I used to be a Pekin "Chink" until they renamed to "Dragons" in 1980.
Here is a short documentary on the subject of the Chinks mascot.

Freeport Pretzels is my favorite.
Yes, one of my favorites.

Took a meandering drive through Freeport on my way back from Galena last weekend. What's the history of Freeport? I was really surprised to see a lot of really old beauitiful large colonials, tudors, victorians. Not at all what I expected from the pretzels.

DeKalb Barbs! Pretty sure we're the only "Barbs" out there. Always loved the barbed wire layered on a script D.

Marist changed their nickname from Redskins to Redhawks to appease the political correct crowd.

Should Brother Rice and Mount Carmel change their nicknames from Crusaders and the Caravan?

I would be super disappointed if there were pressure for Brother Rice to drop Crusaders. Too many people don't know church history (or history in general). Too many people have accepted a one-sided and misleading story as truth.

For anyone interested in the subject, here is a very well written and researched article published in Christianity Today, "The Real History of the Crusades"... http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2005/mayweb-only/52.0.html

The Crusades were "a response to more than four centuries of conquests in which Muslims had already captured two-thirds of the old Christian world. At some point, Christianity as a faith and a culture had to defend itself or be subsumed by Islam. The Crusades were that defense."

The Cobden Appleknockers were IHSA basketball runners-up in '64 or '65. Four of the five starters had the same last name.

Maybe I am off base, but I cannot imagine there is any pressure for a Catholic school to drop Crusaders as their nick name.

Not really, and I don't think a people with numerous small businesses in crime plagued inner city neighborhoods want to pick that fight with what is perceived to be a big-time cop school.

I wish I had time to post a pic of a "can of worms". Or even Indiana Jones and the last Crusade. I'm trying to stay away from this topic as it could turn into a flushable event and I have avoided two already and I don't want this topic to take me down the turd shoot!!:)
