Several years ago, I attended a UK/UofL game in Lexington. (The one where Dumervile stripped Woodson at the 2 to win the game).

While trying to leave the stadium I was verbally threatened by several UK fans. In the parking lot a UK fan with a friend tried to start a fight with me. A VERY LARGE UK fan stepped in told the two of them to back down. He was going to have to go through him to get to me. They walked off and I thanked him. Took some more verbal abuse on the way to my car, but nothing that concerned me.

Yesterday, a UK fan (not a very big guy was quietly trying to leave the stadium and a drunk UofL fan was trying to start a fight with him. I paid it back.

I stepped between the two and told the UofL fan to back the fvk down. Told him he wasn't going to make the rest of look bad. He was going to have to go through me to get to the UK fan. I had about 5 inches and 50 pounds on this guy, and he wasn't drunk enough to not see the odds on that one. He sized me up, did some more cussing then walked away. I apologized to the UK fan for what he had done and walked with him out to his car in B lot just to make sure no one else gave him trouble or that guy wasn't following.

So to the big man at UK that protected me years ago, I wish to tell you that I paid it back yesterday.

There's a holes on both sides, but also a lot of good people. I'm proud to say that I got to repay a good person yesterday. We can be rivals but keep it from going too far.

Peace, and good luck in your bowl game.

Good for you man. I love the rivalry but it should be done without trying to inflict violence on one another simply because of fandom. I say that after earlier wishing to punch zipp in the face but that's just because he is an ***, not because he is a UofL fan.

I have lots of friends that are Card fans. I realize it's a rivalry and I LOVE going back and forth with them over our respective teams. I can't stand Petrino or Pitino and they can't stand Cal or Stoops.

However, I can NEVER imagine losing my Dirty Bird friends over a ball game. The banter and bragging rights are what make it FUN.

Fighting over a game is beyond ridiculous.

Thanks Kratz for sharing your story and paying it forward. I would definitely do the same for any respectful Card fan.

No, the big UK fan was the first to pay it forward. I think of it as I paid him back. He did me a solid, and I had a chance to do the same.

I heard someone say there was a fight at the game yesterday. I never saw it or heard about it until I read it on the net. Makes me sad. Like I said, A holes on both sides. I refuse to let them represent me.

Good moves, Kratz. In 2006 when Bush went down, the whole crowd fell into silence. Then ONE UK fan, a toothless SOB that I had seen at prior UK/UL games, started to celebrate loudly, 10 rows in front of me.

Me and another guy right behind me shouted his arse down, quickly. Lo and behold, the guy behind me was Tommy Cook our receiver, who'd graduated the year before.

I started attending games in 1982. My first game, I was surprised how many fans were about my age . . . . 18 to 25 years old. I was a little surprised by how obnoxious many of them were, and drunk and threatening.

I'm in my 50's now, and most of the fans still seem to be about my age . . . . 45 to 55 years old. Seriously, the crowds have aged . . . . this Football habit has become a bit more "upper middle class," and while I enjoy rolling in the mud as much as any 53 year old man, I walk a lot slower, and with a slight limp, toward any trouble spots.

And I'm certain Card fans won't like this; I have had the opportunity to quiet the unruly at Commonwealth a time or two . . . . and one trick shuts 'em up every time: "Hey, buddy, this ain't the Jefferson County Community College, it's the SEC . . . . show some class."

I'm certain Cards fans could use the same (reversed) technique at PPJ's. :)

Fans wanting to exact revenge in the parking lot is a blight on sports in general . People follow teams for various reasons but there is a group in every fan base that the program would be better off without .

We all know what it's like when you're leaving Commonwealth after a loss.
The winning team's fans always cheer, chant and taunt all the way back to the parking lot.
Alcohol, testosterone and disappointment are a volatile combination.
You just have to have thick skin...

Morons on BOTH sides, folks. Add alcohol and it lights the fuse.

It's a free board, and I'm not a mod. I get into it with Zipp all the time. The mods let us have at it.

In all honesty, Zipp is quite knowledgeable on some subjects, such as the YUM center, and he was vehemently against it. If you try to talk pro YUM center to him, he'll destroy you with facts and figures. Most UK fans would like that about him. LOL

However, Zipp thinks he's as knowledgeable on ALL subjects, which he is not. He and I have been really getting into it lately over football recruiting. The more he talks, the more proves what he doesn't know. When you get him on something he resorts to name calling and insults. That's when I dig in deeper and lay the facts down. He winds up calling me a UK fan or troll and I know I've put him in his place.

To reiterate what I said earlier though, he's a jackass online, but I don't think he'd ever resort to violence in person. He's a jackass because he (and others like him) can hide behind the anonymity of a keyboard and not have to worry about the things they say because they hide their identity. I've never felt the need to do that. I don't say anything online that I wouldn't say to a persons face, and I've never hid my identity.

My name is Jeff Kratzwald . Zipp and others like him wouldn't dare reveal who they are. Has 2 adulterers ever admitted that he's Grover? LOL

You're a good man...

Sports affiliations get WAY out of hand at times on both sides!

BTW...I'd say that the video of Kevin ZIPPerly pushing an old lady into a pool, proves that he would resort to violence, against those weaker than him at least.

I quit going to away games after attending UK/UL game a few years back. It was an awful experience and will not go to an away game again. UL fans were a million times more obnoxious, never felt secure in stadium, cussed, thrown coke, people in face. I said never again.

I will say Auburn and Alabama fans came over and thanked us for coming to game. I have been to UT since, they were fine, hell LSU fans were nice, invited us to tailgate. Penn St. fans at Outback bowl were incredible.

I will say Univ. of Fla. was awful experience, they were on level of UL but not close. UL fans and that experience was awful. I have been to commonwealth, not one chance that UK fans acted close to that.

I enjoy a beer like most but when you sell it at stadium than you have problems. UL fans have no class. Gator fans have no class

Agreed. Its sad when you have to tell a fan of your own team to shut the hell up...unfortunately I've had to do that at Commonwealth. I love to kid and rib opposing fans in good natured fun but some dumbasses just don't understand it's just a game. Oh, and good on you OP! [thumb2]

Great story Kratz!

I went to the game, sat about 6 rows back behind UK bench. Several UofL fans yelling at the players. I get it if you are 18-20 years old, same age, a student at UofL but grown men doing it.....it is sad.

Anyway, two UofL fans came up to me as I was walking out and congratulated me on UK winning. No one said anything negative or ugly. My friend who took me is a UofL fan so I didn't too much celebrating either. Guy in front of me was hammered, but he never said anything other than "this is the same as '98 in basketball, you all won the national championship and we beat you all." I said, "well, not really because you all aren't winning the national championship."

Hey, Kratz, seriously, could you get PushupMan to post over here, some. The dude is a real football fan, and very knowledgeable. I've seen posts from him for 20 years, and, back in the day (late 90's) lots of U of L posters were pretty obviously basketball fans doing their best in football discussions/arguments. PushupMan was the clear exception.

Gotta disagree with you on that one. I've been to games all over, and Commonwealth was by far the worst I've been treated. Got treated better at WVU than that day at Commonwealth and we all know how bad WVU can be. Read my original post in this thread. You have your share of them too. Had it not been for a kind, VERY LARGE UK fan, I was in trouble. And I assure you, I wasn't saying or doing anything to anyone. I was just wearing UofL gear and trying to get to my car. It happens everywhere. Don't think you're exempt from it.

About six years ago my group was accosted by drunk UL fans in a very ugly situation going into the game where guys with no shirts painted red drunk out of their mind screamed F %^$ in front of our wives ,bumped us, spit coming out of their loud mouths on us while the police watched and thought it was funny. Had we retaliated by taking a swing at them we would have gone to jail.

A friend of mine is a big UL fan and a trainer. A very big trainer physically. When he heard my story he invited me to go with him last Sat and guaranteed me no one would bother me. We had a ball. This time we sat on the UL side of the field where I suspect older season ticket holders sit. Everyone was very courteous. no problems at all.
I suspect the ugly situation we had years ago was caused by the fact that the game was at 6 pm on a hot memorial day weekend and the Card fans had been drinking for hours before the game.

Point is that both schools have a lot of very nice fans and a few idiots.

I don't believe you. I have been to 100's games in Commonwealth, I have seen some less than admirable things. It is not close to Papa Johns, I can name 25 people who have said the same thing. Not all UK fans, FSU fans, Cincy and Memphis fans who I know said they would rather walk home at midnight from Liberty bowl than go to Papa Johns stadium.

There's good and bad in both camps. Alcohol only makes it worse. That's a good reason to not serve it at college football and basketball games. As I said in another post, I quit going to Papa John Stadium, because I wasn't interested in some of the BS that was going on. 90% or more of the Louisville fans are good sports, and just want their team to win, but you have the 10% who are A$$holes, and when your my, or Mtn cats age, you don't take much BS. I'm sure Mtn cat is like me, I don't want trouble, but I'm to old to run from it.

I'm 5'10" and about 190, so this was not a smart thing for me to do in retrospect...

But about 5 years ago, my son and I were at CWS for the Card game. There was a pretty big U of L fan sitting diagonally in front of us. His girlfriend was a UK fan. Turned out to be a really cool guy. Rooted for his team, but not at all an "in your face" manner, even when things went well for his team.

Several people down to the other side was a drunk UK fan who was simply obnoxious. Whenever something good happened for UK, he would turn to this guy and berate him. Several of us told him to pipe down - there was no need for that. After 3 quarters of off and on abuse, the Card guy finally had enough. He turned to the guy and told him that was enough. Forcefully, but still no cursing. The UK guy started toward him. (while a big guy, wasn't near the size of the Card guy). I immediately jumped down to keep them apart. (part because it was the right thing to do, part because I did not want haymakers thrown with my 10 year old in close proximity) Luckily, I was successful and security was alert as well. They came and asked questions and the UK guy was thrown out. Our section cheered as he was taken away.

This despite us losing the game.

So, great job Kratz. Wish all fans were the same. Don't get me wrong, I wanted to beat the Cards BAD yesterday. Probably an unhealthy amount after 5 years. But at the end of the day, there are good people who root for both teams. Period. And there are idiots who root for both. Period.

Anyone who cheers when a player is injured, should be escorted from the stadium. Injuries occur in every game. Thankfully most of them are minor. Sometimes they are season-ending. On occasion they can be so severe that a young man's future is ruined. Most fans understand that when an injury occurs our common humanity trumps our competitive nature. These players invest too much into their efforts to be treated with cheers when injured. Furthermore, we should never wish an injury on an opponent in order to make the game more winnable. We should want to beat our opponents when they are at their best, not their worst. Saturday's victory is far more sweeter because Jackson was healthy and played. Suppose he had been hurt in the first qtr and a back up had played the rest of the game. A win under such circumstances is not nearly as satisfying. NEVER EVER celebrate an injury of an opponent.
