I knew Mark Pope couldn't recruit after this

He should have thought about that before he put his name in the transfer portal. Kevin Young sold him on staying.
Seems fairly reasonable to do that not knowing who your future coach might be or much about him. Young’s a BYU guy, hell I think he’s a descendant of Brigham Young. I’m sure Saunders felt comfortable with him. But continue on….

I'm a descendant if Jesus Christ. Maybe that validates why a Christian player should stay at my Cathlic school over transferring to a state school.

Kevin Young was an unproven assistant coach. Saunders developed under Pope. He took a big chance staying to play for a coach he may not have clicked with and could have risked regression.

This thread was a parody that if Pope couldn't get one of his own players to transfer and play for him even after picking him up at the airport, then that is as bad as it gets.

To add some proper balance, back when Cal was coach, assistant Rod Strickland was Kyrie Irving's Godfather, but he still chose Duke over Kentucky.

Saunders is exactly was last year's team and this year's team needed.

I wonder if Pope finds it difficult to relate to high schoolers, and prefers experience out of the portal. I could see him giving off vibes of such in visits. I'm sure recruits do express their concern about coaches reaching into the portal.

Pope has a hard time with alpha type guys. That’s his weakness. They don’t respect him because he has accomplished very little and I think pope has very little connections where he needs them most. The south, the north east. They (elite transfers elite recruits) want to play for coaches who win a lot of games, and win in march. Mostly though they want to play for a coach who makes boys men. That’s not popes gig. He’s a talker. He’s confuses his players with all his emotional stuff. Help these guys become young tough physically and mentally men.

I remember very clearly nobody on the board wanted Saunders or Khalifa when it was rumored we were recruiting them.
True! They would have been perceived backups, compared to the talent UK had been getting up to that point, but now with Pope’s historically bad recruiting and roster construction/ management, they would be 2 of the best players on this year’s team!

If he stays another season, and doesn’t resign, the players Pope will likely bring in next cycle, will make Garrison and Aberdeen look like Murray and Jokic!

That’s where this train wreck is headed, if it’s allowed to.

He's not going to get $20 million NIL again so he is toast. Coaches have a shorter leach in this era of NiL, and instant gratification is now the norm.

in 1979 Leonard Hamilton was associate head coach at UK and a GREAT recruiter. But he lost his nephew (James Worthy) to North Carolina. I couldn’t believe it.

Seems like I remember Saunders telling a story about how something a cab driver said made him and his wife rethink against coming to UK .

So essentially, CMP was out recruited by a cab driver on this one.
