If Penn State and James Franklin part ways, how would it work? What might it cost?

The answer is he wasn't. And he's not going to be this year either. You seem to be more interested in picking long shot guys that have a small chance of being successful, instead of picking guys whose careers fit the trajectory of coaching at Penn State. If you're in charge of hiring the next CEO of Amazon, you don't look at a list of guys that would be great candidates to be the next CEO of Uber Technologies.

In his 29 year playing and coaching career, Bob Chesney has spent less than 2 seasons at the FCS level. That's not someone you hire and expect to win a national championship. The guy would be so lost at a place like PSU, it would take him years to catch up to the resources and demands he suddenly finds himself it. When your job (and career arc) is on the line, like Pat Kraft's will be if he is the one making the next football coach hire, you don't throw **** against the wall and see if it sticks.

If you want a real list, it would look something like this: Lane Kiffin, Curt Cignetti, Eli Drinkwitz, Fran Brown, Clark Lea, Guys who have had success recruiting, developing and winning at a level at or just below what PSU is looking for.

I'm going to go play some golf. Do me a favor and bump this thread every time one of those 3 coaches gets an interview and let's see where they end up
Again, I'm not gauging on interest from other schools. That has major Shiny New Car vibes.

I want the best person to coach Penn State.

How about some humor to lighten to mood...
James Franklin will not leave until he has coached in EVERY Big Ten Stadium. So far of the 18 schools he has coached in 16 different stadiums. In 2026, Penn State plays in Seattle against Washington so that will be number 17. Presumably in 2027, we will be playing in Eugene then, he will have coached in every conference stadium and can leave if substantiated progress is not attained.

So you’re anti-Franklin and pro-child molestation. Got it. Odd how those things tend to go together.

Unfortunately for you, but fortunately for society, no matter how many Franklins you try to purge, we aren't resurrecting dead coaches, nor are we championing pedos.
You are one sick and illiterate dude if that is the conclusion you are drawing. Find help - fast.

Well a top commit just said good good bye to PSU and de committed. I would expect more and if this continues it's going to be very concerning going forward for Kraft

As long as the cash money keeps coming in from TV deals, all is well.

I won't lie... I am frustrated just like everyone else. There were very high expectations this season and unfortunately it is likely not going to turn out the way everyone had hoped. That said, In all honesty I cannot find anyone available that I believe can come in and do a better job recruiting and coaching than the current staff. My proposition is this.. Give CJF another season in 2026 because, we are going to have to anyway and one more offensive coordinator. If it does not work out next season my understanding is after January 1, 2027 his contract is structured to where the buyout is significantly lowered. Again, the choices out there of head coaches Matt Rhule and Matt Campbell really don't move the needle. Everything is figureoutable and I truly believe James gets it right in 2026.
You know that UCLA's coaching staff had been in place for a matter of days before beating us, right?

Drinkwitz would never come here! Brown is only 3-3 this year including a blowout loss to Duke! Lea is 21-33 lifetime! Cignetti is way too old! Lol!

Am I doing this right?
Hey! Duke is a legitimate football team these days.

Unless our wealthy donors finance a departure, it is not possible for PSU to part ways with Franklin over the next couple years. I would imagine Franklin is here through the 2027 season at the very least. I fear we may be in purgatory.

I fear you are 100% spot on!! The BOT \ Krafty do not have cajones to fire him.

Like many of us, the athletic and administrative staff never foresaw any of this happening as recent as two weeks ago.

To say they have a plan is wishful thinking but now the financing of all the capital projects is at risk… unless they do something and that requires a buyout but how can they when they are closing campuses, PBS, etc… oh they just gave Neeli more money.

Kraft and Bendipudi are in a very bad place. It’s a mess to say the least but are you telling me this just happened in the last two weeks? And now VC’s are getting involved!

The only plan moving forward is to bump Franklin to football GM and bring in a new HC. Set it up like an NFL front office. He built it so let him manage it but get him out of the locker room and off the field.

Now’s the time for seismic change! Make the earth shake, Krafty.

All this talk of wealthy donors being willing to pay the buyout… if they were actually willing/able to fork up that much more money, then I’d say please stop and redirect that to our lagging NIL funds. That will solve more problems long-term.

I just don’t think there’s any way as GM he could keep from meddling with a new coach. It’s just his nature. He’s way too involved with the offensive playcalling. He doesn’t trust his own handpicked QB to make plays. He doesn’t trust his own assistants.

If he’s out as head coach then it just needs to be a clean break and he has to move on. Maybe he’d be good in a GM-type role, just not here.

Did anybody set up a GoFundMe yet? 10 bucks a person with 1 million fans donating can at least offset some of the costs.

Only solution is for Franklin to be 800 miles from State College.

I think we’re going to get to find out yet this season if “no coach at all” is an upgrade over James Franklin.

I can’t even tell you how many free tickets I was offered yesterday. Walking around the tailgates listening to the amount of Franklin bashing BEFORE the game was eye opening. So many fans have checked out and just show up out of routine or because they can’t give away their tickets.

It’s not a good situation and the rest of the year will be ugly. I know there’s still a huge amount of money owed to Franklin but I’m wondering if his ego can take the abuse that’s coming his way every week if he sticks around.

Ask all of the PSU NFL players to ante up the buyout. Some of the better ones need to have a “come to Jesus” session with James and dip into their pockets to get him to step aside. He’s done good by them. Now they can return the favor.

Let me get this right. Many of you want to spend $50 million plus to unload Franklin and millions more to fire his staff. Then you want to turn around and spend tens of millions more on a new coach and staff.

Have people lost their minds?

You want the University to spend the GDP of a small country on your hobby because you are not getting the results you want? This is minor league football we are talking about. You already have the University engaged in a $700 million spending spree so you can have wider seats and better concessions.

Of course this is insanity. A University is engaged in a business venture, minor league sports, that has nothing to do with educating students. It is long past time that we begin to put things in focus and reorder our priorities. I do not understand those of you who think any of this makes sense.

If you think spending 50 mil to oust a coach (which will be negotiated down and even less once he signs somewhere) is expensive, wait until you see how expensive 25k empty seats in a brand new stadium will be.
The stadium is sunken cost. 12-0 or 0-12, it’s spent. All that’s left is to decide whether you actually want to have the ability to pay it off.

With the payout from BIG membership and selling tickets for a mediocre minor league football team they can service the debt on the stadium.

It is a question of priorities. If people want to spend tens of millions a year on their hobby I would ask them to understand that many of us think it is crazy.

WSJ had an article on how Oklahoma had gone in on an NFL structure. GM, Scouts, player development. etc. Allowing the coach to focusing on "coaching".. Worked well till this TX weekend. In this structure college HC salaries will fall more in line with NFL salaries.

That’s fine, but also understand that football (and sometimes basketball) are net money makers for the school and the university.
If we took Beaver Stadium to 3500 seats and put them in the Presidents Athletic Conference, about hundreds of other athletes in other sports would no longer exist. The school would be poorer for it overall as well.
It’s crazy, but what’s the net negative in any of it? The millions or hundreds of millions will be returned several times over.

He's 55, not ancient
He won 7 games at Penn State with 40 scholarships
Nick Saban thought enough of him to run his offense

What disqualifies him exactly?

Other than him getting out of town after only two seasons and some beef about PSU / Paterno, I liked him as a coach. He got a walk on QB to an NFL roster.
