How many murderers do you know?

Weird question, but until tonight, when my brother and I discussed an unsolved local double murder that happened decades ago, I'd never really thought about how many murderers I know personally.

I'm neither old nor have I ever lived in an area with a high murder rate, and yet I still personally know at least four people who are serving time for murder. I grew up with two of them, but I barely know any of them. I also know a guy who's going away soon for second degree attempted murder. He's still probably never going to get out since the attack was brutal and he's already got a rap sheet that's a mile long.

So just out of morbid curiosity, how many murderers do you know? I wonder how many the average American knows. Fewer than four, I hope. đź’€

2 that I knew pretty good, 2 that were friends of friends.

Plus in 2008 we had our DirecTV installed when we moved and when I got home, my wife said that he had to come back to finish it up but she thought he was kinda weird and gave her the creeps because he was asking where I worked and if I worked nights, etc. so I had to be there. Said that our 3 year old daughter who usually loved everybody was scared of him and wouldn't go anywhere near where he was. He came back and finished up and yeah, I thought he was a little off but there's a lot of weird guys out there.

A few days later, the tv is on but we're not paying very much attention until our daughter starts pointing and trying to say DirecTV. When I look at the screen, there is his picture. He killed 3 kids and tried to kill the mother but she survived.

He's currently awaiting for his turn in the electric chair.

Define know. I met and talked with Maury Davis, retired pastor of Cornerstone Church in Madison TN.

Killed someone as a youth in an aborted store robbery. His testimony of how he was converted, got an unexpected release, and became pastor if a mega-church is quite compelling.

I worked construction in college. One of the guys (18-yo) in the framing crew we worked with daily didn't show up after a long-weekend because he murdered some dude who apparently kidnapped the guy's girlfriend. It was treated very matter-of-factly by the rest of the crew - like yeah, this is just a thing. Anyway, the guy is still in jail as far as I know.

My youth baseball coach from the 70s killed someone about 20 years later. A great uncle paid to have someone killed and was convicted.

Same. A dude on the crew murdered his girlfriend's mother by suffocating her with a plastic bag. The general consensus was "Yup, I always knew Ol' Paul was crazy. Pretty decent worker though." And everyone went on hanging drywall and waiting to get pilled up at quitting time.

I rode the bus through the Ash Grove and Tates Creek trailer parks, so I know several from there too. Probably between 4 and 8 in total if I really thought about it.

One. He was involved in a robbery when he was very young, things went sideways, and shot a dude. He’s out now and is one of the nicest and caring guys I know. Did 20 or 25 years.

In my first year of teaching, two of my students would grow up to become convicted murderers. Two separate incidents and one was a high profile story.

Three people I grew up going to school with are in prison for murder, one of them for multiple murders.

Another guy I used to do business with did 20 years for murder but was out when I knew him.

As mentioned above, working in construction it wasnt uncommon to hear about a guy on some crew that murdered someone.

Had a tenant a couple of years ago that killed some girl and tossed her body in a dumpster at another apartment complex.

Best friend's sister was dating a guy I got to know for about 2 years. I knew he was not going to amount to much but he was a funny guy and NEVER gave me any indication he was really bad news. He ended up killing a girl he was sleeping around with. Happened a long time ago and really taught me that people can be very deceptive. Some you just know are crazy but the really dangerous ones are the "silent" psychopaths.

I knew a father and son who got lengthy sentences for killing a man over a stupid CB radio.

The closest I get, my ex-wife's cousin I think, got into an argument at a bar, went out and got his gun, then came back in and killed the guy. I think Hazard but not sure. Then, my wife now, her ex-fiancee (right before she met me), killed a guy on a DWI. It was like his 6 or 7th DWI, so in Texas, it's charged as murder. It's still waiting to be tried, but dude is guilty as hell, she always told me stories how he couldn't stop drinking.

It was pretty good for me, the bar was pretty low when we met, so I nailed those expectations pretty easy and she's hot, so I lucked out.

I met David Camm once. He was tried and eventually exonerated after two trials. I guess I’d consider him “convicted once”

None but I lived down the road for a time from someone who turned out to be a serial rapist/stalker. Had that dude over to my house for a BBQ once. Seemed normal to me.

I had a brother who was murdered outside a bar in Detroit back in the 50s.

Had a niece who married a murderer after he was released.

This sounds like the premise of a great true crime story or the world's worst porno.

I went to school with a kid who got murdered. He was a horrible bully and would sadistically beat up kids. Turned out he was in middle school until he was old enough to quit on his own. Ended up getting killed in a hotel room during some kind of gay group sex thing and it was the second attempt on his life in similar circumstances.

As far as I know, I've only known 1 person to ever go to jail. That was for a week for a 2nd DUI. He got it on the way home from a UK football game.

2 convicted of murder....

* The older brother of one of my best friends in high school. One of the nicest guys you'd ever meet, but he killed his soon to be ex MIL, because he thought she was the cause of their divorce.

* A lady I worked with murdered both her parents. She was really strange. Very quiet, didn't really interact much with any of us at work the way the rest of us carry on with each other about everyday life. She went to their home one day after work and shot both of them. That's probably been 30 years ago, and as far as I know, she's still in prison.

2 convicted of manslaughter.....

* The brother of a coworker got into a fight with another guy over a woman they were both involved with. He was stopped at a car wash one day to vacuum his truck out, when this guy saw him and pulled in. They argued, he got his *** kicked pretty good and when the other guy was walking away, he got his gun out of the console and shot him. IIRC, he got 5 years and served maybe 3.

* A guy back in my old home town shot and killed his ex brother in-law after they got into an argument at their regular Saturday night card game. They were drinking, and his said something about his sister and they got into a fight. The other guys separated them, and his ex BIL left with another guy. As they were pulling out, the other got his gun and just shot blindly at them, but it went straight through the driver side window and killed him. Very sad situation, because these guys had been best friends since grade school, and he not only killed one of his best friends, but he killed the dad of a nephew that was like a son to him. If he hadn't gotten that gun, he would have ran out there and gave him a couple of middle fingers, then a couple of days later, they would have laughed it off. I think he was sentenced to 7 years and served maybe 3 or 4.

now that I think of it. My step brother has committed every other crime you can probably think of. He has probably murdered someone at some point. Oh well he is excommunicated from the family

Back in 1980 a guy I knew and played Church Basketball with murdered a friend of mine's brother. Always knew he was weird but for some reason he gave this kid a ride then drove him to a field and shot him in the head. No motive whatsoever and said he did it because "he was bored". I know he got life in prison but not sure if he ever got out or not.

Back in the early 90's, my largest customer (spent 250 grand a year with me) murdered his wife. Drowned her in a hot tub, then burned the house to try and hide it. He got me for 30 thousand. He'd been taking unemployment out of his employee's checks, but when they applied for unemployment, they found out he had not paid it to the gov. Just recently released from prison.

I know 2. One that worked at the same place I did. His girl friend broke up with him and he shot and killed her. Haven't heard anything about him in a long time, he would be very old so doubt he's still alive.
The other one was in several classes with me when I was a freshman in high school. I went to another school after that. 1 or 2 years after that he raped and murdered a teen girl from his neighborhood.

I think we have a winner.

I have known people who were murdered I can’t think of anyone I’ve ever known who has committed the act tho— I suppose that’s a good thing. But I would like to have known at least one so I could have a cool story to add to some of the stories here. Some crazy shite.

1.

Knew his parents thru my old job, and they were awesome, hard working, nice, successful people. The son was polite but always seemed troubled, and “off.” Clearly has all kinds of problems.

Convicted of manslaughter in 2015, I think. Sounded like a night of partying/drug deal gone bad in the Clifton area.
