I am sure this has been discussed before but I need to see it again.

How in the name of Bill Gates can I improve my wifi speeds in my home. Just got a new modem and router from Spectrum and my PC upstairs is still slow online. It is a 2 story house and the modem and router are downstairs almost directly below my office and the wifi still sucks. I was told 5g does not like to go through walls, but the 2g is not doing the job.

Seems like the route to go is an extender, but I am not familiar with them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What do you have on your PC to get the wireless signal? I’m assuming it’s a desktop.

When I first got my spectrum installed, I was getting about half the speed I was supposed to. I did speed tests in different areas of the house after shutting down all the devices, TVs, etc to make sure I was getting an accurate reading. At first, Spectrum tried to tell me it was latency, but losing about 30-40mb 10 feet away isn’t latency. After three service calls, and threatening to discontinue service, they gave me a new modem and it fixed the issue. It may just be a bad modem.

Don’t pay spectrum for that trash. Go out and get a Motorola surfboard and net gear nighthawk. Bump up your speed to at least 50 and use the 5G on the night hawk. Overkill!!

Decent pipeline.. Mesh networking or if you're up to the task, your own SOHO network.

The key is you no longer can get by with one access point (wireless router), you need several.

We have a mesh network, a tri-band router, and I bought my own modem. Everything works now. You also should download a signal check on your phone and see what bands your neighbors are using and choose bands they are not using.

I got the Orbi (which is made by Netgear) and it has been tremendous. It really improved our speeds on the first floor of our house, and the far end (away from the router which is on the second floor). It was $200 at Costco.

So you use that along with the modem and router or is this independent and I can tell Spectrum to piss off?

I have the TV, telephone, and internet package with Spectrum. WIFI has security system with 6 cameras, two thermostats, and an AT&T Micro tower to get Iphone service and rarely have problems with it.

Don't need the telephone or TV package, but it's cheaper in my area than going with Internet only.

Got this yesterday and so far working like a champ. Will highly recommend if it keeps performing this way. Definitely working in the UPPER WING of my mansion.

I try to keep up with this stuff, but how is mesh different from just a router and extender (which sucks)? Do the devices communicate differently?

I’m not sure if this applies to all mesh systems, but the orbi uses a separate channel to communicate better the router and satellite. I just bought one today. Hope it works.

Actually it doesn’t matter how good your computer is either if the porno website is slow. Many are. Cheapos.

Spectrum just upped our minimum to 200mbps download. We have a linksys dual band N router from 2012. My speed test on my phone from a different floor is about 120-150 mbps.

That is enough speed to do anything you need to do on WiFi. $49.99/month.

Raspberry Pis are cool. I have two. One for retro games and another I may turn in to digital photo frame.

But I don’t have time to learn how to really use it. I really like the idea

Haven't, but googled it (Hell no I'm not clicking a Paddock User's link)..

It's a network based ad-blocker. As opposed to host-based which would be your own computers ad-blocking program. Not exactly sure how useful this thing is.. I can't say my network has been bogged down by Ads. Ads also seem to be more of a nuisance, which an ad-blocker can handle just fine.

Also, know that it runs only on Linux. So you'd need to download a distro and dedicate a physical computer, or virtual machine, for this.

Not sure how worth it is, but seems cool. And if you REALLY get into home networking, could be a fun project.

The Orbi system has been wonderful (I get 200+ at all corners of my house as well as a huge footprint outside the home) but my major complaint is the lack of the ability to connect shared storage to the network natively. The routers and satellites have USB 2.0 ports but right now they only allow printer usage via ReadySHARE which is completely ridiculous. The AC1900 I used prior to the Orbi had a 3.0 port and I was able to connect / access a drive directly on the network.

I setup my own NAS (lol) so it's cool but not opening the USB as a base feature when all of their other network gear have it is quite stupid.
