How good would this starting lineup be for Duke.

Of course they would be in their prime and a decent bench would be needed. Would they be good enough to win the ACC championships or even the National Championship. I think these guys would dominate. No the lineup doesn't have 5 players that can score 20 plus per game but they all have special skills.

1 Tommy Amaker
2 Grant Hill
3 Billy King
4 Shane Battier
5 Shelden Williams

I mean yeah, that would be one heck of a lineup.... Are you suggesting that of all Duke players in history that they would be the best bunch together? I’m not sure I can quite agree to that.

Looks more like he is going for a hard core defensive team.

I kind of figured that. That would be one heck of a defensive lineup but I think I’d splurge some D for more offense. There’s so many guys in this day and age that just get hit behind that arc even against hard-nosed defense.... Gotta have the fire power to keep up.

This is interesting. I wonder what it would look like if you pitted our all-time best 5 defensive players at each position vs our best 5 offensive players at each position? We would never agree on who the 5 are for each team, but if there is a rating system that would define it beyond argument, it would be interesting to see who was on each team, and then discuss who would win a 5 game series

Off vs Def (my opinion)
Jay Will vs Amaker
JJ vs Grant
Zion vs B King
Ferry vs Battier
Laett vs Shelden

The teams are debatable but I think the offense comes out on top. JJ is the only weak defender on the offense team, the other 4 are great defenders. All 5 of those offensive guys are phenomenal scorers, they’re going to get their buckets. Those top 5 defenders are incredible, but they’d have to score a bunch to keep up. I’m one of the few that doesn’t think defense wins championships. Gotta have some solid D, for sure... But good offense beats good defense.

I don’t disagree. I’ve always heard the adage that good defense beats good offense or defense wins championships, but some of those guys are almost unguardable. Good defense may hold them below their average, but I believe they still come out on top. Take the NBA for example. If you put MJ, Lebron, Bird, magic, and Kareem on a team, play all the defense you want, but I believe you’re getting thumped. Doesn’t have to be exactly the 5 I named, there are plenty you could put on that team, but that kind of extreme talent isn’t going to be stopped in my opinion

Never count out a team with Grant and Shane. Those guys are UBER COMPETITIVE, and I think win 1 or perhaps 2 games in that series. You have a nice blend of offense among the defensive aces: Ammaker's penetration and ability to hit the 3, Battier nailing the 3, Grant being able to ISO, and Shelden getting his points low. Plus you have an intangible of Hill and Battier making everyone around them better players. (Grant willing us to the finals in '94 still one of his greatest achievements).I will take the offense in an exciting series....OFC

Battier does not get talked about enough. Just a flat out winner.

Laettner thanks for recognizing that fact buddy. Its really true. One of the most memorable and clutch plays in Duke history IMO was Shane's improbable tip in of a missed DUKE FT in the closing minutes of the natty game vs Zona, '01.

Just a sideline to the above fantasy matchup, I think Redick has a real problem guarding Hill and gets in early foul trouble. Obviously the defensive guys (talented though they are) must stay out of foul trouble as well...TALL TASK...OFC

For us Old Farts like Sky, etc, NBC SPORTS once simulated the all-time best baseball teams. In the finals, the '27 Yanks bested the '61 Yanks. Sky as a Yankee fan and historian, will appreciate this....OFC

If we’re talking a 7 game series then yeah I would agree that the D-team snags a couple but ultimately the O-team comes out on top. Like you mentioned that defensive team for sure has offensive talent but stacked against the offense there’s just no comparison, the gap is pretty deep. Good defense won’t stop good offense, it’ll only slow it down.

Its a good talking point for debate, and we can speculate, but ultimately there's no RIGHT or WRONG ANSWER. To take it a step further within the context of the purity of the COLLEGE GAME, if its just one game, it can go either way....OFC

I can agree for the most part, but I believe Laettner would have the slight edge over Sheldon just because he just flat out refused to lose. Laettner and Battier on the same team with the mojo they brought to the floor every game!!! That would be fun to watch.

How would they fair against this Duke lineup?
