Fun fact from that '98 individual final with Jesse Izzo beating Bruno Selimos from Samich. Selimos was the backup at 160. The starting 60 lber got hurt before regionals so Selimos took over and made it all the way to the final losing to Izzo. Izzo was a manimal.

The number that really hits me here is 67 Individual State titles.

I remember a match in the sectionals between Glenbard North and Montini. Montini trying to get past GN back in the day was like the Bulls trying to get over the Pistons hump.

Montini had Garrett Goebel and Mike Benefiel on the team but still underdogs in this match. The younger Goebel who was not as talented as Garrett was a big underdog but put a move on the guy and pinned his guy. The Montini gym was rocking because now GN needed an upset. Montini won the match That year these 2 teams were the best in the state.

At the end of the match a few of the GN wrestlers took off their shirts and stood in front of the Montini student section trying to egg on students to take them on. The police had to come to escort the GN wrestlers out of the Montini gym.

York cross-country during the late Joe Newton's 57 seasons featured 44 top 3 team IHSA finishes: 28 championships, 12 runner-up and 4 thirds. The trophy case for this hardware alone at the Elmhurst school is about the length of an entire hallway by itself.

There’s a few NWS schools (viator, Cary grove, MS, Prospect). Stevie is North sub. It’s not that great - skewed towards their circulation I gather. No lacrosse? No hockey?
That was my thought... just like the Southtown would be skewed toward the south suburbs..

The article in my opinion was for a particular readership area. IMO, it was not for the entire Chicago land area.

Prairie Ridge should be in there but they’re not in the circulation area.

And I'm sure this is the East Sider (Aurora) in me, as good as WA's run was, I'm not calling it a dynasty.

As a Rita guy, it pains me to say, but MC had (and continues to have in football) dynasties in three sports - football, wrestling, hockey

Baseball but not really hockey. I’d say LA and NT hold the hockey and LAX crowns.

MS and MCHS for football are the only schools that belong on the list IMO - if it were state wide.

Rochester?
I mean, of the schools currently on the Daily Herald’s list, the above-mentioned would be the only two that would remain if it were statewide. Maybe HC for golf and Viator for soccer. This is obviously not a statewide list as Crusader pointed out with his example of women’s track and field, and your example of Rochester. If it were statewide I’d have LA, Roch, MCHS, LWE, ESL, NAZ, MC, MS, etc. for football. My initial post was confusing.

If there is a dynasty rivaling York Boys' Cross-Country in any sport in any state, please enlighten me.

On the girls' side, look at Naperville North Girls' Cross-Country over the last decade. Six state championships, two seconds, and a third. Eight consecutive trips to the Nike Cross Nationals. Since 1993, nineteen state trophies including ten state championships.

I agreed with you on York but it is limited to the last 20 years. I don't think they've been as dominant as they were in the 80s and 90s.

Thank you for the nice comment. Trust me, we've taken our share of lumps from you guys, as well.

Since I was a kid, when I thought of IL high school football royalty, I thought of two teams: the Caravan and the Flyers. Still do.
