Having Michael Rose back will be huge....

We may as well have played the game yesterday with one linebacker. Dedrick Young was the only one out there who is a division 1 player. You simply must have playmakers at linebacker. Do we have any other true freshmen who might be ready to step in soon at LB....or maybe Newby.

Personally I was more concerned with the erratic play of a couple Sr DBs yesterday. Still fighting injuries or just a spotty day?

If you watch a football game at ANY level, the playmakers are most often the linebackers. It is hard to get a defense off the field without someone making plays. Nebraska has not had a playmaker since Lavonte. Dedrick has a chance to be one. If he was on the field, spying the QB on the hail mary, the QB would not have had 10 seconds.

and I never said that is my only take from the game. That is just one place where I am optimistic that we will immediately improve with Rose's return. Rose is a solid player, and possibly more importantly a leader.

I agree, Rose is our play maker at LB and he was suspended for the game. L Gifford looks to be a promising LB but in the furture, not now. We sorely need Rose, actually both Roses yesterday would of help out a lot. We had our starting MLB, CB, TE and our star WR and the countries best return man Person-El and a few others missing for this game. We where no where near our best, which sucks.

Is it the same Rose that couldn't cover the TE and RB s against GA? That guy is not needed. Pretty stupid getting suspended for week 1.

Per others, I think our DL and CB's performed worse than the Banderaas-Young combo.

Gifford could be upgraded....but IMO LB was not our biggest issue by a long shot.

It is linebackers who make 100+ tackles per year. The linemen keep the blockers off of them and they make the plays.

Except we didn't get beat by their run game....

It was passes to WR's.

That means insufficient DL pressure + blown/bad coverages.

Um yeah, the same Rose. Sorry to say if he beat out the other giys for that spot, then yes he would of been an up grade there. Not hard to peace that together. If the other CB was better then Rose, that spot would he his.

I agree that the corners stunk, but many completions were in zones across the middle where our linebackers were both lost and slow. We need playmaking backers to be able to blitz too.

Nothing against the 2 kids... but it was disturbing to have 2 starting lb's from Lincoln. High school football has been awful in this town for some time now. When was the last time any team even threatened to compete?

Our DL play is easy to figure out and appearntly BYU was dead on the money. Our ends are not very good, McMullen isn't bad in any means but wasn't impressed with 95. They did what id have my football team do i coach, double team and take out Collins and Valentine and single block the Ends because they could and it worked out good. We sorely need a force at DE. We so far are missing Gregory something ferce. But hes gone and have to find away to help open up the block for number 7 and 98. Hell blitz LBs, disguise the blitz and what ever it take. BYU gave every team we play from here on out how to stop our beasts up front. Trag team Collins and Valentine and if your tackles our decent at all, they WILL handle our ends.

i agree our LBs played poorly yesterday, just like everyone else on the team. i agree having michael rose back will help but even if he would have played yesterday, we still wouldn't have won. we sucked yesterday, in all phases of the game, including coaching. some really poor choices by coach riley

That`s a very broad and generalized statement and while I can agree on sucking here and there, we did not suck in all phases of the game.

You have to see his pathetic little agenda. The trolls are all out in force. The lying preacher, the recruiting guru, the king of rock, and all the rest of the tards. They will never get over their feelings for a coach that was a terrible human being.

And most of them are recycled after bragging on other boards that they would never come back here.

We stopped the run effectively and our wide receivers were great. Individually, Gerry, Young, Tommy,
Reeves and Gates all had great games. Even Banderas played well.
we gave up two scores on the ground and 5.1 yrs/carry. not sure i would characterize that as stopping the run effectively. additionally, i thought the WRs did well, but not great. one play that stuck out in my mind was when jamal turner had a would be easy catch in the open field had he attacked the ball and not waited for it to come to him. he and coach williams discussed it in detail immediately after on the sidelines; there were a few instances like this where i would not call the performance great. your individual accolades i agree with. Gerry is a study.

I understand man. We would All prefer to be back there too.
Fact is we aren't though, so lets try and point out the good, bad, and the ugly in a fair way.Cool

No doubt about it WE NEED TALENT AND PRACTICE TO IMPROVE. We are all in agreement we have a lot of work to do. Saying they all suck isn't constructive at all.
1 game down. Lets move forward.

Wilbon will need to be getting 15-20 carries per game as the season goes on if our running game is going to be affective. I assume that will happen. With that threat, the passing game will come much easier.

Most of those rushing yards came on plays where the QB was able to break contain.
Looked to me like on designed run plays NU looked pretty good and tackled well.

BIG difference if you are going up against a nonmobile qb. You can focus on running backs knowing the qb won't hurt you. Do you seriously not know this?

I don't consider Minnesota's QB a "mobile" QB and he was able to run on us last year. And it's worse this year. BYU's nonmobile Freshman QB ran some on us.

Seriously gonna compare Bo's defense to this defense? The flaws in Bo's run defense have been picked apart over and over again. That's comparing apples to oranges.

And you're saying it's worse this year? I am truly amazed at how one game makes so many people on this board freaking experts on how we are compared to last year, as well as what it will mean for us the rest of this year.

Just pointing out any that about any QB can run on the Husker defense. I thought that was pretty clear in my post.

May have been true under pelini thanks to the sizable pool of games to choose from. One game under the new coaching staff might be a little premature. You may absolutely be right. Just think that's a little early to say.

What isn't clear is how it's worse this year. Care to explain?

Yeah the same one who couldnt cover first round RB Todd Gurley 1 on1 with an entire field and a QB with all day to throw? Yeah that Michael Rose. because we all know first round RBs like Gurley are so easy to cover in space 1 on 1. He must be a horrible LB...sigh

Other than Hill on 2 substantial scramble runs they did nothing on the ground. We can disagree on the WR performance.
