The History of the Middle Finger:
Well, now......here's something I never knew before, and now that I know it, I feel compelled to send it on to my more intelligent friends in the hope that they, too, will feel edified.
Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore they would be incapable of fighting in the future. This famous English longbow was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as 'plucking the yew' (or 'pluck yew').
Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and they began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, See, we can still pluck yew! Since 'pluck yew' is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodentalfricative 'F', and thus the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger-salute! It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as 'giving the bird.'
And yew thought yew knew every plucking thing. Didn't yew! 😛

Epic history fail. Do not believe everything you read on the Internet.

I remember my history teacher 30 years ago telling this one. Of course, we believed it and had no idea he was messing with us.

I'm pretty sure that I hadn't seen a bird flipped until I was in 6th grade. I'm also pretty sure that for the next two years, my internal definition of what it meant was, "All the bad words combined".

The 80s mike drop pre-mike drops.

We had a 10th grade biology teacher that witnessed a bird flip in my class and went off on us. It wasn't a "How bad you were" lecture.

It was a "How dare you think that you kids invented this and no one over 25 knows what this is about" lecture.

In our defense, it was never seen in our view of adult society. I never saw my parents or their friends do it. Never on tv and only in R rated movies with youthful hi-jinx.

Of course we thought our generation made it up.

As the last wave uncovers the new fangled way.

when you give someone the middle finger, they want to fight. When you moon them, the just laugh.
