For the newbies, every Monday I bracket the 256 playoff teams using the IHSA playoff outlook. This is NOT a prediction. These are NOT my opinions. It is simply the most logical way the playoffs would be bracketed, using the IHSA's specific system, if today's standing were the final standings.

Each week I usually have to add/subtract teams to get a true 256. The outlook doesn't adjust for the teams ineligible for the playoffs from the CPS "Chicago" conferences (teams who finish 3rd place and lower). The outlook doesn't adjust for a conference champion falling below the cutoff. I take care of all that before proceeding.

Is this a huge waste of time? Yes. But some people seem to like it, and I like bracketing things, so I'll waste some time on the next 6 Mondays for the enjoyment of Edgy's minions. Where you can find some value is in the cutoff for each class, the north/south line between brackets in 1A thru 6A, and how some teams relate to others in terms of playoff points. For example, Glenbard West was a 7A team for a decade. But their ascension to 8A in 2014 should not have been a big surprise because I was showing you they would likely end up in 8A for over a month.

Anyways.....

I don't want to get too detailed for the first playoff outlook. I pulled Steinmetz, Mather, Lincoln Park, and Foreman out of the playoffs because of the CPS "Chicago" conference rule. I inserted Marshall, MoPo, and Prospect into the playoffs because their conference had zero qualifiers per the outlook. I simply chose the top team listed by record and playoff points. That left us with 255 teams, and several others tied at 2-1, 10 pp. Rich Central won my week 3 tie-breaker of eeny-meeny-meiny-moe. I'll use the official IHSA tie-breakers in two weeks when the standings are a bit more forgiving. From there, I adjust teams up and down into the proper classes to create 8 classes of 32 teams.

Still, despite this lengthy explanation for the 10th year in a row, one particular local buffoon will be asking how the hell H-F is ranked so low, below Glenbard East. UGH!!!

Here is your first look at our dream come true, 8A and 7A seeded 1 to 32!

so MC is not affected by SF because they won 2 different classes in 12-13? obviously SHG Montini bumped up from 5 to 6A

Oh, how I love to needle our local fanboy. I admit, bracketing teams with six games remaining in a nine game season is ridiculous. I also admit, begrudgingly, that fanboy's team will be the hands-down heavy favorites to win 8A. I saw them in person, and Dallas Carter is a fitting nickname.... They were a mile bigger faster and stronger than a traditionally powerful 8A program.

BUT....

The top seed is a matter of fact, not opinion… The IHSA doesn't rank the teams, they seed them. If Loyola goes undefeated, they will be seeded higher than H-F. Same goes for an undefeated team coming from the W Sub Silver in 8A (if OPRF or HC get GW and run the table). Undefeated Barrington and New Trier also likely finish ahead of H-F. It's all about playoff points. Loyola already has a five point lead on H-F. Last season LA finished 12 points ahead of H-F. As the conference season starts, the race for playoff points generally flattens out. I don't see H-F making up that difference.

From What I hear yes. SF doesn't count if you won in 2 different classes. Makes absolutely no sense which is why it makes all the sense for the IHSA.
by that logic if SHG wins in 6A this year they would stay in 6A for at least one more year because they won in a different class, even though it's their third straight championship.

I also think you should have to WIN your class to advance and not just get to title game. What if you were getting to title game and losing 41-8

Hijack it, please! As the author of this post, I encourage it. I'd love to learn about the nuts and bolts of the SF. It's a subject I've largely ignored the last two years.

Or we can stay on topic and debate whether or not Solorio Academy can run the table in their pretend bracket as the top seed in 5A!

MC is not subject to the SF because their two titles were in different classes. They do meet the criteria to be moved up (2 trophies in 4 years, at least one of them in the previous 2 years) except for the different classes issue.
