Imagine if we had Gronowski this year

I guess it's fun to play the what if game. But we have who we have. Given that we are supposedly the "youngest most inexperienced team in the B1G", games like Saturday are priceless as our guys gain experience. Buffington had 7 tackles all last year (7?) and he had that before halftime. Guys were forced to step up and did. Brown's audible that resulted in the bomb to Diaz might be one of the best audibles we've seen in years.

How much better do you think the Hawks would be with him? Just curious to what other Hawks opinions are?
The offense would be better especially on short yardage as we dont have the threat he brought with his legs and power. But it is a useless exercise. I am wondering where are sweeps with the running backs are as we mainly used straight ahead runs.

Need to run wide with your running back a good percentage for two reasons 1) trying to catch the defense inside and 2) make those big fat DTackles run laterally more often to tire them out. ISU's defense looked tired in the 2nd and 4th qtrs as it was.

Much better because he could run and, being healthy, could throw at least as well as Hank Brown. The defense having to account for 11 offensive players is a HUGE plus for the offense. That's not the case with Brown, although it would be with Hecklinski. But Brown is the conservative game manager KF craves, so you've seen the last of Hecklinski, except deep in mop-up time or in case of a major injury. Then Hecklinski will transfer at season's end.

Meanwhile, Iowa plays 10 on 11 and Lester forgets he has his entire playbook filled with creative plays and misdirection. Goin' on 28 years and some people still think KF doesn't put a straight jacket on his OC. Must be nice to live in Fantasy Land.

Depends which Gronowski. The one for the first third of last season has been outplayed by Hank thus far. Give Hank time, I have already seen growth from last year to game 1 and more growth from game to game 2.
And how much growth do you think we'd have seen from Hecklinski had he been given a chance? I mean the kid outplayed Brown by a million miles in the open practice. Everybody saw it. But KF was quick to say that didn't really matter, and the "competition" would continue. It continued because he knew Brown was his guy all along. For guys who were said to be dead even, that "competition" sure as hell ended pretty fast. LOL

Hecklinski is nothing close close to what Grono was, as a runner. And very little designed run would be used for him.

You seem to have an authority complex. Because most of the rest of the world would love to have KF as their football coach

They both played into the season, for God's sake! Competition into the season is not what's wanted at QB.

If Brown was KF's guy all along he would have named him the starter in camp.

You are ridiculous

I wonder if Kirk would have allowed a qb change if Hank had a couple more crappy series like the first few he had during Saturday’s game. He missed a few open receivers that easily would have extended drives. I know I was ready for a change.
I get you don’t want to play multiple qb’s throughout a game, but how do you stick with one for a whole game when there isn’t much separation between the two.

Julian Sayin and Ohio State play ten on eleven by your definition, so did Miami and Beck Last year. So I guess they are outdated and hamstringing their oc.

Healthy last half of last year Grono
Injured Gronowski lost a close one to the clowns...
There was no "injured Grono".

He couldn't finish the Indiana game. Then had a buy week, and played the rest of the season.

Grono's early season struggles in the passing game were due to his lack of familiarity in the offense, not health.

He was given a clean bill of health before the season

I think that our OC is ramping up the number of plays as the season goes on to make sure Brown can handle it all well, being the starter. I can be 80% right on what we are going to do, run or pass, based on alignment alone....and I am a goof in the stands. I think more alignment changes and play designs are coming. If I am damn sure we are going to run on 1st down nearly all of the time, I am sure the other team knows as well. Need to create space imho and if Brown can keep up the 70% clip, good things will happen for both running and passing.

Is this the same fantasy land you inhabit with your unverified Hecklinski takes? I love the wild conclusions people can jump to here.

I always find it amusing how often the QB is criticized for missing "wide open" receivers. I wonder how many typing these responses have ever had four to five 6'5 280 men bearing down on you when you are trying to see the field? Your line of sight is just a bit more impaired than when you are sitting with a cold beer in your hand. Sometimes that open man just can't be seen. I thought Brown played just fine, especially when he had a little time.

We would not be better with Gronowski - I'm pleasantly surprised by Hank Brown's ability to use his legs.

Mark's arm was very weak, therefore Diaz' talents would have been completely wasted.
Agreed, Heck wouldn't have been able to score on that zone read, we needed Hank's size and frame to stretch over the goal line. And man, watch that play again...Moulton saved the day with a great block on #0 from ISU (Myslinksi plain whiffed on him). Otherwise its a TFL and 4th and goal...yikes.

Haven't you been preaching to all the little people who know nothing about football about how NEITHER QB would be getting very many designed runs for them? I counted Hank getting 5 on Saturday (not counting the QB sneaks). Does that count as "hardly any"? So how do you know that Hecklinski wouldn't get any?

Please give us some more of your bullsh*t about how Hank wouldn't have gotten that many runs calls for him in a majority of Spiderverses.

Nope,.. He wasn't 100% early in the season.

May have needed reps to feel back to 100%.

But certainly, he wasn't "injured Gronk".

There was no structural damage.

And the inconsistencies in his play early, were much more due to not yet being comfortable in the offense

I've said little designed run outside of qb draws, which is a necessary play for every team, regardless of qb type. And 2 of the 5 designed qb runs were qb draws.

And the goal line qb run probably wouldn't have happened with Phillips healthy.

And what I've mostly said is neither qb will be Grono. That's the whole point here, as many seem to expect another Grono is on the team. There's not. Grono would get double digit designed runs.

And his build and mentality to take a pounding up the middle, made him unique even in the designed runner role. When it comes to qb power at A gap, pretty much Tebow and Grono have been the guys.

There's a reason TL had to study stuff to add to the offense for Grono's running ability. Because that type of player isn't usually on the roster

Thought I saw an interview with the ANF twins where TL admitted MG was really affected by the brace. Not injured...but just couldn't throw like normal. So it took a while to get use to it
It was very late in the season Grono ditched the brace.

Yes, he felt more comfortable.

But TL has also said it wasn't until later in the season that Grono felt comfortable in the offense

Biggest “what if we had him for one more year” player for me is usually Shonn Green. We still had an awesome year in 2009 with the young RBs, but having him would have been literally next level.

to the question asked - I think a healthy Grono would make this team incredibly potent on offense as he was way more accurate passing and dangerous running when fully healthy. Maybe less of a passing threat than Hank, but way more dangerous to pull it down and even punish tacklers (especially DBs).

You’re so FOS. There isn’t a single poster on this board who suggested that we had another Grono at QB. No one suggested that either QB would have 130 rushing attempts.

So, are 3 designed QB runs “hardly any”? How many would Stanley or Petras typically get? How many of Grono’s runs were QB draws, for comparison? And show me where you made the distinction between the two.
