defense was supposed to be more aggressive? Did I miss something? It certainly looked simple, so that prediction came true. Didn't see much aggression though? The only thing I saw improved was the tackling but BYU doesn't really have any game breakers except for Hill. I'll wait to pass judgement on that until after the Miami game.

That is what I thought...all offseason you heard the D talk about how it was more just a "get after it" defense...I did not see any improvement as far as aggressiveness

We stopped the run well, and our tackles played well. I saw more chokeholds on Collins and Freedom than a WWE match. Our DE's didn't have a good day. Also understand - BYU is a well coached team that targeted the second level of our defense all day long (as well they should have). You might watch the first half and second half again. The second half showed quite a bit more attacking from different angles. Knock down the last pass, and it's a win. The conversation here would be entirely different.

I like our dline. I didn't think they played that poorly. It would have been nice to see more pressure but the throws were pretty quick. I think if we would have given less cushion we take away the quick throws. Just as a dline can help out the dbacks with pressure, the debacks can help out the dline by making the qb go through progressions.

The front four couldn't generate any pressure. Banker obviously did not want to use blitz packages.

headcard, that is the point I am getting at. Both aggressive defenses and more complex (similar to Bo) can be good and bad (we saw both from Bo). However, everyone is all gungho to be simple and aggressive...I am thinking a mix wiuld be perfect

The way coach talked about it, they each had some gap responsibilities as well because Hill is a running threat. He spent some time discussing how they needed the pass rush to stay in the lanes to prevent their QB from just taking off. So I don't think they were trying to send everyone in for big pressure sacks. When you have a mobile QB, your DL approach is to contain, and in honesty, it is similar to what the DL did last year.

We will see a more aggressive defense against teams that have QB's that are not a running threat.

yep.. riley talked about it in his press conference on how the pass rush needed to keep lane/gap integrity

i hesitate to say it, cause some people will freak out, but the truth is, the DL game plan was basically the same as had bo coached it

Agree. Not as aggressive as stated. Very predictable...very conservative We once again made a rookie QB look really good and gave him his career highlight (at our expense)...

Bad coaching on timeout management (we used one on a punt where we should've taken a delay of game instead) and at the end by giving them time to organize/talk about the hail mary. Anybody else get deja vu on that NFL style play calling? Somebody want to tell me why TA only ran the ball 3 times? The one play you'd gladly let the QB scramble on all 3 Dlineman get pushed out of the play like ragdoll's while covering their "gaps"... Not much mix of the old and new offensive style there either. Sure looked like another square peg trying to fit a round hole again...

Personally, I don't want to hear any paid offensive coach of ours say in the post game pressor that we "should've probably ran the ball more" (my thought is that we "probably should've hired somebody else" then). We did not do a good job of keeping their defense off balance..and that's 100% on the coach calling the offensive plays. Penalties were just as bad as we've seen as well.

I'll give the new coach's minor leeway but this type of scene has been playing out here for far too long and our FANS deserve better. Weak oline play, crappy play calling on offense & defense, another lost game we should've won...I don't know how the admin expects people to keep paying big money to watch this same crap repeat itself every yr...

There are alot of aggressive defenses that are bad. Just sayin.

Yes, maybe there are but all we heard from spring and fall camps was that the defense was so simple that it would allow the players to play fast and aggressive. I'm saying that I didn't see it.

Which makes sense against a qb like hill
