Funny story about horror vs ***** (maybe...maybe not).

Set up: Friend of mine has been on the Fire Dept for almost 20 years, after he had been on for about 6 months or so I asked him....
Me: "Hey have you heard any good horror stories from any of the other fire houses"

Him: Oh yeah, over at 19's*, they talk about this girl that stops by and gives them all blow jobs...

Me: I said HOR-ROR, not ***** stories...

Still laugh every time I tell it....

*made up Fire Station number/house for the purposes of this story

Here's exhibit A of why I was never wowed by The Conjuring and the other Horror-lite movies of tit's kind. I saw a scene today that everyone LOVES of "The Lipstick Demon" hiding behind one of the main characters. Didn't see it coming, kinda spooky. Sure. But it wasn't anything ground breaking and you never felt that the characters were in TRUE danger.

Enter Crypt TV and their showpiece "Look-See". A fraction of the budget, great creature design, and something that feels truly threatening.

And not to continue ragging on James Wan and the Conjuring movie universe, because they're decent movies.. but if I had to pick between a sorta creepy doll that rarely moves and *SPOILER* three Chuckys busting each other's balls in the most meta horror scene I can think of...

..Give me the Chuckys and a movie that got about 1/10th the attention as the sleepy Annabelle movies.

It Follows, was a very big disappointment. Like terribly disappointing.

I think it's really good. I also like The Babadook but I know several people who don't like it.

With horror movies there are different types that people enjoy. I typically like slasher films more than haunting/ghost movies.

Hype is another factor. The less I know or hear about a movie the better. I have no doubt that I would have liked Hereditary more if I hadn't already read several articles about how great it is. To me it's just OK.

Watched Curve last night. I thought i was really good. Go figure, i was not expecting much, turned out pretty good. Ending could have had a little more drama, but all in all, it kept me occupied.

I know Halloween came and went a few weeks ago, but if you love horror movies, they can be fun pretty much year around. Anyway, in the last couple of nights, I've found a couple that I really enjoyed.

First is a movie that came out about 3 months ago and was a video on demand release called Summer of 84. The best way I could describe it is that it is sort of a Stranger Things meets Disturbia. Set in summer 1984, a group of four 15 y/o boys begin to suspect that their cop neighbor is responsible for several missing/dead children that has plagued their small town. Of course they start investigating and it provides some good, tense scenes building to what I thought was a great ending.

The second movie is a Friday the 13th fan made film titled Never Hike Alone. This one came out in October of '17 and is free to watch on YouTube. It is very short, only about 53 minutes in runtime and that is really my only negative. Would have loved to have seen a full length 90 minute movie but i heard the creator say that their budget was only around 40K and that included a kickstarter with fan donations. Anyway, if you grew up with and/or love the originals, I think you will love this. Personally, I was blown away and if I were to rank the films in the series, I'd probably put it right after the first four films. It even has a cool cameo from an original Friday the 13th character at the end of the movie. Definitely check this one out if you enjoy the series.

Bringing this thread back around. Mainly because Fall is almost here and they released the trailer for Eggers' The Lighthouse which is probably going to win some awards. Haven't been this excited for a horror film in quite a while.

Anyone seen anything good lately??

Yeah I'm looking forward to this one too. Defoe rarely disappoints.

That time of year.. what'cha watching? New, old, soon to be released..

Amazed to see AMC really step their horror movie game up. Just watched Cult of Chucky and Curse of Chucky... which if you wouldn't believe it, both are great movies in the series. Unlike those crappy ones from the 2000's.

Shallow Hal. Believe me, I was scared shitless after that

I actually never watched The Witch.. and felt I had to finally put that in despite the premise not intriguing me much. Spooky witch/ghost stories have never been my favorite type of horror.

..but man, was it great!

I caught up on the new Suspiria (meh) and The Banana Splits (great kills)

Did any of you get a chance to see Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark at the cinemas yet? It looks kinda interesting. May wait until it hits Redbox.

I haven't. I did like the stories as a kid, but the movie kind of gave me a similar vibe to Goosebumps the movie: tamer, more meant for highschoolers to get spooked a few times.

I did hear it was pretty solid for the most part.

I think it got a pretty good rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Not crazy about the newer "horror" movies. I guess I'm old school and love some of the classics with Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Lon Chaney Jr. Showing my age I guess. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix is the best horror production I’ve seen. Fantastic.

That and Paranormal Activity did auch a good job scaring the **** out of me, by using so little. That 25 minute tracking shot in the funeral was intense.

Watching the remake to Funny Games.. with Naomi Watts and Michael Pitt.. pretty solid so far. Pitt is great in this.

The end of episode 5 of Hill House was a total mindfuck. I didn’t sleep that night.

The Lighthouse.. while a bit more of a drama/mystery than it was a Horror movie... was god damn amazing. I can see why Pattinson and Defoe are getting buzz for Best Actor.

Anyone get to see this yet? For the acting alone, amazing.

Salem’s Lot. Nesfaratu. Halloween. The Omen. Original Frankenstein—scared the crap out of me when grandma took me to see it as a kid.

Yes, the Christopher Lee Dracula movies were a great watch in my youth days, Crossroads Cinema off Reynolds Rd would do midnight showings of them back in the 70s, few Japanese monster movies also.

Had to watch Halloween III last night. It has become a yearly staple for me on Halloween over the last several years. I remember hating the movie for so many years, but decided to give it another chance about ten years ago and I view it totally different now. Had it not bombed when it came out, I think would have been interesting to see where the Halloween anthology idea could have gone instead of bringing Myers back over and over.

^ Excellent analogy. The Stacy chick, though. It's like Exorcist III, it's really a pretty good movie on its own merits.

Loved the Hammer horror movies, although most were before I was born. They were a staple of a lot of late night creature features in the '70s and 80's. In the late '70s, we lived in apartment complex across the street from what was called the Alpha 4 movie theater in Louisville on Westport Rd. They would occasionally do midnight showings or double features like King Kong and Orca.

Halloween 3 has grown on me too, over the years. Taking it as a stand alone movie without Halloween in the title, it's really pretty good. The ending too is pretty dark and more vicious than anything Michael Myers did.

I cannot believe you actually think this. Great movie. Tremendous even. But you liked Conjouring 2??? You are joking...I hope

Have to agree with the OP, Hereditary sucked. Really looked forward to it with all the press leading up to the release. I walked out when it was over and realized that was 2+ hours I'd never get back.
