How did you start posting at Devils Illustrated?

It's a bit of an offseason topic, and with only a month to go before basketball practice officially gets underway I thought it would be a fun discussion. How did you start posting here, or maybe better yet, how did you find out about the board and what compelled you to register an account?

I'll start. It was back in 2002. My friend, a Tar Heel fan nonetheless, worked in the media world in the Raleigh/Durham market(s) and told me about the site. At the time, Carolina Blue (now Radar) was much more active than here. I registered as dukiej and probably posted more at that board than I did here. I never really got that into it and actually went almost a whole year without posting after the UConn debacle in 2004. When I finally came back I had forgot my password and created the account I have now.

Since then I've been a steady regular and the board has really seen an uptick in participation from around the 2006 season and on. With a young family, a busy job and so much going on this has always been a nice escape from reality for me. In addition to that, you get to know many of the posters, and despite probably never meeting 99% of the people you post with on an almost daily basis, I have no qualms about calling many of you friends.

Thought this could kind of be fun. So let's hear it....

I think I started posting around the time dukiejay (not dukiej) started here. : ) He is actually the reason I am a moderator here.

I ran a search for Duke web sites and Devils Illustrated was one of them that came up first. I started to llook around the site and found the message board. At that point I had never heard of message boards. (I am a bit of a dinosaur at times) From there I posted here and mostly on the premium board. I go back to the "hymera" days of this board. Also, what happened to Atlantabluedevil and DukeCanes? blue.666?

My story is a little similar to dukiejay's. I had no idea of such a site existed. One of my co-workers at the time and a big UNC football and basketball fan got me onto to it. In fact he helped me set up the account and nickname. I sort of lurked for a while until I got up the courage to start posting. Beyond a doubt my few few post were awkward. I had no idea of what I was doing. I would love to be able to go back and read the first ten or so. Finally I got the hang of it somewhat and decided to just be myself and not take it too seriously. I remember many posters who have now left us such as boilermaker and a Duke supporter that really had a chip on his shoulder whose name slips me now. He got banned and tried 2 or 3 new nicknames but his style of posting always gave him away. Danged I can't remember any of his nicknames. Got messed up myself a while back and had to register as ponarkel. He did a great job in taking over until skysdad found his way back. Some of you had a lot of fun with ponarkel and I had a dood time with it also. Heyman25 and myself clicked just about immediately simply because of our age and we were Duke fans a long long time. I guess the most fun I've had is poking fun at HOF Coach Roy Williams and PJ Hairston. Been a long time since I rick rolled you guys but it's because I haven't figured out how to do it on new format. Once I do lookout. The material just keeps coming and coming. But most of all it's the friendships I've made to a lot of you I've never met and probably never will. K-ville or peckerhead as I lovingly refer to him is all class ad I miss his post very much. He's a busy man taking care of his career and family. . Dirt as many of you know is very special to me. I would love to meet this man. What an example he sets for all of us with his dedication to his wonderful wife. This is also therapy to me. I look forward to posting each day. Thank you dukiejay for this thread. It might be the best so far. I appreciate all the mods here. I hope UNC never scores another point in any sport they participate in regardless of what it does to the rivalry. I really don't care of what they think of me over at THR. I'm a Duke fan. I can't help it. It's my nature. I'm sarcastic, despise UNC (never will you hear me refer to them as Carolina) and I'm not gonna change. Long post guys but I'll leave with this. It's part of Popeye the Sailor Man's song. " I am what I am cause I am what I am. l Can't wait to read all of your post on this awesome thread. OFC

Probably the same as most of you, looking for info on Duke. Was on the site for a while just looking at message boards and such and was really wanting to chime in on some topics so I created my account in 2006 and been here since. Meet some really cool people on here and as Dukiejay said, even though I have never meet any of you I consider a lot of you folks my friend. I would still love to get up to one of Show's party's one day and meet some people and visit the outer banks, yo!

I only started posting last year. Followed this board for at least 5 years before that and finally took the plunge (clearly didn't know what I was getting myself into :)). I was actually trying to get some recruiting information.

I recall my first post being a story about meeting K in 2004. It was in response to talk about how UNCheat calls him a fraud and a phony.

Was always a little nervous at first, but now I feel right at home.

I can't remember exactly how I started posting here. I believe I found DI pretty much by accident. I just kind of lurked for about a year before I started posting on the board. I've been a member since January 2011.

I started posting on ncpreps dec of 05 when my high school basketball team (pisgah) was in the middle of winning 53 straight games and after a while I found this site. I didn't post here too often until the last couple of years when literally all the good posters from ncpreps disappeared and the message boards are nearly nonexistent there. I really enjoy this board! And most of yall seem like great guys!

I first got started probably back when I was a freshman in high school (now 2 years removed from college Go Rutgers lol). I remember my brother a huge Miami football fan was part of the Miami rivals board. So just out of curiosity I checked if Duke basketball had one... And well what do know here I am! It took me maybe four years or so to even make an account, I remember everyday I would come home from school, log on to here and check if anybody posted anything new about recruiting. Speaking about recruiting I remember how excited I was when Kyrie committed to Duke. I'm from New Jersey and live maybe 30-45 minutes away from where kyrie went to high school... So when he committed I must of went to watch him play about 5-6 times his senior year (also my senior year) his team that year was crazy stacked with talent... I got a picture with him after a game ( I'll see if I can dig it up) he was incredibly nice and just an awesome guy. I also remember his team blowing a team out of the water in a county tournament game, like doubleing the other teams score... But back to the story st. Patrick's (kyries team) played lazy defense and there had to of been no more than a minute thirty left in the game... But gosh darn his coach called a timeout just to rip all these kids apart... You would've thought they let in the game winning basket I always found that fascinating... But yea after all that rambling that's how I got started... I still check this bosrd almost everyday... In its just a place to get away and talk about basketball with a great bunch of guys who love Duke as much as I do. I don't post often but think I will start... I mean it's taken me long enough! Lol
One last wuick thing I think sky mentioned some old names of guys who haven't been around in a while.... Anybody remember a guy named rosh? Could be more to his name, but I remember him posting daily then just stopped? Anybody know what happened?

Well, I never thought that I would ever be a poster on here. I found this place (and others) by goggling Duke basketball forums. I checked around the other boards but I liked the posters (Sky, Heyman, Show, etc.), plus I really liked how the mods were fair, but tough when needed to be. Still, I didn't think I would ever post...just lurk. Then a few days after HB40 Skyped in his commitment to UNC I saw the Duke mascot with his headband having a message that made fun of the Falcon. I don't know why...but I decided to sign-up. I posted a message or two, and was received well (especially by Sky & Heyman), but never thought I would post more than every once in a blue moon. As the season moved along though I had to check in and see what was going on more and more. This board became an outlet for me...allowed me a little escape.

Then in early 2011 (I think)...I lurked over at THR and saw a photoshop of HB40, Henson, & Butter setting Fire to K-Vile (again, I think) in anticipation of kicking Duke's azz in the game that was coming up at Cameron. That pic made me want to make something about our Blue Devils kicking some azz of their own...but I didn't know how to make a manipulation of a photo whatsoever. Determined to find a way I downloaded a Photoshop demo to try my hand. Well, I messed with it a little and couldn't do much with it. Well, I couldn't get the idea out of my head, so I messed with it another time, then another, yet another...and voila I made a couple of crude little changes to a pic, and then I was hooked! I then had the confidence to think I could actually make some pics of my own. Of course, I was pretty slow then, and the work wasn't all that great, but I finally made my first official Photoshopped pic after our boys won at Cameron...I posted the pic below. Everyone seemed to love it on DI, and even several posters came over from THR and thought it was funny...but that didn't last too long!

Anyway, I went from making a pic every one in awhile to making them more often, and I got a little better and quicker. The pics allow me (and I hope others) to have a little fun with the rivalry. But ultimately, just hanging out and being a part of my Blue Devil friends on here is what makes it all worthwhile. DI, much like Duke basketball, is a family, and I enjoy being a part of it. And thanks to everyone before and now that welcomed me (and put up with me). Over these years I've met more and more great posters, and people on here. As Ralph Kramden would say, DI, you're the greatest!

Here's my 1st official Photoshop pic (the first one posted anyway). Barnes laid an egg...watch out Henson...Butter was melting down, Roy's Bus was on fire, and the Helms Trophy on top of the bus! Of course, Nolan was super.

Great stuff, Sky. You're a great Duke Blue Devil fan, and more importantly a great guy, and a great friend. I don't know how many times I check on here to find more of that Skydad wisdom & wit. I love how you pick at Ol'Roy, and the Heel fans. Always makes my day.
Okay, that's enough, or one of the young whippersnappers will tell us to get a room.:D

Rivals hosted a big Championship feast at the Washington Duke in 2000. I had recovered enough from the Sweet 16 loss to Florida to enjoy it. MSU is my parents' alma mater, so that was cool.

I just had to check my account to recall... September of 2003 was when I started posting. I don't remember much about that. I do remember that the FF game vs UConn the next Spring was the last time I posted anything presumptuous during a game.

09' for me. I was recovering from a car accident that put me out of work for a few months and had nothing better to do than get lost on the internet. Mostly YouTube videos and such. I think I may have googled Duke recruits or something and stumbled across this board. I have been a premium member since but rarely post on the premium board. I have posted more this off-season than any other time, I believe. My wife has been working nights, so I have a lot of extra time I guess. It's a cool board I think. Some posters are nicer than others, but we all have something in common. GO DUKE!

I started posting in 2004. I signed up right before we deployed to Iraq in an effort to be able to hear about the team from 1000's of miles away. Don't post much but I'm on here everyday.

If you are not a premium member, I say the site gives you and other service members a free preview at least. There is some good information over there that kinda gets you through the off-season agony.

I started posting in April 2010, I guess about the time of the Duke NC. I have been a Duke fan since the Vic Bubas and Bill Foster days but always considered myself a Big 4 fan but I have always felt the UNC crowd were mostly homers and were kinda of Sissy fans. I attended a UNC vs Georgia Tech or Va Tech game in 2009 which UNC lost by the way and one of the UNC female fans behind me yelled every time a UNC player touched the ball or missed that they were fouled. I remember one lady kept saying "Danny, you got fouled" every time Danny Green touched the ball even if he wasn't being guarded and I decided right then and there that these fans were not like me and I have disliked them all ever since. The thing about UNC fans is that once you learn dislike them the dislike grows every day. They are mostly crybabies and like Sky I hope they never score another point again or get another inch running or passing a football.

Back to my fellow Duke fans, I would love to meet you guys sometime, I get a kick out of trying to imagine what many of you guys look like especially Dirt, Sky, Crank it out loud and others near my age. I also enjoyed that Porknuckle guy before he was absorbed by the Cyber World.

I do ask that my fellow Dukies do me a favor though. I I ever start to sound as stupid of many of the THR posters, especially the ones you know I am referring to, please find out where I live and come to my house and kill me.

I want to say this is my second DI account. I may have gotten banned over an argument with Rosh back in 2009, then came back on after a long timeout after we won the title in 2010. I learned that getting emotional over anonymous posts was about as smart as not calling timeouts in a college basketball game.

I did not know when I began until the site's recent change added that info. I've been here ten years, though I'm not a "prolific" poster. I think I ultimately found the site ten years ago from a link on Dukeupdate.com or something similar.

Don't know how old you are, but, several of us were going to Duke games in the 60's when you could buy tickets at the window. I remember watching Heyman, Mullins, Herbster, and many of the old time Duke players. Have always looked at Duke basketball report but until fairly recently didn't know this site existed. Got on the FSU site years ago to keep up with football but read a number of other sites as well-ND's being one I read every day. I have and will always dislike the tarholes intensely. I still hope they have to vacate wins going back to whenever this investigation started.

I rarely post, but am on here everyday several times a day. A search on who Greg Monroe was and his recruitment brought me to this site. I remember when hole fans posted here all the time. I also remember John Riek, Rosh's fascination with centers, and when Dattier was a mean poster. Nobody cut into trolls like Dat used to.

I googled and found this site.....read for most of a season and then started posting -- I remember making that first post and getting a lot of "Welcome Aboards"

I really like the mods and the posters here. Seems I agree more than I don't. When there is disagreement it is pretty civil.
