Anyone watching this? Never played the game and honestly zombies aren’t really my thing, but I’m loving this show. The fungus aspect instead of virus I think is really cool. The visuals are incredible. Acting top notch. I’m sure Ep 3 will piss some people off (MB is losing their minds), but personally thought it was one of the best episodes of television I’ve watched in a long time. Everyone should check the show out.

I'm enjoying it but last night didn't really move the story forward. If the relationship had somehow moved the story I could understand it but it just seemed thrown in there for sensationalism.

I get that. But not everything has to move the whole story forward, although I’d argue to does ultimately. Sometimes telling a story like that within a chaotic, almost hopeless world is a great thing. Helps remind Joel (and more importantly the viewer) why he’s doing this. Again, though, I understand it’s not going to be everyone’s jam and that’s ok.

Show is fantastic. I agree that last night's episode was one of the best episodes, of a show, I have ever seen.

I'd argue that it did move the story forward. For the reasons @SSS!!! said, and it also told us how Joel landed a vehicle capable of traveling across the country, plus a ton of food, plus a bunch of weapons. Those are not things you just happen to find in that world. You would normally need to kill a bunch of folks to get them, and it seems like fuel and car batteries are extremely limited. And, Ellie now has her own gun, which will end up being a key part of the upcoming plot.

Exactly. I understand why game loyalists would be upset (we are missing out on some great scenes) and that they spent so much time on something that technically doesn’t move the story along. But man when you have an incredible story to tell, you tell it IMO. That was worth what he might have lost by a long shot. I *think* I saw where they wrote it closer to the game and this way, and even the game creator (who is very involved) said he wanted it this way.

Didn't play the game, so I have no expectations. Lucky me.

I played the game when it came out. And just finished it again over the last 2 weeks after I watched the pilot. They are being loyal to the game, some scenes almost a shot by shot remake. I haven’t watched this weeks yet but have seen the complaining.

The show is so well done. That game is very hard and it was so groundbreaking when it came out. It still holds up. Really enjoyed playing it again. The new PS5 version is beautiful.

Of course HBO comes in with an episode to appease the alphabet mafia. Probably demanded by Pedro himself.

Well, I know nothing about the game or the back story. However, I do think episode #3 was a whole bunch of nothing. Everything that ended up happening at the end could have easily happened without the middle section. Swap out the couple with a man and a woman and it would have been the same thing, that relationship added nothing to the story. Them hooking up and living their life didn't change one thing. I guess the only thing you could say is that without the second guy (not sure what his name was) the first guy would have never reached out to the rest of the world to make the connection. Although, there are so many other ways that you could have written him being discovered. Basically, they wanted to write a woke relationship so they shoehorned one in.

Not my show, not my video game. Not going to change much about me watching it, heck I watched GOT and that show had done more to promote incestual relationships than anything in the history of TV.

So I guess the director has come out and said, he really only made that episode that way because he wanted to trick the audience into watching his gay love story, so as most have said, it really had nothing to do with the story, just some personal agenda by the director. What I find funny is that apparently in the game, you never actually meet Frank and Bill is still alive when Joel and Ellie come to town. Apparently, Frank was actually infected with the virus and decided to kill himself. Left Bill a note telling him that he hated his guts. Not quite the love story from the episode.

I guess reading all this I can see where some of the die-hard fans of the game are a little pissed off. Like I said though, I couldn't care less. Just hope the next episode moves the story along a little better.

Yeah that’s not really how TV shows work. Unlike movies, a director alone can’t just decide to completely change a story in an episode. That has to come from the show runner, producers, writers, etc. Again, the game portrayed Bill as gay. The game creator (Like GRRM in early GOT and Dragon) has strong creative input, as well. They wanted to tell a love story that happened within this crazy apocalyptic world. I do agree, I wish we could have seen Bill and Ellie’s relationship, they had some great scenes. Not trying to change anyone’s mind on the episode, your opinion is yours. This wasn’t a “trick” episode w a gay agenda, though, it had a reasoning behind it.

I honestly don't think Hollywood cares who they alienate or piss off, and that integrity really does take a backseat to the agenda.

Wasn't egregious enough for me to stop watching the show, just hoping they can get it back on track with minimal distractions engineered to tick the boxes as prescribed by the letter mafiosos.

Just going by what the director said. Bill is gay in the game from my understanding but the whole tender love story was something totally added to push an agenda. Again, I don't care (which is probably a stain on me) but I'm still going to watch. I didn't stop watching GOT and all the crap that was in that show, although at least in GOT it was pretty woven into the story. Bill being gay is nothing more than a box-checking thing it seems like everyone has to do these days. The whole love story aspect is nothing more, as the director said, a trick to get people to watch a gay love story. To me the episode kind of reminded me of the old sex research that reported that something like over half the men were gay, now what they didn't report is that the survey was done with prisoners or something like that lol. To me, their relationship seemed like two guys stuck in prison that just were like, why not.

That is some kind of interpretation of their relationship. I’m not going to say it’s wrong bc at the end of the day a story only truly means what the individual viewer perceives it as. That’s basically what defines art. It couldn’t be further from my interpretation, but that’s ok. The director said “Sometimes you have to sort of trick the rest of the world into watching these things before they’re like, ‘Oh, my God, it was two guys. I just realized.’” He didn’t write the episode though, he was chosen by the writers/creators/producers to direct this particular episode as written.

Episode 5, IMO, was the best so far. Showed an emotional connection developing between the main protagonists and had action as well.

It showed a growing connection on screen instead of trying to shove an irrelevant side story to somehow convey the same connection.

This week’s episode was great and we got our first introduction to a bloater which was cool. Getting to the shooter in the house was one of the hardest parts of the game.

You seem really offended by the Episode 3 storyline.

I recommend having a listen to the Last Of Us podcast episode 3. They do a good job breaking down the relationships within the story and the connection between the characters. It actually did add to the story.

I thought how people are surviving after an apocalyptic event was a big part of the story. Wasn't that a big part of episode 5 as well?

The main difference, for me between ep 3 & 5 was the involvement of Joel and Ellie. If they had gone off on a side story about Henry and Sam for 50 minutes it would have been the same as ep 3. A waste.

The actual 10-15 minutes of backstory they showed was a waste except where they showed them watching the gunfight and sneaking up to where Joel and Ellie were sleeping. I could have done without knowing how they found the attic, or how Sam drew all the pics or that they ran out of food and left. That was all implied in the previous episode when it was found by the leader lady, another dead forgettable character.

Not offended just wish there was a way of knowing to skip 45 minutes of background fluff of 2 characters that were a waste of time.

If I was editing/directing, I would have included a scene where Tess traded the strawberry seeds with Frank. I enjoyed the dinner scene as a way to establish their partnership. I would have preferred to see a scene of Joel bringing supplies to trade with them. I didn't care that they were gay. I just didn't care about the characters as they barely even tried to show their relationship with the characters I already cared about. Joel and Ellie.

Seemed stereotypical towards gay guys IMO. Liked the episode wasn't the greatest thing to ever hit TV though. I really like this show overall and had no issue with how episode 3 played out. WD does that **** with flash backs and stuff.

That guy is me though but I love *****.

They were both fantastic in their own way. Ep 3 is probably still my favorite (completely disagree that it was irrelevant but I’m not arguing that anymore), but damn this one was amazing as well. The ending was just brutal. Man this show is so damn good.

An OK episode. The Indian lady had me cracking up. Wouldn't mind seeing them occasionally show up. Looks like a flashback episode. Hopefully there is some useful info and not a waste.

Loved last night's episode. By far my favorite thing on tv other than some gold mining show.

Just having recently replayed the game it’s been really fun to watch. The little subtle things like this week the college campus looked remarkably similar. I don’t know how they did that but it was impressive.

Best thing about episode 3. My wife heard about how romantic it was. I told her I’d watch episode 1 and 2 with her, then 3.
Now she’s hooked on the show , and can’t wait until tonight’s episode. Usually, she detests all things horror/zombie.

Really not much horror or zombie type stuff in the show as I initially thought there might be. But I'm really enjoying it.

Won't be able to watch tonight as the weather is not cooperating. And my wife ain't changing it off the weather crap. Already had to clean out the hidey hole this afternoon.

Another fantastic episode. That story is the DLC from the game after you finish it. Some really memorable shots. The Photo Booth, the Halloween masks, the carousel.
