Share your most interesting food/health benefit findings here. I found this on cinnamon and honey, as I was preparing my green tea...

Braggs ACV - the stuff does wonders for my IBS.
Niacin- it does positively impact my cholesterol, especially the HDL. Unless the labs have just been coincidental.
I haven't found anything for the psoriasis. Well, except for low carb. If I go low carb it starts to clear up fast but it's a hard lifestyle to maintain.

I see a lot of positive about apple cider vinegar. Tried it a bit, but never consistently. Any concerns about it eating enamel off the teeth? I've heard about that, but never used it enough to dive into the teeth thing

I haven't had any issues but I mix it with a little water and treat it like a shooter. I may be doing more harm with that method, not sure. The Braggs with the mother does taste less acidic than distilled ACV. I doubt it is though.

You're doing good with Bragg. I can remember when Paul's daughter Patricia was just a little girl on the package labels.

My dad taught biology for more than 20 years after teaching vo-ag for 20. He was into Bragg and Herbert Shelton and all those other so-called quacks back in the 60's. He was all-healthy and all-ecology way before 98% of people knew their meanings.

If I had gotten onto the bandwagon back then, I'd be in a hell of a lot better shape now than I am.

Some will strongly disagree, and that's ok with me, but imho eating raw is more important than eating organic. Organic prices are getting better, but for a long time I don't think the advantages outweighed the price difference.

Thor, I hate to see you give up on low carb. It's the only thing that's ever really worked for me. I'm on again, but one of the meds I'm having to take is slowing the weight loss. Doesn't matter, I'm old enough and fat enough I can't do anything but stay on it.

The key is to keep your calories "normal" for your height but keep the carbs under 20 grams/day. Potatoes, bread and pasta are all no-no's and have always been my weakness. Sweets and desserts are easy to skip, for me. Everyone is different.

I know weight loss is not your primary interest, but overall health improves on low carb. Hard to imagine anyone whose health wouldn't respond positively after at least a month on it.

The more I read, the more the old-timers and the new Atkins dovetail together. It all fairly common sense. Sugar and highly refined flour are recent additions to the human diet. They are killing most people. Including me, but not any more.

Potatoes and bread are my weakness. I absolutely love them. I have been LCHF for the last two weeks. Friday is the only exception and all I get is a cheeseburger from the local cafe. So even then I'm technically low carb since it's just one hamburger bun (damn I love cheeseburgers). As usual my psoriasis is clearing up so I would like to see the lifestyle change through this time.

I wish it was as easy as calorie in calorie out for me but I know for a fact that insulin response is a big problem. I've been down the macro counting road only to stall and start gaining once I adapt. Even when I was in the service, extremely active, and in awesome shape I had a flat tire around my waist. Albeit much smaller than the tractor tire I have now.

So far, I'm down 10lbs. I will be 100% honest, I have no real excuse for being fat. I've just been an undisciplined and lazy ***. I've researched the hell out of it and I know how not to be a fatty. It's all in putting it to practice and getting my **** together. If I don't, I'll be a diabetic with heart disease sooner rather than later.

I can't eat hardly anything raw because I have self-diagnosed oral allergy syndrome. My mouth/throat have an allergic reaction to most all raw fruits and vegetables. It sucks. Any advice?

I'm on day 15 of not eating any processed sugar...I hear others have more energy doing this...not me! But I'm going to see it through to say I did it. But if anything, I'm reading labels now.

One thing I have become a big believer in is a neti pot to clean out my sinuses. I have bad allergies in the fall and would normally come out of the season having had at least one sinus infection. I haven't had a sinus infection since and pretty much take no drugs, not even OTC. It doesn't eliminate all of the symptoms but it definitely makes them bearable and keeps the sinus infections at bay.

I've abandoned ultra low carb as well and my life is exponentially better. I eat 1g protein and 0.35g fat per pound of body weight (I'm on a diet so I use target weight) and the balance of my calories are slow digesting carbs. The more I exercise, the more calories /carbs I eat.

I did the Slow Carb Diet by Tim Ferris a couple years back. It would start on Sundays and every Tuesday I would hit the wall. I'd have a headache that they say goes away after time. I don't know if it did or didn't. I leaned out, that's for sure.

Not a fan of that feeling. I believe watching carbs is key to working cutting but I'm going about it another way next time (the carb thing)

I didn't even know that was a thing. I just read that certain groups of raw foods act as triggers for other allergies you might have, like ragweed, grass, etc. Cooking them breaks down proteins thought to cause the allergy, but I guess you knew all that.

WebMD lists the trigger foods that go with a few common allergies.

If you knew what your single big allergy is, maybe that would give you an idea of some fruits and veggies which you eat raw without a reaction. Sounds like a crappy deal, man.

Juice it is the key to a long and healthy life. I have never felt better in my life then when juicing. I do an all green juice twice a day.

Can you give me an idea on how you make one of these?

Thanks

My recipe is as follows:
1 lemon
1 lime
inch of ginger
green apple
cilantro (handful)
Parsley (handful)
Celery (1 bunch)
Kale I use the lacinato type (5 big leaves)
I also use dandelion half a bunch when I can get it.
I will use turmeric when I can get it fresh also. I use an inch here also.

I use a Breville juicer I think is the name brand. I make my juices up every night and make that recipe twice then drink it up the next day.

That thing is power packed, that's for sure. How does it taste?

It was gross at first but after a month I crave it when I am not on it. The apple, lemon and lime really help. Also I love cilantro and I mean love the stuff so I use almost a whole bundle you get from the store in each juice. I go light on the parsley that makes it bitter IMO other then it I love everything else in it.

As I said above, everyone's different. I went on a juice fast like the Aussie Joe Cross. Lost 38 pounds in 24 days and was too weak to walk from one room to another. I wasn't getting enough protein, probably because the main source Joe used was kale.

I can't be in the same house as a leaf of kale. I start gagging just thinking about it. I should have turned to protein shakes, but I wanted to pull off what Joe had done. His documentary and book "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" are excellent and very inspirational.

Rebootwithjoe.com is his website for anyone interested in juicing their way to wellness. I really loved the fruit and veggie juices; less time-consuming than preparing a meal.

I tweeked one thing in his plan. I had one juice for breakfast and lunch then for dinner I had chicken or fish with veggies as the sides (green veggies) I lost a ton of weight and never felt better. My main reason for doing this was trying to heal my body after 15 years of smoking. I also took the weekends off and I like upper crust once a weekend that or hideaway. I felt like was a normal balance and helped not burn me out.

Do you notice a bolstered immune system as a result of this? Was just thinking that you probably saw some of that

I did this for 8 months (went on a 2 week cruise and then sold my house so I have been bad) and wasn't sick one day and I had people with all kinds of illnesses around me. My honest opinion on this and why it helps so much with staying healthy is because of the celery. Celery is a great alkalizing component so I feel like it kept my body at a neutral ph level. IMO this is the best way to stay healthy is by have a neutral ph level. I think you are less likely to get sick from illness or other things like cancer and the such. This is just what I think after doing research on it. I get pains in my feet don't know if it is gout or some form of diabetes from smoking all those years plus drinking cokes like water but I notice when I am on this plan I have no problems.

Great job, JV. Next time you have blood work done for any reason, check your sugar level to be sure foot pain isn't a sign of type 2 diabetes.

If the pain comes from cramping, see that you're not flushing too many electrolytes out and not replacing them. A wide variety of veggies in your juice ought to cover it.

Agree on ph levels. Looks like we read some of the same info!

What do you guys read to find things like this, Johnny?

I try to follow a number of health nuts like Dave Asprey and others on Facebook. I'd like to add more

I just google stuff and read up on it. Also my barber is a big health nut so he puts me onto topics to look into. The neutral ph deal was from talking to him and then I just did some Google searches. I also read up on athletes because they are into this for their jobs and have tons of money. The juice idea was from what aggiesboy said I watched fat sick and nearly dead. I have a lot of stomach problems and can't digest veggies very well so I just ate a lot of meats and after watching that I thought man that is a way to get my veggies. Plus I can down a drink a lot easier then eating a bunch of veggies like kale. I am not a big kale fan but adding it to the juice is a breeze. Plus my parents had a juicer they weren't using so I tried theirs out before making a purchase. Now I only wish I bought the all stainless steel one lol. I will say juicing is a bit time consuming you have to shop for the veggies then wash and dry them really well since there is no pasterazation then make the juices and clean the machine. I would rather just buy the juices from the store but I am not fond of the store bought ones and I am all about saving a money so doing it myself saves quite a bit of money. And I know where my hands have been and how clean the juicer is and the work area. Plus if you really want the benefits of juicing fresh is the only way to go.
