Pretty dumb coaching job. Loyola was beating them up inside and not once did I see them using a zone against Loyola to try to make them beat them from outside

To think a zone is the solution to your problems is having the understanding of basketball my dead grandmother does.

Shhhh. He thinks he knows more about coaching than, like a real coach who actually does it for a living.

I’m not a basketball coach, but how do you let a center dribble endlessly at the top of the key with his back to more than half of the court and never have someone double-team and/or outright steal the ball? They just allowed the LUC offense to toy with their “defense”.

This made me laugh today. "After a strongly worded letter, Illinois requests to be Co-National Champions".

“A day that will live in infamy.”

The Illannoy AD is a moron. I’m glad they lost simply because of his abhorrent Pearl Harbor reference.

Pretty clear that what they were doing was not working. Loyola was getting inside at will and destroying them inside. Don't have to use the zone full time but it would have been a different look and limited that inside scoring. A zone would have limited that. It would also have forced some discipline on them as they were generally playing out of control. It would have also limited the foul trouble they were getting into. Now Loyola could have beaten them by hitting from outside but as it was they didn't have to.

This is not to say that they were running their O well.

Basically they looked like they were out of control playing schoolyard ball trying to win through sheer athleticism against a very disciplined team and they needed something to change that

GEORGIA TECH played zone 90% of the time....against LU in the first game...It was one of the funkiest interesting zones I have ever seen....Carmody would have been taking notes,,,,but the other thing about playing zone if you have not played it all year is that you will probably not play it well...

UCLA has also played a similar brand of zone.

You nailed it. In your last sentence IMO

Well, they weren't playing MTM very well and they had played that all year. It should be part of their repertoire and just the change would have caused some disruption. They also had problems on O so it was not just a single issue but their D was terrible

This is actually one of the very best things about the NCAA tourney. So many of those large-conference teams with four-star recruits think they can just show up and beat little pipsqueaks in the lesser conferences while fighting lefthanded, and sometimes they can, but every year there are well-coached pipsqueaks that can overcome their deficit in athleticism, and it's beautiful. Unless you're a fan of one of the big teams.

They needed to go small once in a while and get better spacing. Kofi is a beast, but he also clogs the lane and draws traffic. No way a player like Ayo should get only 10 shots and a few points in that game.

My source is the boxscore that tells you who is on the court and how many points are scored. When Greer is on the court, other teams score a lot more points against us than when he is on the bench.
Chryst? He doesn’t come across as very personable to me.

well dont disagree that they did not play man very well.and made few or no adjustments..overall I thought Underwood coached like he never thought LU had a chance to win.....stuck with his original game plan with little or no adjustments....He allowed his quicker guards to be double teamed consistently on the pick and roll....The LU guards other than Kennedy were probably not as quick as their guards....so he really made no adjustments offensively or defensively and also agree that a program is better off if they have multiple defenses to go to....

I have actually been vocal about the Fighting Undies be the best team in the B1G all year. Had them in the final eight. However, your Red *** Coach looked like he just rolled out of bed for the game and best player was a no show at the wrong time.

It stinks to be expected to roll to the final four and get waxed early. Especially tough for arrogant Illini fans that think they are the only team in the State. You know something about being a cellar dweller on the gridiron. What feels worse Barn, choking or not being relevant? You know both Barn, so don’t come here looking for sympathy. Maybe Bert can get you to 10th in the B1G. Might ease the pain. Go Blers.

Oh Barney, you need to get over this whole tournament failure by your team. Now, is the IL loss one of the biggest chokes in the history of the big dance, perhaps. Was it a once in a life time opportunity to win a championship with NBA tallent, perhaps as well. Was it a catastrophic coaching failure that has people still scratching their heads, maybe. But what is done is done, look forward to football.

There have been some catastrophic coaching failures in this tournament -- Texas losing to Abilene Christian comes to mind. The Loyola win was not one of them, as much as I'm sure we all laughed at Illinois' misfortune (and I certainly did).

So Loyola should've beaten Illinois by 13? Not Underwood's finest hour.

Loyola came in No. 9 in KenPom and played an excellent game, making the timely shots they didn't make the next round. Oregon State also pressured Krutwig a lot more. I think being a 1-seed playing an in-state school they would never schedule maybe led to some arrogance and not trying more press early in the game or otherwise disrupting Krut's rhythm. Illinois would win a seven-game series against Loyola, but that's why the tournament is such an amazing watch.

Good thing it isn’t a seven game series.
