Brad Underwood:

On the game: A game in which Northwestern had six offensive rebounds, they had two of them in the last three minutes. Give Turner a lot of credit, he stepped up and made the shot. Our execution for the most part was pretty good, Ayo [Dosunmu] had another superb game, made some nice finishes. I've done this 31 years and you see it all. You lose some of these games but they come back to you. We have some hurting guys in our locker room, but you're excited cause it hurts. That's when you're playing the right way.

On the emotional nature of the game: [Our guys] are tired of it. A two-possession game in Indiana, these kids are bought in, they're becoming closer through all of this, and that's exciting, it makes it really fun. Two of our top three scorers are freshmen, our leading scorer is a sophomore. We're getting there.

On the three-point shooting: Lot of ways to win a game, to challenge to win a game. I'll take 42 points in the paint. Give some credit to Northwestern's defense. We had some decent looks and on occasion this happens.

On Northwestern's defense: We were trying to put Vic Law in every action because they switch everything, he had four fouls, it was a bit of a chess match.

On the atmosphere: Building is fantastic, kudos to [Northwestern's] administration, it was fun to see so much orange in the stands. I'm sure Northwestern would like a better home attendance, but our fans took care of that.

Gee what happened to "the plan". Less seats = purple crowd! Congratulations to the kids and the coaches on a much needed win!

Underwood’s a loser.

Chris Collins:

I appreciate you guys being here, I expected a very small contingent, thought everyone would be at Soldier Field. It was a really hard-fought game today, two teams searching for their first conference win. We were heavily tested today, a young team that has talent like they do, they felt they could win. Thought Anthony Gaines' energy in the second half was huge and I'm really proud of A.J. Turner. He got the ball back for that second shot and he went up and took it, no hesitation. I was really proud of him to take that. This was a game we knew we had to win.

On perimeter defense: I believe we're one of the better three point defensive teams around.

On Ryan Greer: I just loved his fight. It's not easy being a freshman guard in the Big ten. He was feisty, he was tough, I thought his energy was huge. I've challenged our bench guys and part of it is me believing in them in those situations. I was really proud of Ryan, Anthony, and Barrett coming off the bench.

On the stakes of this game: We had to win. I'm not one to sugarcoat, we had to win. You can't say it all the time, you have to be honest with your guys, but we knew we had to win today to get on the right track.

Concluded with an emphatic "Bear down!"

A.J. Turner

On his game-winning shot: I thought I got a clean look on the first one, huge to get that second chance and I was open. Coaches and teammates have been telling me to be aggressive so I let it fly.

On the difficulty of Illinois' defense: It wears on you as the game goes on, they're a great team, but you just have to be laser-focused. You have to have the right pass, be aware of your timeouts, everything like that.

On a turning point in the game: When Anthony came in and made those threes. It changed the game for us.

Anthony Gaines

On the must-win nature of the game: What coach said was right, where we are in league play, we let one go at home, two on the road. I think everyone was ready to play and we executed the game plan.

On the impact this win has on the season: It gives us confidence. It was good to get that win, get our confidence up.

They move the ball really well, and they saw they had success. We just made good adjustments and got more locked in defensively.

I think we just have a ton of players, it all doesn't rely on Vic, in times like that we'll step up. They gameplanned to take him away, it led to open shots [for others].

It wasn’t that bad. I’d say 70-30 NU. Our fans were quiet though which is frustrating.

The NU crowd was pretty subdued, thanks to the early start, the pre-Bears distraction, and students still on break. But that was also the smallest and quietest Illinois crowd I’ve ever witnessed in Evanston. Underwood is a tool.

Sounds a bit better but wondering about a bunch of close to the floor empty seats seen repeatedly on TV. Sure looked liked they forgot to show up or were they in the club?

I'd just show up like this:

"Hey but it's a conference win"

second quarter starts tomorrow....don't get why there weren't more students there

Announcers commented a lot of students are returning from break today and the relatively early start of the game didn't help attendance.

When your team (Underwood) is in 14th place in the Big 10 with a 4-11 overall record, 0-4 in the Big 10 and your seat is getting hotter by the minute, being a little snarky after your team fails to execute two of your last second plays after a timeout is not surprising.

Some kind of nepotism that you have your kid playing six minutes in a tight Big 10 game on the road. Thank Underwood for not playing his most talented players. Great example of nepotism ... or coaching.

You couldn’t scrounge up a ticket?

I would say 70-75% NU. The problem was that crowd was very quiet and seemed to be waiting for the Bears game to start.

That guy sucks. By the way, as someone who grew up in Chicagoland, I never thought I’d see an Illinois coach wear an orange jacket (in theory for big games) on the road in Welsh-Ryan. How the mighty (in their own minds, anyway) have fallen ...

Illini fans were very quiet. I saw their AD in the lobby, and he looked pretty stressed.

What seats did you have?
Willy doesn’t seem to realize it was the lowest percentage of Illini fans I’ve seen in my 20 years of attending games, so the plan worked. Our fans just sat with their hands under them like they were in a library.

If you have to decide whether or not to fire a 4-11 coach that you brought in or tough it out until they go 7-25 and reevaluate at the end of the season, you'd be stressed as well...

That particular jacket did bring back some fond memories of Orange Julius for me, tho.
