This looks like the typical Lockley UMD team - a few early wins that make you think they might be okay, and then the loses start piling up.
They always have good athletes, but as a team, they just aren’t very good at football.
Why? Are they a new crew covering MD football?
They'll all look like NC contenders by the time we play them.
WRT a “Playoff year”, even before James left, people were talking about how easy our schedule would be “next year” ( this year). Let’s face it, at this point we should be favored in every game with the possible exception of Michigan, and they have looked like utter crap.
Heck, I saw that we are even favored over Washington by two touchdowns, and I thought that was going to be our second toughest game. USC looks like a variance of 1.5 either way depending on who you look at. But USC looks like the most overrated team in college football right now.
You could make the argument that VTech’s schedule is as hard or harder than ours is this year. Miami AT Miami looks tougher than our game at Michigan. And they have to play SMU, Clemson, and Cal on the road. Compare that to Northwestern, Washington, and Maryland however you want.
You might think I’m crazy, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see BOTH teams in the Playoffs this year if everyone remains healthy on both sides. It might not be too far fetched to see a first round game at either Beaver Stadium or Lane Stadium between James Franklin and Matt Campbell. Think how surreal that would be for guys like Grunk and Reynolds if it was actually at the Beav. Who wouldn’t crawl over broken glass to be at that game?
Both teams are doing well. That's quite painful for some to live with. Yes Psu's schedule seems to look easier every week. I think all opponents will be 3or 3+ loss teams. As we sit here today PSU should be favored over Michigan. I mean they lost to a directional school at home. Less "stocked" if Rapp can't play. Brahmer is a good receiver but not a very good blocker.
Campbell kept the right TE. That is not a knock on Reynolds. But CMC had two good pass catching TE coming from ISU. He needed a blocking TE. Rapp is one of the best in the business.

The 2026 schedule was a tailor-made schedule for Franklin - who, for better or worse: had teams that generally crushed bad teams, had little trouble w mediocre teams, and was pretty reliable against lower end of the top 25 teams.
His achilles heel - obviously - was the absolutely dreadful top 10 record - which was/is a complete non-factor this year (in fact, it wouldn't be too hard to see a scenario where PSU doesn't beat a single Top 25 team - AND makes the playoffs).
The complete swap out of the 2025 team/staff, for a completely (almost) new 2026 team/staff/program - obviously - threw everything back under the hat.
FWIW: Washington is not even a good team. They have a nice QB - which is all most people even look at, or know about - if they even know that. But they were not very good last year, and lost a lot.
By far, the greatest challenge in playing Washington is having to travel cross-country to Seattle (which is not an insignicant thing). But if PSU has any trouble w Washington's "talent", they (PSU) have big issues.

Rapp is just an all around excellent TE. He blocks really well and he is pretty damn affective with the ball. I agree that CMC kept the right TE. I believe he is our best TE.
Perhaps not the vote of the average fan. but a coach would agree. If Rapp does not play on Saturday, it's a bigger loss than Howard. Rapp's blocking is critical at the point of attack for a huge percentage of the running game.

That is why I am not the average fan. I look for those details from a players perspective. I agree that Rapp not playing is a little bit larger of a loss than KH because of his skill sets in the trenches. I am not taking anything away from KH, losing him for a bit will hurt because of his ability to create explosive plays. Lets just hope Rapp is good to go for Saturday. If he is not, I still believe we have the edge.
PSU has one of the most experienced teams in college football. in terms of collective "starts" and snaps.
I would typically agree but the TE depth is, IMO, elite which minimizes the impact to a degree. I'm not convinced our WR depth is even good let alone great but unfortunately we'll find out.
JMO the drop off between Rapp and others isn't nearly as big as it is at WR. Hopefully Rapp plays and it moot. He's a big loss as well but thus far only one player on the offense seems to be a true game changer. Hopefully Saturday I'm dead wrong about that
I would say our TE depth is very good, not elite yet. I would like to see Brahmer and Burkle have better run blocking skills. They do not need to be at Rapps level but, I would like to see them improve on it. If they can show noticeable improvement in that catagory, then I would say the TE group is Elite. I think I see what you are alluding too for the WR room. Are you basing your opinion from the lack of playing time and that the depth is young and there are still some unknowns because KH has been the guy so far? I think our WR room is good, not great yet, but better than what we have seen for the last couple years.
I would disagree with the drop off aspect because of the run blocking abilities. Rapp is Elite in that category. Sounds like you are a prove it type of person, which I appreciate because I am the same way. Someone can be a 5* out of high school and I would still say prove it.

A lot of our WRs have significant playing time in their careers are none have demonstrated to be the game changer that Howard clearly is
I apparently like the other TEs more than most and agree Rapp would be a loss primarily due to his blocking as you and others stated.
