How much did losing Dawson hurt WVU?

Losing Dawson? None, it could have even been a gain for us if we hired a new, better OC.

That's not to say I don't think having neither an OC nor a real QB coach is not an issue.

I think having Dawson in the press box helped because he and Dana were always on the same page and it gave a different perspective.

Something just isn't quite right Howard has really regressed compared to his games last season and this season.

Either that or White and Alford just made Howard look much better than he actually is.

I agree, something is not quite right, but having young receivers drop very catchable balls against Baylor hasn't helped. White looked very good against TT.

Has he regressed, or just not improved? He was 21-40 against a poor ISU in his first start, missing many open receivers. He was 20-45 against A&M, again missing badly on many passes. The lack of picks had more to do with his missing by so far no one on either team was near the ball.

In relief against KSU, he provided a bit of a spark compared to an injured Trickett, but several of his big completions were on the same sort of blind chucks up for grabs as he throws this year. White won a couple of jump balls and both Shorts and Alford tracked down "puntish" throws. He probably benefitted a bit in that game from the fact KSU did not prepare for him and barely had any film on him either.

He's never really looked like an adequate QB at this level.

Really, when you look at the entire Mumme/Leach coaching tree, the only relatively successful coach at a high level has been Leach, and he's not exactly a world-beater. In 14 seasons, he's tied (3-way, lost tie-breaker to play in the championship game) one time for 1st place in a division, and tied for 2nd in his division twice.

Granted TTU and WSU are not plum jobs, but compare that to what Briles and Patterson have done at "second-tier" Texas schools and it's not hugely impressive.

That's a long lead up to, even if Holgorsen returns, I don't think bringing in someone who brings nothing but immersion in the same general system and concepts is likely to help much. What would probably help a lot more is someone with a different perspective who could be helpful in making needed changes, and making those changes work.

Howard's Mechanics(at least in his constant overthrows) are terrible. A good QB coach could probably help him greatly. Might have been able to eke out another win along the way.
