Hurt needs to get physically strong. He will be on the bench a lot going forward. To me he plays small especially towards the basket... he's needed big time. Big production, and big down lown.

Hurt is like most college freshmen....his body just hasn’t matured yet. He’s going to have games this year where he looks really good and others where he looks a ways away.

The 'freahman' excuse can be overrated. He knows he's not physically ready. Eat...hit the weight room...take the criticism.

We need Hurt to be ready.

Fine. Take away the word freshmen. Still doesn’t mean he’s physically ready. Not every 18- and 19-year-old kid is created equal. He’s incredibly skilled, but it’s going to take a little more time for him physically. Whether we need him to be ready or not, he just doesn’t look like he is right now.

O’Connell is trending down too. If he’s not making shots he will quickly fall out of the rotation. We have so many guys who do a lot of other things that Alex better get out of this shooting funk.

I feel bad for Alex. If he makes shots he’ll play. Same thing last year. Problem is, he doesn’t make shots.

Alex has had his opportunities. He has to make the best of them. Too many other options Coach K can go with. Who knows he might score 20 next game. His has the ability. OFC

I missed the first 2 minutes of the second half, but have yet to see him step on the court in the second half. AOC either. Hurt will be out the starting lineup come next week imo. I'll say Tre, Stanley, Moore, White, Carey... for this team to be limited of bigs, he needs to play big time. But with K's emphasis on defense, I see white sliding into the starting lineup to replace Hurt.

Best lineup right now to me as well.

I still think some people overreact on a game-to-game basis. I’m not saying you’re doing that, though....

There are going to be nights where both Matthew and AOC are intricate parts of what we do....and on those nights, it might steal minutes away from Moore or even Stanley. For the most part, I think K will mostly play an eight-man rotation. Those eight might not be the same guys, though, like in years past.

Hurt definitely not ready for the league - he will just need to get tougher and stronger. I agree that he need mins over Jav, so does Baker.

I’m curious, why is the first part of your post about the league? I know we have a lot of guys that are only with us for a year. But why are we so anxious to talk about this? I would rather talk about his role with us this year.

Just read Wisemans post on Twitter and it sounds like Hurt was really down in the locker room after the game.

If true, time for some self reflection. Basketball may have come easy in the past, but this is a new animal. There is plenty of time to make a positive experience at Duke. Self pity is not going to be a step in the right direction. Pretty sure they keep the lights on in the gym all night.

Not sure it's self pity or maybe he cares that much, which is a good thing. Hopefully he was just upset with the way he played but happy with the win. Either way we should find out over the next several games. Hopefully he comes out ballin.

Nope he doesn't. I just don't think he is a good shooter at this level. He just miss a bunch of open shots

I won’t say he’s not a good shooter. But he’s smart enough to know the margin is razor thin and the added pressure he puts on himself isn’t helping. He’s not comfortable in his own skin at Duke and never has been. I am not rooting for him to move on, I just think he still needs to find himself and his place.

Guess I’m thinking I want him to return since there has been talk of some of guys being one and dones

It’s always on the table. I would be dumb to suggest it isn’t a major reason why kids choose Duke. They want to be one and done. I just hate talking about it 1/8 of the way into the season. We get these kids for a minimum of 1 year, let’s enjoy that minimum year. At the end of the year we can talk about whether it would be a wise decision for Matthew to move on.

It's one thing to miss a three, but to play small when you are 6'9 is a no no everywhere... this game was a statement for K and Hurt. To me it showed that K isnt afraid to sit anyone. Also, may be the spark to get him going. He hasn't looked good in the past two games... against cal, most of him production came in the last 6 minutes of a runaway... it can work in many ways. Hopefully which ever it brings the best out of him and the team

Not just the shots either it’s the dumb turnovers. Last night he had the big dunk, next possession he tries to feed Javin in the post and he throws a hard chest pass off his knee. He does that constantly.

I made a post about him not being good in the game thread and got hammered. It was cute lol now it’s a topic over here. I don’t get it.

It’s like we expect every kid to have a huge impact every single game. The good thing about this team is that we don’t necessarily need Hurt AND Joey AND Alex AND Jack AND Javin to play their best game every time out. We have enough depth to have the luxury of playing the guys that are hitting shots and making plays. But Alex, Hurt, etc. —-they will all have their moments.

Just gonna take time for him. He looks lost right now, but itll come sometime. Like I said before season started, gotta keep expectations tempered. When a guy commits to Duke, people post threads and hype them up like they are supposed to shoot 60 percent from three and average 20+ a game, then people lose faith after a few games when they dont do anything.

A lot of people just don’t understand the jump these players have to make from high school to college. For most of them, they go from playing against kids to grown men. Big difference between an 18 yr old and 21 yr old. Unless you’re Zion. Carey and Moore seemed to be grown a$$ men too. Hurt will get there. Everyone’s race is different. He’s lucky he has the GOAT to mentor him along.

Good post. We fans need to remember that. It's not only physically a big difference between 18-21 years it's also mental and matunity differences. I know it's been a long time but I remember when I was 18 and how much I changed in 4 years? OFC

I remember how it was from being the man in high school football and then going to college and lining up across from a redshirt senior. It can be humbling to say the least.

Do not think it is a matter of toughness rather the opposite.Mathew is in a situation where he is getting physically overwhelmed but is continuing to try to compete which imo is a sign of toughness.I went into college as a undersized LB who had never lifted a weight in his life and got my butt kicked on a daily basis. One year in the weight room and twenty five pounds later I was a starter so Mathew will have to run his own race but with his skill set he will be a great player for us

Hurt seems to be pretty on par stat-wise with Dunleavy, Singler and Kelly at this point in their careers and I think we’d all be happy for him to end up like any of those guys. His numbers are also bound to go up as the season progresses. Not sure we will see him play a ton this year in games as physical as last night but I’m not sure how many games will be that physical.

I can agree with that. But unfortunately with the mind set now a days, you know he won’t stick around for multiple years like those guys did. It could do him some good for sure.
