I bet some of you do and don't even know it.

Your body doesn't get rid of iron when you have this. It is not a transmittable disease, it is inherited.

Some symptoms are;
  • Joint pain
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
Who is susceptible?

People of German and Irish decent (Parents from both sides)

Why am I posting this?

To hopefully allow others of you that have it and don't know it or have never heard of it to get tested. (It's not expensive)

I don't know why I haven't posted this before.

My brother has it, he is ten years older than me and when he found out, he told me to get tested. I did and I have it.

What can happen?

You can die.

Too many times I have seen obituaries where a 70 to 74 or so year old man dies from no apparent cause.

if you fit the description get tested.

The treatment: take a pint of blood every so often. I am at three month intervals now but for a while they had to drain a pint every two weeks.

My levels were at about 700 when I started and I had been a regular blood donor for a long time but got away from it. My levels now are 50 to 75...(Ferritin level)(It's been about ten years or more since I started treatments. I'm coming up on 57 now.)

You have to watch what you eat. A small bowl of cheerio's is fortified with a 200% daily dose of iron. (Why they still fortify cereals with so much iron is beyond me.)

If you have to have a disease, this is the one to have. You can do something about this. I hope this gets to some who may have it and don't know it. I hope none of you do, but the odds are several of you do.

Be Good and take care...

I know someone that has this, but he’s never complained of having any of the symptoms you mentioned. He is 63 and has been dealing with it for >20 years. Doesn’t seem to slow him down any.

It doesn't have any symptom's at all if he is getting treated. It's the ones that don't know about it that just end up, prematurely...dead.

I have none of the symptom's now. I did then but they come on you slowly. I can tell you when it is about time I need to drop a pint of blood, which is in about two weeks.

Your blood is not acceptable to donate. I donated for years and was going to again until I told my doctor. I again checked with the Red Cross....(Then I knew. After that I can be held accountable.) I bet you haven't told them. Understand, I am not sure why they don't allow you to donate, but they don't..... Be Careful, that kind of stuff can get you in trouble...

At first they wouldn't let me, but after quite a few phlebotomy treatments, they said I was ok to donate. I will absolutely ask my doctor about it.

Thanks, I'd sure like to know. I'd sure rather donate.

Speaking of racist, blacks should not worry about this due to the native lands mentioned above?

Is this something that can be found in an annual checkup with blood work?

Guy I knew had it. They were blood-letting him monthly to get the Fe level down.

Nope,I actually went to one of those genetic specialist doctors. (I forget the name of them.)

It is serious some times. I had a pint taken every two weeks for four weeks a couple different times. I changed my diet a bunch. I read labels more now. No cheerios or other breakfast cereals. A lot of other grocery items are so iron fortified it is scary. A small child's bowl of cheerios is a 200% daily iron supply for an adult.
