug/pills road. We experimented, but never did that stuff daily and by the handful. Our roommates got sucked into that life and not sure they've ever really recovered from it.

Wouldn't be surprised if some of the posters on this site visited our old Nicholasville home a time or two.

I know.....TL;DR

A quick little side note:

About a month after the break-in there were around 5 or 6 of us still up partying late into the night/into the morning. It's about 5AM and we're all f*cked out of our minds. All of a sudden we hear a loud THUD at the front door. We all jump up and bust open the door just to find a newspaper at our doorstep (free delivery marketing period).

Old delivery dude 'bout rolled up on the wrong house.

My grandfather had a rock thrown through his patio glass at 2 in the morning and locked himself in his room with his gun. Called the police and when they came the punks were gone. He said it sounded like a shotgun going off in the living room.

I myself have never been robbed in my home, but I pity the poor bastard that tries. I carry in my house and have a Glock in each room with big stick 33 rounders ready to go. My family knows where and we have a plan. If we all Happen to be in my gun quarters don’t feel sorry for us, pray for them.

When I was a student at UGA, a middle-aged African-American gentleman attempted to come in my front door one evening after dark.

He didn’t knock. He just started turning the knob. He did this for about a minute before finally leaving.

I’m really glad the door was locked.

i rented a first floor apartment in a big old house on Upper Street when I was in law school. Came in one day after class and there was a homeless effer just wandering around my kitchen. I told him to get out and he feigned shock. So I grabbed him by his collar and tossed his *** down the front stoop into the postage stamp yard. He threatened to call the police. I **** you not.

In this day and age, he could probably file suit against you and win. If I continued on, this would get pushed to the political thread so I will stop.

Lived in Charbet Apartments in the early '80's, just off NIcholasville Road. One night I heard some yelling from the apartment next door and someone tried to break down my door. It was about midnight and they were bending it so much that I saw light coming through. Another incident that happened to my grandparents was when they had a farm in Cynthiana. My Grandmother heard something one night and got up to find three guys eating at her kitchen table. They ran out and had tried to steal my Grandfather's tractor as they were trying to hook it up to a truck.
