Treading on the edge of Political Thread here, but what the heck.

A handful of powerful and usually wealthy people have always controlled the reigns in any society, often from behind closed doors. This always will be. They accomplish this by rewarding the people who carry out their wishes (see Politicians). SCOTUS are major lawmakers these days (only 5 votes are needed), often out of whole cloth (ie, the Constitution does not directly address the issue).
