I have been asking these questions for years and will continue to do so. First why does Coach K choose to have a small rotation of 7 players maybe 8? Last question why does Freshman not get any playing time unless they are superstars? Looking back to Kelly, Gbinjie, Murphy, Ojeyele, and even Grayson Allen.

I coach a rex league team and I usually play 9 players. I try to mix in one okay guy with my starters just to give him some experience and confidence. I am not questioning Coach K just wanted to see what everyone else thought.

What I don't understand is these kids are ranked in the top 25 comingout of high school, how can they not see the floor? Why would you recruit and accept 10 players if you are only going to play 7 maybe 8?

1. K doesn't coach in a rec league.

2. You're not questioning him? Really?

I'd say K's track record is pretty decent with how he's done it for almost 40yrs now.

In all honesty, you're not gonna get the answer you're looking for unless you're talking to the man himself. People can give you their thoughts and opinions but at the end of the day. It's not gonna change. If you're a Duke fan, embrace it and enjoy it. He's the winningest coach ever.

ACC basketball ain't rec league. Not everyone gets minutes, they go to the players who have shown that they give him the best chance at winning. There is a reasonable sample size that says he is probably doing okay with his decision making (something to the tune of 1000+ wins and 4 NCs).

Kelly was behind Zoubek, Thomas, Plum1 and Plum2 as a freshman. That's common sense.

Gbinije is in his fourth year of college basketball (third as a player) and finally playing more than 15 minutes per game for the first time in his career.

Murphy is in his fourth year of college basketball and playing under 15 minutes per game for a bad Florida team.

Semi was very raw with loads of potential. Unfortunately, Duke fans won't get to see him reach that potential wearing a Duke uniform.

Grayson, up until a month ago, had the best backcourt in the country ahead of him in the rotation, as well as Rasheed Sulaimon and Matt Jones.

Obviously all five of those guys you listed are exceptionally talented....but that alone doesn't get you playing time. Duke is one of the premier programs in the country and they recruit the best of the best. When you sign up you're not signing up for guaranteed minutes. You're signing up to compete, night in and night out, with some of the best players in the country to get on the floor.

Well, Duke isn't a rec league. And you are questioning Coach K. In fact, that's exactly what you're doing. There's nothing wrong with that as I think it's ok to question him, but just don't pretend you're not.

At Duke you gain experience and confidence every day. Whether that be on the basketball court, in the classroom, or learning life's valuable lessons. For some kids it happens overnight. For others, it doesn't.

I'm sure you're a heck of a rec league coach....but major college basketball is a little higher on the totem pole.

Coach K knows what hes doing, and the players coming in know what theyre coming into. There is a reason why K is the G.O.A.T.....

Even though they're highly ranked coming out of high school, some players just aren't ready for the differences in the college game as freshman.

OP. Are you really trying to say that you are a candidate to replace Coach K If so are you saying that you will have a 9 man rotation and play all incoming freshman. One more thing since you are coaching a rec team do you have more than 9 players and if so how do the one's who aren't in the 9 man rotation and how you as a coach deal with it? OFC

What you did in high school means nothing.
The speed of the game is completely different.
K plays guys that remember the plays,
Executes them well, and give the team a chance
To win.

How many National Championships did you win in that rex league?

Ranked in high school doesn't mean ranked in college.

Practice and program building. Or in the case of Grayson, get them ready for when you truly need them.

And as a rec coach, you should know, if you could play your best 5 or 6 all game, you'd win every game. It's the same at any level. Certain guys don't start for a reason and they don't play for a reason. But every McDAA doesn't understand that. Then you get the transfers because of a lack of patience. Earn your stripes.

The amount of teams that play more than 7-8 players would actually surprise you.

I see everyone is ragging me for coaching a rex league. The reason I brought that up was because I play 9 guys. I understand at Duke you have to earn your minutes but all I am saying is when the game is at hand, say Duke is up 15-20 with 4 minutes left in the game, why come the backup players are not in the game? That was my whole reason for posting. I see that you can't ask a question on here without getting ragged about it.

Adm, you're obviously not getting the answer you want to hear. Coach K has always coached this way, and it's been very successful for him. It's the way he rolls. If you want a more detailed explanation you'll have to talk to the man himself.

I agree. remember a year or two ago somebody posted on here the last 10 or so National Champions and they all had a 7-8 man rotation. I don't understand why it's so hard to understand that the best players play.

The "Coach K only plays 7-8 guys" debate is a moot point this season, since we only have 8 scholarship players. And if we stay healthy, this could work to our advantage, as all of the players should have a very good idea of how much they will play. Where in prior seasons I think there was some questions around the rotation K would use each game.

I think in years past, when we have 10-11 very talented McD AA types, its a legitimate concern, but not this season.
