Hypothetical coaching change

It’s lost on a lot because he doesn’t talk about these things publicly which is both an admirable trait and kind of a knock against him in this day and age. I don’t think many hate on him for doing the right thing regarding bassett but other coaches that haven’t burned their equity with a gambling scandal probably could have made it work with their admin.
Is the laughing crying emoji for the gambling scandal, the current state of the program or the fact most fans don’t need “insider status” to feel validated? But hey enjoy gatekeeping on a message board while this team is still no closer to a team title.

If he were to talk about what happened publicly.
1- Very few public figures in wrestling would take his word for it as they all hate Iowa
2- It would make things 10x worse

Thanks! It’s nothing personal. Just funny how clueless some people are…. Your suggestion is also an NCAA violation. And yes, the gambling “scandal” was a joke, but that’s how tight things are ran by the U of I.

My guess is they thought they could wear Frost out in the 3rd because of his first time down to weight. Frost's conditioning was impressive in the match and that may have been a surprise to the Hawks staff.

I watched the match last night and I was surprised at what a good match it was. From reading the posts on here, one would think Ayala laid a total egg. That was not the case at all. It was just some good all around wrestling.
Good or bad, Drake is a finished product. His biggest flaw is limited arsenal on his feet. Without some improvement he is sitting 3rd place or worse without some luck. I'm cutting him some slack because its only December.

Cael and Taylor model is to sign the top PFP recruits every year and then optimize their physical and mental strength. Coaching isn't really needed when you're pulling in a mesenbrink, Jax, Bo, etc every year at every weight.

Anyone know if TNT has these positions on staff?
1. A true weight-class mastery coach. Someone that's an elite peak-performance nutritionist/weight management coach that can peak an athletes power at their wrestling weight.
2. An elite mental coach that will keep each wrestler mentally healthy and focused on training and dominating.
Just keeping kids healthy in March had been the biggest knock TNT since they got here that I think can be corrected. We have had unreal amount of injuries that is more than bad luck.

I am guessing he found the burnt equity line ridiculous. The :ROFLMAO: can often be used as shorthand for finding something one considers patently ludicrous.

Nothing wrong with using a reaction as shorthand.

I found it a bit of a stretch, to say the least. But I changed my :ROFLMAO: to a 😲.

I think both can be true- Tarp is right that Brands isnt the most tactful bull in a china shop & Iowa with a new AD looking to make an impact and do things by the book didnt help. The Bo situation happens under Barta and Fred Mims...I feel it would have somehow magically worked out.

The gambling thing still stinks. I have a feeling we will know more once the current Governor and AD it happened under, are not still overseeing it and more information comes to light. And there will be.

Barta was as “by the books” as anybody

Not saying he was dirty. Just he was really a top notch fund raiser so they justified all the lawsuit payouts. Most notably how awful he handled the Field Hockey coach situation. Gary struggled to document anything he ever needed to to cover the department.
Always two steps too late on a situation and lacked in PR awareness. But dude could get the old boys club to open a checkbook.

I stand by my remarksthat Bo would still be here if Bowlsby or Barta were ADs. Beth is just in an odd spot job time wise, gambling, NIL etc where she has to be so clean. But shes smart. She will get this wrestling program on track with or without TnT. She not afraid to put a program first.

Hilarious and warranted. Askrens dumb *** ignored a staph infection for weeks which led to all of this. And people want him leading our program which is also hilarious.
You don't blank about blank. You don't know his medical condition leading up to this. What do you gain by insulting a man who was his lungs replaced. Just being a small person. He can't lead our program now, I agree.

So Askren can poke the bear concerning the iowa wrestling program any time he wants but fans cant poke him back?

The guy was a db before his health issues and apparently hasnt changed.

Even before his medical issues, Askren would be the last person I'd want leading the program.

On the flip side, his criticism of the TnT aren't entirely wrong. Ben may never be able to coach again, which is sad because he was good for the sport of wrestling .

Can’t believe how many fans thought he was serious about coaching us. He was being a condescending troll. He wouldn’t do anything to help Iowa if his life depended on it.

Askren was a phenomenal wrestler and scrambler who obviously has/had a good thing going with AWA, but how could we ever trust him if he were to come to Iowa? He's talked so much trash about the program and seems to have so much disdain, that I'd think that will never go away.

This is on top of the daily fight he goes through with his health issues. I wouldn't waste a phone call on him, but as West Canaan's finest, Mox, would say, "I'm just one man."
How did this pull from varsity blues not get more likes? Well done.

Given Askren's past stance with regard to Iowa you may be right about him trolling. But allow me to offer an alternative interpretation that is completely made up in my head.

Perhaps his recent brush with death has changed him. Perhaps feeling his mortality he thinks it is time for him to pursue something he thought he would have more time to do. And perhaps he truly believes he has something to offer. And what better way to ensure his legacy than by returning an iconic program to the top of the mountain with what time he has left? (Is it that obvious I am getting old and thinking about these kinds of things way too much?)

On the flip side, I am not convinced social media is the way to do it if he reaĺly is serious about it.

Social media is what it is these days so maybe he should have contacted the coaches privately .

However his criticisms seem valid . However I don't know if it would help. I'm sure a whole bunch of coaches were talking about what to do to take the top spot over Iowa during the Gayears, but they never really did.

Iowa's problem is they had arguably the best college wrestling coach ever and that's the standard they want to remain at.

After cable left I believe they had two different cultures when three and four national titles? That's pretty good work over a career but it's not what Gable was accomplishing.

Because currently Iowa's problem is an opponent has arguably the best college wrestling coach ever. Because of the nature of the sport and how it requires solid training partners these dynasties seem to suck out the wind in the room for the rest of the teams.

Look what Iowa did following Gable? I believe they were the most successful team in college wrestling from 1998 through 2009.
Once you get the program at that level it's going to sustain itself and operate at a high level for a long time.

Pretty sure Terry is in charge of mental coaching.
