Heard he was spotted in a rental car checking out horse farms on Harrodsburg Road. Keep that under wraps though. Inside information and such.

Right now VaTech is ranked 48th nationally in defense by the FEI. That's not exactly the Steel Curtain. Bud Foster is a good coach and I think he'll have a lot of opportunities but IMO Mark Stoops is a much better defensive mind. Jury's still out on Elliot.

Give defensive coaches the talent Stoops had at Florida State and they all would look great. In fact every DC UK has had in the past 20 years would look great with that kind of players.

I don't know about 'every DC' would be great with FSU's talent. They were ranked in the 50s iirc and then Stoops got them to #2.

Look what he did at Arizona. From bottom tier to top 20 defense in his 3rd year and without FSU talent.

This. Plus, FSU was terrible the 2-3 years before Stoops got there so it's not always just about talent. You have to coach too.

I can tell you that for certain a few years ago he wanted the HC job here ...little birdie inside the program

The fact that VaTech has not fitted him for the crown of head coach yet tells me that he may not be head coaching material, at least in the eyes of those that he has worked under for many years. That should be a red flag for anyone thinking about signing him up into their top slot. I do think he'll get multiple offers as a DC with a quality program. Good Coach and a good man.

If you're saying that Stoops is not a good defensive coach, that's just an ignorant comment.

Or that they may want to head in a different direction?

That's what I was hearing. It's not that Foster is considered a guy who is not a good candidate; it's just that he's too associated with Beamer, and, if Beamer is going to be gone, they want a clean slate rather Beamer's long time No. 2.

If Beamer had stepped down when they were still on their run of being a top 5-8 program I think Foster was the no brainer choice. But with their dropoff the last 4-5 years I think it has caused quite a few VT people to doubt he is the one to get them back to where they were. I like him as a man and coach, he is a great DC, but only an average recruiter, even in their run they weren't recruiting with the teams at the very top. If he hired some young gun recruiters to keep most of that Virginia talent home and was his own DC and hired a top of the line OC I think he could do well as their head man, maybe not to the level of their elite run, but 9-11 wins a year.

Then I don't want him now because he wasn't very smart then, dismal support for football until the strike. Of course the huge influx of money and being able to renovate CW by buying academics a lot of improvements paid for by the athletic department has changed the picture a lot.

He has been VT's special teams coach for 22 years.

Their website lists Foster as DC and LB coach. It doesn't list any coach as a special team coordinator. I always thought Beamer handled special teams himself.

Foster's coaching profile lists "special teams". http://www.hokiesports.com/staff/foster_bud.html

1993 Virginia Tech (linebackers/special teams)
1994 Virginia Tech (inside backers/special teams)
1995- Virginia Tech (defensive coordinator/inside linebackers/special teams)

I see what you're saying. I guess they left the ST part out of the directory. Seems like a lot of responsibilities for one coach.

Bud Foster is right now the leading candidate to be the Head Coach for Illinois

Illinois isn't the highest paying school out there (their last coach made just over $900k), but to play ball, UK would need to be prepared to make a close to or at least 7-figure annual offer. This is becoming the trend in the SEC for coordinators, and keep in mind that UofL paid Grantham $975k. Is Foster worth Grantham money? Yes, and probably more.

They may have a system where multiple coaches pitch-in, but he gets the "title"? Foster definitely does have the experience in that area even going back to Murray State.

Well having Foster on staff would get UK in the door in Newport News Va. We might could pull 2 or 3 out of there every year.

Come on, I thought everyone on here had decided that approach could never work.

The Jury is out on Eliot and the rest of the defensive staff because it is still early in their career here. However The defense has showed me some things this year. They were putrid against Miss State and Tennessee but out side those games I've actually been rather pleased.

We have given up points and yards but we knew that coming in. We lost our two best defenders and were still trying to work a lot of Freshmen and Sophomores in to the rotation. Considering what we had to work with the defense has been really good. It's the offense and special teams that have killed us. I was expecting to average 250 yards passing per game and at least 30 points per game. Had we done that we probably win 9 games this year. 8 at the minimum.

If the offens had helped the defense a little this year we would have at least three more victories
