Hillary Clinton says she likely will never run for office again
After a long career in politics, Hillary Clinton says she is not likely to run for office again.
The former Secretary of State and New York senator discussed her future during an extended interview at the Women in the World Summit on Thursday.
“I am looking at doing interesting things,” she told New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof. “I don't think that will include ever running for office again.”
Clinton made a brief retreat from public life after her presidential loss in November, but has recently become more active in making appearances and criticizing President Trump.
She was pressed by Kristof, in her first extended interview this year, about rumors that she may run for mayor of New York City, challenging her election supporter Bill De Blasio.
Clinton visibly recoiled from the suggestion, patting her heart as she said that she did not have any definitive plans of any kind.
She said that she is “focused on doing some things that I can help make a difference with” including supporting young people, getting more women involved in politics and helping get more women into politics.
Kristof also brought up the possibility of heading an organization such as the United Nations’ humanitarian UNICEF program, and Clinton said that she was interested in working in “all sectors of society” including non-profit groups.
Her dismissal of another run for office comes after her daughter Chelsea told CBS earlier this week that she did not think her mother would throw her hat in the ring for any future contest.
The former First Lady, who also said she wanted to spend more time with her grandchildren, also addressed a range of issues including the Syrian civil war and this week’s gas attacks blamed on the Bashar Assad regime.
“I really believe that we should’ve and still should take out his airfields and prevent him from being able to bbomb innocent people and drop sarin gas on them,” she said.
Clinton also addressed alleged Russian interference attempting to swing the election towards her 2016 opponent, President Trump.
She said that she was “deeply concerned” about the supposed meddling and that Congress should look into it or Russian government actions towards U.S. democracy “will be back.”
