I watch these guys and they are fairly insightful.

How does UK lose every game played this year against good Division 1 opponents? When in our history has any UK team lost in blowout fashion? The 9-16 team biggest loss was by 20 points but most games were 6 points or less.

What is the cause? The interesting part of this video is that the problems identified are not generally basketball skill related but between the ears related!

Problems identified in this video
  1. $$$ leads to lack of Effort, fractured team chemistry
  2. $$$ leads to Playing for name on back of the jersey
  3. Lack of a leader
  4. Oweh $5mil, Quaintance $1.9 mil, Garrision $1-2 mil
  5. Some of the players don’t like each other
  6. Motivation from Pope not there

Basketball skills related
A. Scoring guard now playing point
B. Shooting horrific
C. Rebounding horrific
D. Where is last year’s cutting, screening, and passing office

Problems 1 thru 6 lead to the lack of basketball skills s A thru D

My $.02 - there are player (s) causing friction
Let them go now or things will get worse

What is the solution going to be not only for UK but for every program in the country? Need to spend $$ to get top freshmen or top players from the portal.
Team salary cap? Let the so called superstars get commercial deals to supplement the $$ coming from the university.

Out of control!

He didn’t get 5 million. He got 2 million and change according to Marble mouth. Probably like 2.5.
I read that in an article that looked legit. I don’t know and have asked on this forum if there is a listing showing the entire roster and their take for this season.

Jeff Goodman. He has Pope on a ton so I’m sure he knows more than most about who got paid what. He was close with Krissa last year too.
Yes it’s my understanding we don’t have a player over 2.5 million and most are less than what numbers I see floating around. It’s tough to know the final figures but media speculation is out of control this year. The 22 million number is actually somewhere in the 14-15 range possibly even a tad less.

Exactly. If we actually had 22 million to spend and this is the best roster they could do then they should be fired tonight. That said 14 million is plenty to develop an elite roster. 2-3 million for 3 absolute stars. 1-1.5 for the other two starters. 1 million for your 6th man. 3 million to spread amongst the other 4 bench players. Guys 11-13 get 100-200k.

You can easily get 3 guys the level of Yaxel, Pierre, Ament, Wilson in the 2.5-3 million range especially guaranteed 30 minutes a game. Even Lamar Wilkerson was worth that 2-2.5 number.

Problem at that point is the 2nd and 3rd “absolute star” doesn’t want to share the spotlight so he opts to go elsewhere. The 2 other starters want to be a star and get more money elsewhere and the 4 bench players can get paid the same or more and start elsewhere. That mentality has always been there for some players but this new generation and now that it’s pay to play has taken it to the next level. Thats why I keep saying it isn’t an NIL issue, other teams deal with it to, it’s a character and work ethic issue. You have to find players who will buy into their role. If you can’t do that you are doomed from the start.

Roster building is a lot harder than most of our fans think. Kids don’t want to be the 3rd 4th or 5th option or a bench player. You have to sell them on a vision and how it will benefit them in the long run. Our staff is clearly lacking in the ability to do that and that’s what the most glaring issue is to me. We built a roster where people clearly don’t have a defined role that they’ve bought into fully.

Even with the lack of top tier talent we have a roster better than the majority of schools and shouldn’t be nearly as bad as we are. Look at IU in football, no stars not even second tier stars but they play with a defined purpose and role and they beat the “talent.” It’s not rocket science but you must all be on the same track, which our players clearly aren’t.

Maybe so, but I still believe you can find 2-3 top tier players who want to play with each other. A Fox/Monk/Bam like trio.
