Does anyone the salary difference between Public and Private? I know it's significantly more but enough to lure these coaches away?

Starting salary at HF with no years given and only BA is around 50k. If they gave him his years and he has a masters, he starts at around 70k.

Pension is the key.

In the South Suburbs besides Minooka, Crete, Plainfield, Reavis, and 228 (Bremen, Hillcrest, TP and OF) you will make significantly more money in the long run even starting at year zero 10-15 years in. If they give you you years you may close to double your salary in the right district. Though I think more districts will go to the 228/Reavis model of starting all new employees at much lower pay with small raises. If that happens, gap wont be as big but still have the pension.

He was being paid well at BR. I agree with MC140 Pension may play a part. No more recruiting rat race to worry about either, you coach up who you get over there. Something just doesn’t make sense with this though. Even if he lived out near HF the commute to BR is not a daunting one, straight shot down Pulaski.

I thought he lived in West Beverly unless he moved in the last year. Has recently had a child. His wife is a grade school teacher at a Catholic school. She used to baby sit for my neighbor. McCarthy turned down a college job last year because it involved relocation. Is he also coaching football with this gig?

The money/pension in the suburban schools is hard to pass up. Maybe the Pres change impacted this move.

With the two guys at Marist leaving and McCarthy I think you are seeing that these schools are not the best situation for some of these guys.

With Sandburg and LW's having strong programs the recruiting for the CCL out there is a lot tougher.

Nolan is pretty newly married with kids and lives out in Naperville, so his decision sounds like a personal life decision.

I have no personal knowledge on it, but I heard the pay scale at HF is not bad compared to many other suburbs.

We switched gears to baseball here
Catholic schools do well in Orland. Probably at least 8 opening night starters on CCL and ESCC teams from Orland Park last season.

Marist and Rice lead the pack, but others have success too.

Provy used to get a fair amount of Orland kids. Is that still the case?

Sorry no crystal ball on this one.

But he was also the head freshmen football coach according to Brother Rice's website.
He was already replaced with that position, I think he did that for one year as a favor when they were scrambling

Lyons did a great job. I believe he had better success than McCarthy. I don't think he is the recruiting type though and as was discussed earlier the landscape of these schools except probably Marist has changed so much I am thinking Lyons wants no part of that.

I went to college with both of Coach McCarthy's parents. I can tell you that this was strictly based upon long term benefits for his family. He could not have been treated any better than he was at Brother Rice. When he told the administration at Brother Rice about this they could not have been more understanding.

Saint Rita lost football coach Todd Werent in the same way. Todd was 110-40 as head football coach. Todd is now the Superintendent of District 205. While Catholic League Coaches are paid well the pay and pension plans in the public schools is better. You see a lot of CCL coaches leave when their kids hit college age and the heavy tuition costs kick in especially when the public school transfers the years in service from the former job as they have with many football head coaches.

Good luck to Mac.

John McCarthy is the classiest coach at Br. Rice, maybe the classiest in the Catholic League. Rice is loosing a great young man. My best to John in the future.
