Figured to get a thread going with Halloween around the corner.

2016 was a huge year for Horror Movies, and I think it's on track to the highest grossing in the last decade.. Which is rare. Usually there's a plethora of crap released and only 1 or 2 solid movies. But this year we had The Witch, Don't Breath, Hush, Blair Witch, The Shallows, The Conjuring 2 and Lights Out (Sadly, none of which I have gotten around to seeing yet). I'm hoping this trend continues..

Wouldn't mind hearing some favorites, new ones to check out, etc.

Pretty much a Paddock standard that the Kurt Russell remake of "The Thing" is the best horror movie ever. The rest of the movies posted in this thread shrink to insignificance before the power of this John Carpenter classic.

oh bull f***** ****, Z

The 1st Phantasm would eat The Thing up and **** down its throat. The Thing wasn't even scary for me.

I'm sorry Willy.. Not only is The Thing a top3 horror movie (#1 for me).. but it's also one of the greatest movies ever.

Meh, you pussies would get scared over a dandelion wearing a Frankenstein mask.

The Thing was great. But not top 3. Sorry. Nope.

Just watched this one. Pretty B-rate but some good gore and some of the best racks I've seen in a horror movie. So much bounce..

edit: Sorry, not really any photos online.

The With was a tremendous movie. One of my favorites in quite some time. The way they marketed it/presented it was a bit off, though. Not "scary", really
One of the best atmospheric horror films in quite some time. Top 3 film this year for me.

I've seen The Thing so many times it's not the least bit scary. But I don't care. It's almost near perfect. Kurt Russell, the music, the isolated setting, The one liners, The special EFX, The creature, the entire premise, diabeetus, one of the most underrated actors ever in Keith David, some of the best one-sheets..

One of the best whodunnits ever, so many different horror elements at play and an ending for the ages..

I also want to go on record saying that Halloween/Mike Meyers is my least favorite of the slashers.

Jason, Freddy, Ghostface, Pinhead > Mike Meyers. Not a popular take, I know. Aside from Halloween starting the slasher trend, they never did much for me. They also churned out, again IMO, some of the worst movies in the slasher genre. 6, H20 and 8? Awful. And Rob Zombies' didn't fare too well either.

Some of the scenes in "An American Werewolf in London" scared the **** out of me. In particular when they're out in the bog and they hear it coming:

As you can tell I prefer more of the monster type horror rather than the slasher ghost type stuff.

I have never been scared by a movie although seeing Phantasm at 13 probably messed me up.

With that said, I saw a documentary on the Zodiac Killer that scares me to this day.

Event Horizon was pretty damn scary. Hellraiser also.. Any thing that deals with eternal damnation..

I remember watching Horror movies at sleepovers with friends when we were like 12.. Evil Dead was one.. Holy moly.

Flash forward to recent times. Saw Paranormal Activity the day it came out and early on there was still buzz that it may have been real. Idk why I bought into that.. I was like 24.. But I did.. And then I didn't sleep for 2 weeks.

That movie was great in theaters. Exceptional. The whole movie was practically distraught walking out.

For the film buffs in here the most beautifully shot horror movie of all time is Brotherhood of the Wolf from 2001. Amazing how many people missed this one:

The horror genre has always been my favorite movie type. Horror seemed to thrive in the 70's and 80's. There isn't near the quality of horror flicks out these days. Most of the new stuff tends to be more action than horror.

For slasher type movies, I loved the early Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street movies. I'm a big Freddy Krueger fan. Also the first 2 Halloween movies were good. All those series went downhill after a couple movies.

I also enjoy sci-fi horror movies. You have to put Alien up near or at the top of those movies. The Thing is up there with it. It wasn't really scary, but I enjoyed Maximum Overdrive. Invasion of the Body Snatchers was another good sci-fi horror film.

Then you have the monster movie films. I liked all of the Living Dead movies (Night of, Day of, Dawn of, Return of). I wasn't a big fan of vampire movies, but i did like The Lost Boys. American Werewolf in London/Paris and Silver Bullet were my favorite werewolf films.

Last but not least you have the demonic type horror films. The movie that probably affected me the most as a kid was The Exorcist. While they weren't really scary, I enjoyed the Evil Dead series. The early Hellraiser movies were solid. A cheesy one that I liked was The Gate. Phantasm wasn't bad either (threw that in for you Willy).

Those are just a handful of horror movies I enjoyed and I probably am leaving a few off. Those are what I could think of off the top of my head.

70's and the 80's were great, not only for classics, but for new special effects, for the cheese movies, etc.

So happy to see a revival the last few years. I can't stand the spooky haunted house/haunted object/haunted child BS that's been played out over, and over, and over again.

Southbound was a great one from this year. Anthology type film and almost every story was great.

The Human Centipede was great first time I watched it.

Have a tradition every Hallowern season to watch House of 1,000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects. I really like Rob Zombie's horror films. Salem sucked ***, however.
He has that new one out about clowns. 31 I think it's called.

I've enjoyed a few of the new ones. It Follows might be my favorite of the recent crop, but I also really liked The Babbadook and Goodnight Mommy. Don't Breathe was very good (though probably more Hitchcockian suspense than horror), and I also loved the cult thriller The Invitation.

For just weird scares I highly recommend The Early Short Films of David Lynch (Criterion put out the DVD a few years ago, I think). These are not your typical horror movies but they're bizarre in an almost aggressive way. I *believe* one of his first short movies, "The Alphabet," is on YouTube. Be careful with these though because they'll screw with your head.

Goodnight mommy was great. But european horror isn't for everyone. A close friend of mine hated it. Loved all three of those you mentioned. I haven't watched Don't Breathe yet but I've heard and read good things. And nice reference to Lynch's early work. But in my opinion most of his films are nightmarish.

Are you going to let some one else pick one or are you trying to corner the market.:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
