MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (January 30, 2019) – West Virginia University baseball senior outfielder Darius Hill has been named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team, the conference announced today.
Hill is one of three outfielders recognized on the league’s preseason team and one of 18 players overall.
A native of Dallas, Texas, Hill was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) East All-Region First Team, the All-Big 12 Second Team and the Big 12 All-Tournament Team as a junior in 2018. He collected All-Big 12 Honorable Mention accolades and Big 12 All-Tournament Team honors in 2017. As a freshman in 2016, Hill was named to five freshman All-America teams, the ABCA East All-Region Second Team, the All-Big 12 Second Team and the Big 12 All-Freshman Team.
Hill has played in and started 175 games in his Mountaineer career. He ranks No. 5 in WVU history with 12 career sacrifice flies, No. 7 in doubles (54) and at-bats (703), No. 8 in hits (229) and No. 10 in fielding percentage (.988).
Last season, Hill led the team and finished second in the Big 12 with 79 hits, was third in the conference with a team-high-tying 20 doubles and was ninth in the league with 115 total bases. He was second on the team with a .329 batting average and 41 runs scored and added four home runs and 36 RBIs. Hill's 240 at-bats led the team and ranked No. 7 in a single season in team history. In conference action, he was sixth in the Big 12 with a .364 batting average and finished second with 36 hits and sixth with nine doubles. His five sacrifice flies was tied for No. 7 in a single season in team history, and he added a team-best four game-winning hits.
As a sophomore in 2017, Hill played in and started 61 games, which was tied for No. 2 in team history in a single season in starts and No. 3 in games played, and had 244 at-bats, which ranked No. 4 in a single season in program history. He led the team with 75 hits, tied for the team lead with 46 RBIs and 14 doubles, was fourth on the team with a .307 batting average and added four home runs and a triple. Hill also led the team with seven game-winning RBIs.
To earn multiple freshman All-America honors, Hill led the team with 75 hits, 20 doubles, four triples and 112 total bases in 2016. He finished second on the squad with a .342 average, 32 walks, 49 runs scored, a .511 slugging percentage and a .420 on-base percentage and was third on the team with 40 RBIs. Hill added five sacrifice flies, tied for No. 7 in a single season in team history at the time, and led the team with six game-winning RBIs and 27 multi-hit games.
Along with the Preseason All-Big 12 Team, the conference released its TV schedule for the 2019 baseball season. The Mountaineers’ matchup at Oklahoma State on Friday, April 5, will air on FCS, with first pitch set for 7 p.m. ET, in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
For the seventh consecutive year, the entire Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship, leading up to Sunday’s championship game, will be televised on FOX College Sports (FCS), while the championship game will air on FOX Sports Regional Networks (FSN). This year’s postseason event is set for May 22-26 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.
