Theee were many options last year, and Taylor wss rated one of the very best of them...

One of. And there were others rated similar or better. And CcC’s eye for talent led him to pursue and land Taylor.

Did Taylor have other suitors? Undoubtedly. Before you give me a list, any verified? For starter or role player? How did that program do?

Coaches can swing and miss. But CCC has had a few too many misses lately. Needs to hit some hits, maybe a homerun some day.

If NU can land Charlie Moore from Kansas, it would be like finally getting some deferred compensation for the Rex Walters transfer to KU back in the day.

Only if Northwestern makes the Final Four and the TV announcers constantly refer to Moore as "the Kansas transfer." 1993 was my first introduction to NU hoops thanks to Walters always being referenced as "the Northwestern transfer" during the Final Four.

We’re going to need Haywood to help us separate fact from fiction during this transfer season. Probably on anything we hear about assistant coach rumors, as well.

Based on his offer list out of high school, that would narrow down the options to:

NU
University of Illinois-Chicago
Loyola Chicago
DePaul
Illinois (I guess...2ish hours away from his high school)

Illinois ain’t recruiting him

Edit: Illinois isn’t recruiting him this time around. They’re full at guards, already have several undersized ball handlers on the roster. They’re only really looking for a SF/stretch 4 type.

I am almost certain that Taylor would have looked a lot better on a better team. He was a shooter, yet he rarely got good, clean looks because teams could defend the 3-point line against us so easily. His man probably never had to leave him to help out with a driving ballhandler or to double an imposing big man.
The offensive flow of the teams playing Saturday night and the Northwestern team that finished playing a few weeks ago look...different.

He was top-10 on this list:

https://bustingbrackets.com/2018/06/07/ncaa-basketball-ranking-top-30-graduate-transfers/6/

And this ESPN piece terms Taylor "one of the top grad transfers on the market". His final four was us, Miami, Oregon and Indiana according to the article:

http://www.espn.com/mens-college-ba...rad-transfer-ryan-taylor-commits-northwestern

And accoriding to this Tweet, a boatload of schools contacted him:

And this Tribune article mentions 40 schools with interest:

If that's the case, then it would be very disappointing for NU to lose him to any of the other schools.

he had lots of open looks ... wasn't shy about shooting .... and for whatever reason didn't knock them down this year at his usual rate

maybe it was the fact that the competition was longer and faster

maybe he needed a year to adjust and could have killed it in a second year

beautiful shot...one of the nicest shots I've seen

I don't think a better team in a similar conference would have helped....maybe a better team in a weaker conference

Sorry but without a PG, those shots were not as open as you think, Also I believe he took a lot more shots at Evansville and likely was more able to get into a rhythm, Having a true PG likely would have improved the whole team and him especially. For NU he needed to be the man while for a better more complete team, there would have been no where near as much pressure on him

if this coaching staff can pull off moore, brunk, and freeman it should be illegal to talking about this staff recruiting kids!!!
I don't think it should ever be illegal to have an opinion in either direction about how the coaching staff is doing. Diversity of opinion is fine.

Also, it would be great if we pull out 3-4 high quality transfers and have a strong roster for next year - but long-term I don't think that's the best way to build a program that has sustainable success. Granted it's happening increasingly in CBB these days, but that process creates more moving parts, and you are dependent on things you can't control (namely the supply of transfer candidates in a given year, and whether they can get eligibility).

I mean, you're either open or you're not regardless of who else is on the floor. If you feel open, you take the shot.

He took a lot of shots...almost six three pointers a game.

you better be committed to transfers if you're in big time college basketball

it's a meaningful chunk of the roster

if you're not making it a central part to your recruiting the competition has passed you

The problem is the the competition already passed us.
- Last in the B1G
- Best 2 players graduating + 4 other scholarship players departing
- Returning players accounted for less than 95 min/game in 2018-19--and those returning players aren't anywhere near as good (yet?) as freshmen/sophomores/juniors making a big impact for our B1G competition

It's not an issue that the transfer market is a central part of our recruiting for 2019-20; it's that that we are entirely depending on it now. And, in order to field a somewhat competitive team, we have to fare better in the transfer market than all of our competition.

It's a tall task to turn things around for 2019-20.

I’m just saying that when it comes to Chicago players especially, Illinois is top-of-mind and still seen as a class above NU (even before this year). Pains me to say that, but it’s true.
Too bad we lost the momentum from the NCAA season. The timing of the renovation was unfortunate, and the decline in performance even more damaging. These things tend to go in cycles so hopefully Collins can turn it around, but he does have a monumental task ahead of him, starting from the ground floor (last in the B1G).

I think this is true, but I don’t think Illinois is exactly top of mind for Chicago kids either. Generally ahead of NU in the pecking order, but nowhere near the top for high major peeps out of Chicago. Ayo was the exception, not the rule.

Ayo and THT. If you recall, THT was bound for the dumpster-smell ridden school down state until the AAU nonsense arose forcing THT to Iowa St.

I am an Illinois fan, I do recall quite well. Still haunts me to think what we could’ve done this season with both of them. I’m not sure that puts us in the tourney field, but at least on the bubble. Oh well, both had success at their schools of choice. I’m excited to see what THT can do in the NBA next season.

My lasting Taylor memory unfortunately will be the wide open look at the end of regulation vs. Oklahoma that he missed. Kind of symbolized his season. He made very few big shots.

Hard to say, depends on how he develops. If he gets a first round guarantee, he should and will go pro now. But given how much he needs to work on, I think the best he gets is second round interest this draft. My guess is he comes back, but I wouldn’t bet money on it.

As for his pro game, I’m not sure he ever makes a huge impact at that level. He’s a good college basketball player, but even if he improves his jumper, I’m not sure he’s ever got the raw athleticism he needs to be effective in the NBA. He might improve a lot, because he’s really young still. But I just don’t see him being able to play defense effectively or create a shot for himself.

I think Ayo has a game that likely makes him a better college basketball player than THT, but I think THT will have a better pro career. He’s just got that huge wingspan and the bulky frame. If he can consistently shoot, he could be a poor man’s Draymond. But I think if he or Ayo are drafted, it’s with the knowledge that it’s a multi year investment because both need to develop before they can make a big impact in the NBA

Nothing there confirms an actual offer. There is no true way to know. Whenever these talking heads report something you disagree with, they are wrong. Went it aligns with your belief, it’s god spell.

I stick with this, CCC has had too many misses lately. It is as important as signing guys that he has identified the right guys.

I said before, I think he was starter B1G quality. Playing against starters in this much better division reduced him to afterthought.

He may have performed better off the bench facing other bench players.

Gonna disagree with you Bob.

What I saw was a player who was very talented, very skilled and never got comfortable. I think if he came back next year he'd kill it.

OK Bob, you win.Cleary all these facts that I was able to find in less than five minutes indicated that Taylor was a low-quality transfer that was not coveted by a lot of teams. IF I spent more than 5 minutes on this, no doubt I could present you woth boatloads more evidence, but clearly you have already made up your mind with the benefit of hindsight, so it would be a waste of my time. I'll allow Haywood or someone else to own you on the Taylor was a low qualoty transfer assertion.

What I know:

- Taylor came here
- Taylor started most games last season
- Taylor performed quite poorly here

I can’t speak to high quality or low quality. I cannot speak to who offered what. I believe that he was role player quality. Maybe other programs offered but as a role player. Maybe he came here because the only place virtually guaranteeing a starting role. Neither of us know the actual facts. But it is very reasonable to believe that CCC promised a starting spot, nobody else of substance did.

Whatever happened, CCC has to start succeeding on some recruits. Even if MSU offered Taylor and offered a starting spot suggesting Izzo made the same mistake, Izzo has enough successes that a miss or two doesn’t matter. CCC does not enjoy that luxury.

So are you saying that your mind is already made up in retrospect that Taylor was a bad choice by CC AT THE TIME with the benefit of hindsight, or are you open to the fact that it may have been an excellent choice by CC at the time that was imploded by Lathon's departure less than 2 months after Taylor came aboard, leaving a backup PG and shortly thereafter, no PG, to get the ball to him as an SG? Because what I presented to you in 5 minutes in research was a mountain of evidence from people who know a lot more about basketball recruitment than you and I that Taylor was a highly sought-after grad transfer. I mean, duh, we all know in retrospect he didn't work out (if we are evaluating coaches in retrospect, Brad Underwood was an absolute recruiting genius this year for nabbing Georgi B. from the clutches of Hofstra, but he even admits that retrospective analysis is silly, and that they were very lucky with that one). However I believe, with evidence to back up my belief, that he was a major pickup AT THE TIME for our team. I suspect you don't, so agree to disagree I guess...

You were never getting both of them, at least if Ayo’s camp had their way.
