Interesting comment that there were 5 other candidates who are currently coaching in the NCAA Tournament. We got the right guy.

Oh come on. There was no other candidate. CC would have been CCC if Phillips had gotten his way much earlier.

Did he say they were currently head coaches or tournament head coaches at the time?

I was going to grab at look at that tournament.

during phillips' press conference, a reporter (sounded like teddy greenstein) asked him if bryce drew was one of the coaches that was interviewed for the job at the time. he replied with a "no comment." after a long pause, he then jokingly asked if "no comment" meant yes to the media folks.

in addition to those two, there were some articles speculating that brett reed (lehigh), bob mckillop (davidson), and tommy amaker were also potential candidates at the time.

I'm pretty sure he said that at the time he targeted 5 head coaches that were in the NCAAs, two that weren't, and one assistant (Collins). The "one assistant" line wouldn't make sense if he was talking about their current statuses.

Yeah, I was wrong. Phillips made it clear in his interview after the event that it was coaches in the tournament in 2013. Sorry for the confusion.

Bryce Drew - Valpo, Brett Reed - Lehigh, Dr. John Giannini - LaSalle, Dave Paulson - Bucknell and my guess is Florida Gulf Coast's Andy Enfeld were on the list. Enfeld, Drew and Paulson are in the 2017 tourney. Collins was by far the perfect choice for NU.
