That’s the problem. That man is a walking conflict of interest. Go re-listen to the KSR radio shows for the several months prior to the JMI deal with NIL. Listen how Matt speaks of Mitch and Pope. Rosy and defensive of Mitch. Then, listen to the special episode he did when the JMI deal was announced and pay very close attention. Man straight tells on himself. Then, listen how he talks of Mitch immediately after and also watch how critical he becomes of Pope.
Interesting thing about Matt —- he admitted when Pope came on board that he “protected” Cal when he was here and would be willing to do the same for Pope. Thing is, Matt “protected” Cal while he was friendly with him and was anti-Mitch during that time. Then, when Cal and Matt grew apart (due to Matt’s criticism in the pandemic), Matt started becoming more anti-Cal and over time suddenly started taking up for Mitch more. That ended when the NIL deal happened with JMI. People on this site like to shoot the messenger so I’ll invite everyone to go back and re-listen yourself. Matt has a customer facing “voice of the voiceless” fan spokesman hat he likes to wear —- in reality, he often admits how little he began to care about the games and that it became a job. And he wants as much influence over the business aspects of the school as possible. When he doesn’t get it, there is hell to pay.
Honestly, I think you're being a bit unfair on Matt. He tells it like it is. If you're doing a great job, he's going to say that, but if you're doing a bad job, it's his responsibility, as a radio show host, to call it out.
Mitch deserves to be called out. Mark Stoops deserves to be called out and Mark Pope deserves to be called out. I don't see how anyone can deny that.
But at the same time, all three of those guys have done some great things.
Now, if you listen to his show, you would know, it's impossible to keep this fanbase satisfied. One guy will call in and say MJ is too negative. The next guy tells him he's too soft and needs to call these guys out.
I don't get the criticism of MJ. He’s a radio host that has had to navigate the extreme highs of each coach (Cal, Pope and Stoops), quickly followed by some embarrassing lows by all 3. I don't know how anyone could navigate those slopes without getting critisized.
Mitch Barnhart has done some great things, but he’s also put the university, donors and fans in a **** position multiple times and he deserves everything he's getting from Matt.
I would love to see anyone on this board try to host a daily KY sports radio show starting in 2008 through today. You have the 2 BCG years, followed by a really epic run by Cal, followed by a ha5d crash, where he crapped on the KY kedia, fans and university, followed by his termination and Pope's first 2 years.
In addition, look at the roller coaster that has been Stoops' tenure. How can a radio host say anything at all without getting critisized? He literally cannot win.
