First of all I'm a Colt fan and always have been but there was a time when thy weren't playing the Colts that I would pull for the Cowboys. It does go back to the days of Don Meredith, Bob Hayes, Roger Staubach, Danny White, Chuck Howlie, Too Tall Jones, Calvin Hill, Charlie Waters, Randy White, Jethro Pugh and I can still hear Howard Cosell saying tight end Billy Joe Dupree. The list could go on with the great players they had. I like Tex Schramm (spelling) and Tom Landry. Even after Jones bought to team I liked players such as Emmitt Smith, Troy Aikman and Jay Saldi. What I want your take on is would it help the NFL if the Cowboys became legit contenders year after year. Back in those old days there was noting like the Cowboys/Redskins rivalry and to me Thanksgiving Day games involving the Cowboys were just bigger. OFC

It use to be America's team back in the heyday when they had much more class with Landry and Schramm. I was a huge fan in the 70's with the players you mention. Jerry Jones and the Panthers coming to Charlotte changed my allegiance. So to answer your question, I could care less now.

Hey Sky! I'm a huge cowboys fan!!! I grew up with my family being diehard cowboys fans so cowboys football runs in my blood!! There is nothing like thanksgiving when we all watch and root for the Cowboys!! The Cowboys are the only thing me and my family agree on when it comes to sports. Lol! I think it would help the NFL if the Cowboys were legit contenders year after year but then again I'm being biased! They are America's team after all:) I wish so badly the Cowboys would be like they were in the back in the day. There is nothing like a good ole NFC east battle especially when it's the redskins or Giants because of the pure dislike I have and other Cowboys fans have for those two teams. Eagles I don't like either but nothing compares to the dislike I have for the Giants and skins. The Cowboys gave me a heart attack today but they squeaked by the skins which was awesome. It would suck to be 0-2 in the division. The Cowboys should have won last week also.

I'm a huge sports fan who kept up with the NFL as a kid. I haven't watched a single NFL game outside of the Superbowl in about 10-15 years. Are there any others like me out there? I can't stand all the advertising and stoppages. I also feel like none of the players give a crap about the cities or teams they play for. Someone show me the light, because I kind of wish I was into it more.

I also think that football is very unique as professional sports go because of how few games there are each season. I don't think you need "that team" for it to succeed. Look at all of the cities clamoring to get a franchise to move there.

Couple the small number of games each season with the fact it's an American creation and I think you have a winning combination no matter what. I can't think of a franchise that is not selling out games. I've only ever been to 1 NFL game and those tickets were almost impossible to come by, and that was when the team was awful.

In sum, I think there are too many unique factors for football that don't require a hated or dominant team.

Some your replies about the Cowboys not returning to a perennial contender for the Super Bowl is the reason I could care less that unc never wins another game in any sport or score a point for that matter. It is my wish that they become the worst D-1 school in all athletics in all sports. I would of course love to see them retain teams in all sports so they would be a cup cake on our schedule every year. OFC

As a Redskins fan since I was a young kid, I have to agree with topps coach, I'd be happy if they never won another game, especially since they pulled off the late win over the Redskins today

I have usually been a fan of individual players rather than a particular team until the Panthers came into existence. I don't care much for Cam Newton but he is probably as good as any player has ever been. Favorite players were Roger Staubach, Namath, Tarkenton, Jurgensen, Unitas, and many others. I was also a fan of the many players that Sky mentioned along with most of the Packers and Steelers players. Todays players are more talented than ever due to speed and strength conditioning but the good ole days are long gone just like great baseball players of days gone by.

How about that Jack Lambert ? Pound for pound the greatest line backers ever. What was his playing weight about 215. OFC

I like him too. However, for me, the best in the business at any level is Blackledge. I'd love for him to do one of our games.

Was a steeler fan until we got the Panthers here in NC. Still pull for them when they are not playing the panthers. With that being said, I put the Cowboys in the same class as the Tarholes, Suckeyes, and the Sooners. Hope none ever win another game in anything.

My funny Cowboys story.

About 30ears ago I was hired to work as a waiter for my College. They had this big Superbowl dinner every year and I was hired to work it. I was in the alumni office waiting for my future wife that was also working the event when this older gentleman came in and sat next to me. We sat and talked for about 30 minutes. He had introduced himself as Tom.

I was not a pro football fan and did not make the connection at the time. I would like to think I would have recognized him if he had his patented hat, but who knows.

Was not until Tom Landry got up to speak at the dinner that I realized it was him.

That's an awesome story! I wish I could have been you! That's when the Cowboys were kicking butt under Landry!! He is the best coach the Cowboys have ever had in my opinion.

Good question. The answer is no. Now is it desirable for me, yes - I'm a lifelong Cowboys fan (but a couple decades younger than you).
Just look at the NBA. Would the Lakers/Celtics being contenders have made the Cavs/Warriors (which sounds ridiculous to people who have watched more than 5 minutes of basketball) finals any more interesting? I don't think so. Would last years Super Bowl have been better for football if it was the Packers/Patriots? No. How many people who aren't Cubs fans are rooting for them this year? I would guess more than any other team has people rooting for them who aren't traditional fans of that team.
Bottom line, I don't think the Cowboys being good or bad affects the NFL much.

No. Two teams make me vomit....the Cowboys and the Packers.

Go Vikes!!!
As a Cowboys fan living in the Carolina's, two teams make me vomit. Eagles and Panthers. The Redskins? Meh.....they're irrelevant.

I dunno. For me the skins and the Giants make me want to vomit. Personally I think eagles is the team in the NFC east that is irrelevant. Do they even know what a Super Bowl ring looks like?
