How badly did PSU screw up?

Boy, PSU majorly miscalculated this whole coaching change. Coaches are flying all over the place. LSU has their guy. UF has their guy. Arkansas has their guy (who the fans don't like). VaTech has their guy. Penn State doesn't even have a strong candidate yet, though they've cycled through every possible candidate, even floating a ludicrous DeBoer jump from Bama. All their firing Franklin has seemingly accomplished was getting a bunch of other coaches raises and extensions.

I have to wonder if coaches are reluctant to go there given that they canned a highly successful coach mid-season, based on a 3-game losing streak, doing so in large part to social media pressure. What's the selling point to prospective coaches? If you come here, win consistently, have the team in CFP contention, recruit well, run a clean program, we may just fire you mid-season if you have one bad stretch.

The search has gotten to the point that PSU fans have convinced themselves Brian Daboll would be a major pickup for them.

First one to fire, last one to hire. Maybe VT fired their guy earlier. But yes, Penn State is looking to screw this up. Nebraska ruined their program years back like this.

The Big Ten never pulls the trigger. There is always a delay. Sometimes, the SEC pulls the trigger too fast.

It's impossible to know if PSU made a mistake until the story is written on their next coach. But they did let go of a known commodity in order hire an unknown.

I think Penn State was sitting on an 18 or 19 and said "hit me."

What's certain is they aren't getting their home run hire. They are just gonna have to roll the dice on a candidate with a lesser body of work and just hope it works out with better results than Franklin, which basically means the next guy needs to win a title to be better.

I read somewhere on X that PSU is trying to lure Josh Heupel... outside of that, PSU just set itself back at least 3-5 years.

They will probably end up with Chesney.

The only reason to do what they did, and fire a guy mid season, is to get a jump on the hiring process.

They had a 7, 8 week head start and are still way behind their fellow schools?

The only way I see this working is if they have a guy who they aren't announcing publicly yet.

This is exactly why Beamer is coming back.

Nope. I posted a thread on that last night. He's apparently been working to steer guys AWAY from PSU.

How bad has it gotten?

PSU is now fighting tooth and nail with the mormon church to try getting a coach who wasn't even in their top 15 candidates when this thing started.

This hiring process reminds me of a nature special I saw some years ago. It showed a lion during the dry season trying to find some food. It came across a mostly dried up, muddy creek bed with a catfish flopping around it. The lion pounced on it but the catfish managed to flop and wriggle away.

I think Virginia Tech is the big winner in the coaching carousel this year. Franklin is going to be running the ACC in a year or two.
Yep. At the least, they will be vastly improved.

PSU is a mess. The AD refuses to consider the interim HC who all the fans and players want. Their recruiting class has dwindled to 7 commitments. It's a virtual guarantee anyone they hire at this point will be a substantial downgrade from Franklin.

PSU: "Well, at least we ought to be able to pay Sitake enough to leave BYU to come to Happy Valley."

Mormon church: "Hold my non-alcoholic beer."

How much can you actually do midseason? Most coaches (not named Lane Kiffin) are likely going to be hesitant to do much interviewing during the season.

Presumably you work through back channels and put out feelers. Though it seems awfully rash to fire a coach of Franklin's caliber without having a definite replacement lined up. This thing is turning into a total debacle for them.

Last I saw, they were anticipating 5 signees tomorrow.

Right...UK fires Stoops and hires Stein within 24 hours. Penn State fires Franklin and still doesn't have a coach.

The back channel thing that 18 mentioned is what I was going to say.

I still think there are 2 options. They bundled this terribly, or they have a guy they just cant publicly name yet.

Could be they are hoping Bama loses to UGA, is left out of the playoffs and Bama fans force DeBoer out.

I have heard they have been courting DeBoer. He might have some interest in getting out of Bama to get away from their psycho fans.

Yes and I had no idea who was Brian Kelly's agent but had a feeling he was not a Jimmy Sexton client, and he wasn't, his agent is Trace Armstrong, so Sexton has no issue with LSU so they get the Lane.

The BYU guy may not have an agent, perfect for PSU, LOL.
