I remember this board’s reaction to the hire

So many of you spent last year talking down to anyone who said the Pope hire was trash from day one. Anyone who questioned the Pope hire from the start got belittled and dogpiled, told to shut up and fall in line. Now they all are so loud and belligerent after spending all season dragging up old posts to dunk on people who saw the disaster coming. They can all kiss my @SS right now who gave me **** for stating the truth from the word go. Fire CMP. Fire Mitch Barnhart. Clean house.
Amen brother!

This, people act like last year was a thing of beauty. With the money and resources, heck with the UK name, any coach should be able to find a team that can finish middle pack in the SEC in their first year. When Bill Self leaves I bet Kansas won’t hit rock bottom.
Kansas and any other Blue Blood won’t accept this. We aren’t a Blue Blood anymore. Not for the NBA lockout it’s 23 years away from a title.

The melt down this evening was just like our collaspe last year against Oklahoma in the sec tourney. Luckily Oweh bailed us out so that gets forgotten. Think we blew a 10 point lead in the last minute or two.
Well we won that game and it was forgotten. Just like if we won tonight it would have been forgotten. Yes I’m actually glad we lost and I hope we keep losing till Pope is fired. Call that whatever it may be. I’m a bad fan I’ll accept that.

It wasn't because he was the best offensive coordinator in the country with local ties ? 🙄
In a quarter of a century he hasn’t hired one single active HC to coach UK football.

Every SEC vacancy this year got a HC except UK(Ole Miss due to circumstance).

He’s not a good AD.

Will Coach Stein pan out? Who knows. Time will tell. That’s not the point. The point is Mitch makes lazy/easy hires.

We tried because he was one of our own. It failed he must go.

Supporting Pope when he got here because he’s one of our own is one thing. That’s normal. But the numbskulls who think everything is black and white turned any criticism into “hate.” There was no resume to point to, just blind hope because he once wore the jersey—and anyone who simply stated that fact got trashed for it. Ask the obvious question: if he never played for Kentucky, does he even sniff this job? The answer is no. Not even close.

We just hired a football coach because he was a big fan. Mitch must go.
The football coach is arguably the best offensive mind in college football. He has hired an amazingly well recruiting staff and set up a GM and other positions like it should be. Personally I think he is a great hire. Yes please give me Oregon’s level of play.

I am just as angry & frustrated as anyone. It seems like Pope is in over his head. With that said, it's still hard to justify firing the guy in year 2. And as far as recruiting goes, I'm convinced Mitch has hamstrung us with JMI. Mitch is the real problem. Has been for years. I think Pope's hands are tied with recruits because of JMI. I don't see any way Pope is let go after year 2. So, I'm just gonna hope for the best and hope he rights the ship. And Pray Mitch is gone ASAP!

I'm just fascinated by how Pope seemingly forgot how to coach between last season and this one. Overachieved like hell last season and underachieved as bad as the worst Cal teams this season.

I hate to say it, but I don't know that we could justify giving Mark another year at the helm. Love him, but hate this team, the way they lose, and the questionable decisions down the stretch. I had to take my team schedule poster down at work yesterday. Absolutely brutal.

I just... Wow.
I do not get why people say last year was an oveachievement. Last year stunk! Yes, it was great beating Duke (which we were getting owned in the paint until the big guy got injured), Gonzaga , Tennessee (shot lights out), but Georgia was a terrible game, Ohio State was a embrassing blowout,Tennessee tournament game embrassing. He was not good last year. Our defense was terrible all year with good defensive players. We were lucky to have some great shooters last year and a great shooting night against Louisville or we get embrassed. SEC Tournament was terrible. He was a joke before UK, at UK, and will be after UK. He is not a basketball coach. He should go be a Lawyer, Doctor, or Real Estate Agent. He can start by selling his house.

Yeah a win this evening covers up a horrible late game performance again . Sucks as a fan to be in this position. Losing a tough fought game where both teams play well stinks but it can be accepted .This meltdown is nauseating.

I'm not defending Barney at all, I thought Stein or Sumrall were the obvious choices.

No the team and Pope are the meltdown . The writing is on the wall and he needs to go. Im watching Vanderbilt/Arkansas and we are so behind those programs. Im nauseous that our program is being destroyed.

Last years team didn’t overachieve. Stop it with that BS. They lost 12 games and absolutely got destroyed in like 8 of them.

Last years team was full of 5th yr guys that knew how to play. Not a lot of coaching needed. Pipe didn’t forget how to coach, he’s just never been worth a **** at it. Just look at his record.

We didn’t pay him a huge salary and has a reasonable buyout if it doesn’t work in 3 years. So, I’m okay with Stein.

Mitch overpaid Pope and that Sweet 16 extension was a joke.
He's the 12th highest paid coach in America. Like Stoops Mitch has no expectations of Pope finishing in the top 12. He was making a reported 1 million and BYU and we pay him around 5.5 million. Easily we could of paid at most 3 million and he would of crawled here. As usual Mitch pays more on friendship than he pays on results .

I can't take you seriously. That's not meant as an insult, it's just a fact.

The SEC conference last year was the strongest maybe in the entire history of the sport, Pope had weeks to assemble a roster from scratch AFTER most of the top talent had been snatched up, and had half a roster available to him at any given time.

So yes, overachieved. Last year's team had no business getting to a sweet sixteen or doing half as well as they did — all things considered. 👍
You’re not smart enough to understand a roster full of 5th yr guys, huh? He did fine assembling a roster. But that roster was full of guys that knew how to play the game. But they still got destroyed about 8 times and a few times by pretty mundane teams. They were nothing special.

Losing one of the most winnable SEC games at home isn't acceptable. We still got to play UT,UF, and Vandy twice not to mention arkansas and Georgia. You haven't seen nothing yet.

Tonight was inexcusable and embarrassing. My point was once in a while you will lose a close game to a good team and it happens. Losing to a scrub team this evening at home and in that fashion is a firing offense. Its going to be a long season for sure . Gonzaga may not be the worst blowout by the time its all over.

You guys need to chill out a bit. My goodness. And this is coming from a lifelong Tennessee fan/alum where we love to eat our own more than anyone.

Obviously this season hasn’t started well, BUT, there’s a longggg way to go. UK will be fine, & most likely make a run in the tournament. The guy took ya’ll to the sweet 16 in his first year with a roster cobbled together at the last second. Breathe. It will all work out. And, I hate UK basketball.

I wanted Tommy Lloyd. If you have more time than sense, you can read my post history from that time as proof. Lloyd's team is playing pretty good ball these days.
Lloyd wasn’t coming here. Gonzaga. Might be the only other job he would leave Arizona.

Here’s the truth. If Pope is showing you in year 2 that he clearly has the inability to coach at an elite level, why the f—k would you keep him after this year. There are no second chances.

Come here to consume the misery and giggle. Then want to give us a sermon about the way we should feel?

MF’r UK basketball isn’t and never will be be comparable to UT football. So stop comparing UT and UK fans. You’re a mid tier program in sports now. Your exact comments/sentiment, in part, are why you haven’t even won an SEC title in football in over a quarter of a century.

In my lifetime UT has one national title and UK has four. Get pumped, pal.

I said it when cal left and I’ll keep saying it now even though people bashed me but Pearl is the obvious choice. The only one that resembles and old Pitino and that’s what we most long for, that fire and passion and actually coaching players.

Oats turned us down once so why would he come in the next couple years?? Struck out on drew and Hurley then you can’t hire someone from a small program cause we can’t afford to “learn on the job” as evidenced by pope. Mitch hired the guy he knew would not say no but like the Cal hire……he can’t be part of this one even when he retires this summer.
