How do others see the Duke vs Cheats games outcome

It appears to me anyway that many on the THR board seem to think they will have the upper hand and at least as much talent as Duke will have. Personally I see us as definite favorites in each game as we have too many horses for them if we are as good as projected.

I see Duke winning each game something like 88-72. Maybe the game at Cameron 82-50. I wish the 1st game of the season was vs Cheats U.

Others thoughts?

Duke should be favored in both, but I don't think it's unreasonable to see UNC winning one. They're going to be a legit top ten team. Both games will be fun.

The one thing I do see a lot of UNC fans talking about is how they return a lot. And I won't argue that....but Duke returns as much or more. Grayson was an All-American last season, Amile is no slouch and was a key member of a national championship team, Matt provides leadership, defense and the ability to knock shots while Luke was a double-digit scorer. UNC lost an All-American in Johnson and one of their better perimeter players of the last decade in Paige. I feel they have more question marks than us.

Much to contrary belief (and stupid people), Duke returns a lot and adds a lot. We should be better than UNC and I expect us to be. But that's one man's opinion.

I see a Duke winning both games. Duke's victory at Chapel Hill will probably be a close win. Duke's victory in Cameron will be a beat down though.

UNC has more talent on hand than many think in my opinion.

I think we can win both, but I expect two very close and hotly contested games.

UNC will begin season in the top 10 and possibly as high as 5th.

It'll look something like this:

Berry PG
Pinson SG
Hicks SF
Meeks PF
Bradley C

I'm sure I'm forgetting some but they have talent...

We've won 5 of the last 7 at both Cameron and the DSC. This should be K's most talented team in the Roy Williams era, so yes, I like our odds a lot. Two wins - not sure on the point spread. Although I'd like to beat them three times if we get to play them in the ACC Tourney. In 13 years K and Roy have only faced each other once in the ACC Tournament (2011).

That's just remarkable to me. There was a timeframe in the late 80s and into the 90s where it seemed we played them every year in the ACCT.

On paper we should absolutely win both games, but you just never know with rivalry games. Last year of us beating on their home court is a perfect example of that.

It is pretty remarkable, unfortunately. Miss those tournament battles. On six different occasions one school made it to the finals while the other school lost in the other semifinal. And then there's another three instances where we could have played in the semifinals, but one of the schools ended up losing in the quarterfinals. Crazy, dumb luck.

I think both games will be competitive and close with Duke winning both. Losing Paige hurts. Losing Brice, kills them.

If that's the starting 5 that Ol' Roy rolls out there, expect an epic beatdown in both games. Unless Isaiah Hicks miraculously developed a 3 point shot this summer, I would expect Jackson to slide into SF and for Bradley to come off the bench to start.

We'll have to see what transpires on the court throughout the first 2 months of the season as to who should be favored. If duke is getting contributions from all of the freshman at the level in which most of y'all are expecting, then I reckon duke will be favored. As far as who returns more of this or that, I think it's fair to say that we both are returning a lot. As you recognized, we have some questions - who will hit outside shots consistently?, how will Hicks adjust to playing 25+ mpg?, will Meeks be healthy for a full season?, etc. But duke has plenty of questions as well such as who plays the PG position?, outside of Jones, who plays perimeter defense?, how will all the highly rated recruits adjust to low mpg?, etc.

For those predicting beatdowns, you must be new to the rivalry. Because there have been plenty of years in the past where one team looked to be the significant favorite only to lose or to have the game come down to the last minute. So that's where I'll go. Both games will be highly contested and neither will have a margin of victory over 7 points. It could be different. But history has taught me that close games between the two are is rule, not the exception.

What? Justin Jackson is either our best talent or second best and you propose that he won't start?

The starting line up will be:

PG - Berry - will be one of the top PGs in the country
SG - Pinson - can't shoot but does a lot of other things well
SF - Jackson - hopefully can shoot all season long like he has at the end of his first two seasons
PF - Hicks - if he can stay out of foul trouble, he can produce big numbers
C - Meeks - hope he can stay healthy and give us 10 and 6 at 25 mpg

First big off the bench - Bradley - will play a lot
First guard off the bench - not sure here, could be Nate, Kenny Williams or Seventh - depending on what that particular game dictates.

I agree in general. My expectation is two very good games with the Heels....although I do think we have slight upper hand.

Talent-wise I think Duke is better, but meshing all of that talent and keeping some guys happy with playing time can be an obstacle. It's a nice problem to have from a certain standpoint. However, as we all know, it can become a bigger problem and cause turmoil if just one or two guys are unhappy. Your point guard concern is valid. College basketball is still predicated on (really) good guard play. We'll have the talent to maybe hide that "perceived" weakness at times, but without someone who is able to establish themselves there we'll find it difficult to reach the team's ultimate goal.

For UNC I think the challenge will be finding another alpha dog in addition to Berry. Jackson, and rightly so playing with Paige and Johnson last season, sometimes drifted and didn't become much of a factor in some games. He has a scorer's mentality so that's to his advantage. The guy who I think has the potential to be really good if he plays smart is Hicks. He's very talented but has lacked fundamental awareness. That said, it hasn't been an issue up until now because he didn't need to be one of the alpha dogs. He gets that shot this season. The biggest concern, IMO, for the Heels is who becomes your guys shooter, and by that I mean a consistent threat besides Berry. I don't see it with Pinson. Is Kenny Williams ready to make that leap? I know Woods isn't viewed as much of a shooter. Jackson, to this point, has also lacked the consistency. UNC has been able to hide sub-par shooting teams in the past because they've been so hard to stop scoring. I'm not sure I see enough scorers right now to negate their past advantages. JMO.

Like I said, I rarely sleep on UNC the way it is, but this year I feel they're a legit top 10 team. I didn't think that in 2013 through 2015. I liken this upcoming season as being pretty similar to Duke and UNC last year. UNC was better, but it wasn't leaps and bounds better. They just had more margin for error. IMO, that applies this upcoming season, as well....just in the reverse effect.

I would anticipate next year Duke being the better team. I wouldn't sleep on UNC because of the experience they return- especially at the PG position. Berry is legit and will be one of the top PGs in the nation- I think it's a no brainer who's team it is and I think that bodes extremely well for UNC. I DO however think that their success this past season was a bit inflated based on the relative parity in college hoops in 2015-16. I think 2016-17 is going to be littered with some extremely talented teams.

I think Duke will be the most talented team in the country, of all of those talented teams. I expect (barring injuries) to be in the final 4 next year and I know the team does as well. Having said that, this rivalry like stated above is unlike any other. We had no business winning at UNC last year, but we did. We had no business even being in the game last year at Cameron but we were. UNC has many situations like this as well. This rivalry is insane when it comes to that and both teams bringing out the best in each other. The homer in me says Duke takes both games but in close fashion.

Correct on the margin of error point. We had slim to no margin for error this past season. I can't imagine that is the case this year. So many different places to turn. Last year it was Grayson/BI or bust.

UNC had much more room for error last year and a lot of that was their depth and Brice Johnson just being a beast on the glass. Him gone is a huge hole, if Hicks can eliminate foul problems he can somewhat take the place there but that's no easy task.

I look for UNC to have real problems w/foul difficulty amongst their returning bigs next season...I see us exploiting this weakness...

Hart I agree with that thinking. If Hicks and Meeks pick up a few fouls each they will find out what it was like for us last year. I think we are more capable of a beat down on them more than could give to us. I see it somewhat like it felt last season, waiting for them to unload on us.

Exactly gotta...I think we have more weapons to throw at their bigs than vice versa, and see better mobility among our bigs...

Rivalry game so anything can happen but Duke has more talent and way better coaching. And let's face it. Duke has flat-out owned this thing for the last 16 years. 28-13 since 1999. unx's experience is over-rated too. Only 4 of the top 30 high school players in the country are still in school. 3 are at unx. All the others are earning NBA paychecks. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for "player development." Either Roy sucks in that department or they were , as I alluded to , over-rated to begin with. Generously , I'll say it's a bit of both. unx certainly didn't replace what they lost either. Their in-coming class is pedestrian by their standards. And not fer nuthin' but have ya checked lately? That problem doesn't appear to be improving. Sure , it only takes a single monster class to turn things around but it hasn't happened yet. But I digress. I say Duke wins comfortably at CIS. The Devils have won what? 7 of the last 11 AT the Nose Dome? Who knows but if I had to put cash on it I'd say Duke takes that one too.

Somehow I forgot about BIG Luke.....

He's a legacy recruit. His dad played fball there. In an earlier time , Luke would be that kid who is used sparingly but the fans love 'im because he plays hard and hustles during garbage time. The fact unx expects (and NEEDS! ) the kid to contribute speaks volumes about their level of delusion and the current state of talent in Roy's cupboard.

Funny thing about Maye who Roy really did try to incorpoate especially in 1st half of year....The way ol Roy defended Villanova's last play, "Big Luke" could have just as easily subbed for Brice and play one man zone under the basket...

Our 5 FF teams in the last 20 years have gone 11-1 against UNC in those respective years. Only a late foul with one second left gave UNC the edge over us in 2001. Our great teams tend to do okay against Carolina as of lately. I expect more of the same this year.

That woulda required Roy calling a time out and , you know , actually drawin' somethin' up. God forbid.

Actually Theo Pinson should have drawn up the play....He saw Jenkins unguarded and yelled for someone to pick him up...Roy had a timeout and should have adjusted to the look Nova was showing....Bet he wishes he would have ACTUALLY burned a TO for a change....Roy knows xs and os like Eskimoes know the Sahara!!-

Rivalry game so anything can happen.. .

That's correct. I know because I said it.

Duke has flat-out owned this thing for the last 16 years. 28-13 since 1999. .

That's such an arbitrary and convenient date for you to pick. Why are we going back to '99? Why not to '94? Or why don't we stop at 2005? Or let's just go all time?

Only 4 of the top 30 high school players in the country are still in school. 3 are at unx. All the others are earning NBA paychecks. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for "player development.".

Completely irrelevant to the discussion. But your life wouldn't be complete unless you could take a shot at ol' Roy. lulz.

Either Roy sucks in that department or they were , as I alluded to , over-rated to begin with. Generously , I'll say it's a bit of both. unx certainly didn't replace what they lost either. .

Is this you playing the gary game? Yep, calling it both ways protects you from having to admit that Roy has done good things with lesser talent but you certainly wouldn't want to throw Roy a bone. So you also include that, "well, the talent is pretty good" so you'll be able to take shots at his ability to develop players. Jokey.

Their in-coming class is pedestrian by their standards.

Not fer nothin, but what are you basing that on? Because I did a breakdown on OOTB the other day that showed this class is pretty similar to the average class Roy has brought in since he's been back. There has only been 1 year since Roy has been at Carolina where he brought in two or more players ranked in the top 10. And there have only been 5 years where Roy has brought in more than one 5 star player. So while it might be "slightly" down, it's actually pretty similar to the classes Roy has always recruited. And that's just going by stars and rankings. Let me hear from you as to why our freshman class is "pedestrian". I mean, you have such an eye for talent that I'm waiting with bated breath as to your in depth analysis of our freshman's games. Thanks in advance.

But I digress.

Quite frequently, especially when the subject of Carolina comes up.

I say Duke wins comfortably at CIS. The Devils have won what? 7 of the last 11 AT the Nose Dome? Who knows but if I had to put cash on it I'd say Duke takes that one too.

Reasonable. Not your M.O.

That's somewhat of a good point. But what constitutes duke's "great teams". How is that being measured? By end of the season results? That doesn't add up. Because in years where duke didn't make the FF, maybe they didn't make the FF because they didn't have as good of a seed in part because they lost to Carolina during the year. See what I mean? So if duke doesn't make the FF and they lose to Carolina during the season, they're not one of duke's great teams?

I'm too lazy to do it, but wouldn't the stat you pulled hold true for other blue blood programs? I mean, wouldn't their record against their rival in years where they made the FF look the same. And what if UNC and duke both made the FF? That stat would prove insignificant.

Wright called a TO so there was no reason for Roy to call one. Even after the players were back on the court, Roy had plenty of time to see what Nova was doing because there was a wet spot on the floor and they were working on getting it mopped up. So we knew how they were setting up. Roy must have liked his chances with the defensive set called in the huddle during Nova's TO.
