In the end, another close loss

NU is playing better than I expected this year. The defensive effort is an especially welcome surprise. There's still no offensive flow, outside an occasional pick and roll. Basically this team just hopes that Audige or Buie gets hot one-on-one. Same old. And no plan at the end, as usual for Collins. Oh well. I didn't expect to watch many competitive games this year, so kudos to NU for the effort these last two nights.

Defense will keep you in nearly every game.

I don’t see how anyone can defend Chris Collins after watching that freak show of a game. There is no semblance of an organized offense. We don’t have the skill to not run sharp sets. It’s just horrendous.

Just please settle down. You have no idea what goes on in the huddle. It’s very likely Auburn’s defense cut off what NU designed and Audige had to improvise.

I’m sorry, you gotta win that game. Auburn played horrible and was ripe for the upset. It’s the little things again, bad shots, turnovers, stupid fouls and wrong lineup. The good teams win that game.

Good news is, a lot of the boys have a heart and play hard. Thrilled that Nancy is gone. Just wish we had Young to go along with big matt. By Barnhizer could be a really good, but probably won’t be developed or played enough here.

He’s coaching ‘em up. They’re playing with actual defensive intensity, and I don’t know where it’s come from. Growth from Berry and Barnhizer, who are both hardworking pests.

You don’t have to hear what’s in the huddle. You can see it with your eyes. Also, have to put the right people in the game. That’s a game you should’ve won.

Oh boy, now you’ve done it. Get ready to be scorned by sDakaGordie. It’s not Collins. It’s the fact that we have nobody who can make a play in situations like that. Get ready.

Gotta admire this team’s grit. In both games they started slow but grinded it out to close the deficit. They defend and rebound well. We need Roper but despite 0 years of medical training I predict Roper will be out a couple more weeks at a minimum.

Just trying to provide some rational perspective to a board which was called disgusting yesterday, and rightly so.

He’s a Collins fan. I get it. I’m just so sick of watching such poor executing teams.

This team will live and die on offense behind the 3-point line. Tonight, they died. 2-for-24 aint goin to get it done. Credit their defense and rebounding for keeping it close. Buie had some open looks, especially with a minute to go and up one, but he just couldn't connect. And what has happened to Barnhiser's outside shot? Audige seemed to be trying a little too much at times but with no one else scoring, who can blame him.

I get it. I actually don’t think Collins is a horrible coach. My opinion is he’s a decent coach. That’s it. His teams have been horrible at closing out games the whole time he’s been here. He has to take a lot of the blame for that.

So tired of close but no cigar. How many close games have we all suffered through over the past few years to see the inevitable el foldo at the end?

Ultimately it’s either a w or an l. That’s all it boils down to.

This wouldn’t be a bad approach. You can coach up D. You can scheme D. You can’t control made buckets. If CCC has a chance, it’s D. Not sure where the strength lies - can’t press to death - not enough ponies.

The only way this team has a chance is to have games like tonight in the 50s. Have a hot hand and boom.

MN is not being used any better than the RY / PN from last year. I get ccc. Where is Brian James in this? No idea what hunger might be but MN > the V.

Who cares. CCC either produces or is gone. Let him mismanage himself out the door. This team isn’t going anywhere anyway.

I also don’t think Collins is horrible — the defense is proof enough of that. But he has failed miserably on skills development. An Audige prayer was the highest probability option. Buie was bad yesterday and no one else can even try to create their own shot. Beran was the most disappointing. He should be a matchup nightmare with his size and shooting, but he is remarkably soft for a senior.

Boo and Beran aren't taking us anywhere, especially Beran. We will go as far as Berry and Audige take us. They are legit

I feel like NU basketball has patented the final minute loss to ranked teams where we could not make an offensive play to win the game. It leaves me bitter, disillusioned and cynical, like Scrooge finding out his Whole Foods turkey order got lost in the system.

Yes, and Gordie, how in the world do you seem to not see that this has been the case (zero flow or effective plan on offense) for the last five straight years? Regarding your love for CCC would you please put the bong down??

The MN turnover was what lost this one. Up one with 40 seconds left and the ball, Buie cuts to the basket and is open for a lay in but instead MN fumbles it low and turns it over, then lumbers late down the court and misses out on a blocked layup because of it. Not only do we not get a shot off on that possession, we give up the lead and ultimately, the game. If we had been up one on D in a half court set I like our chances.

I am watching a lot of the early basketball. The games are entertaining, but sloppy.

Yesterday’s game was sloppy. The defense was really, really good. We only have 2 players who want the ball at the end—Boo and Audie. Collins has not had this answer. Frankly, he should try Berry or Barnhizrr (sic) as end of the game options. Have to try something new.

Barnhizer is shifty with a great handle. He set up Audige nicely for a go ahead layup late that was all him by working his way down low the hitting Audige on a great cut.

I could see him becoming the NU equivalent of Brad Davison.....

Happy Thanksgiving.
And also:

1) Do you have nothing better to do than to try to bully someone on a message board?

2) We shot 25% against Auburn. What do you think is the probability that we make a high-pressure last-second shot against one of the best defensive teams in the nation, having shot 25% for the game (8% from three)?

3) Do you watch other college games? Please tell me how many you see end up in wins by some superior coaching intellect? And please tell me that all of the other coaching that CCC has done to so frequently get us to this competitive position in games is of so little value as compared to the one last-second shot?

And per above, too bad CCC can’t teach Big Matt the skills of catching and holding a basketball.

I want us to do better in close games; we all do. But, especially now seeing what has happened so far this year, I still don’t think we should have already thrown CCC out on his butt (like all the CCC haters said), and I frankly think I have had and still have a fair perspective on it (per above and many other posts). If you don’t like it, just accept it and live with it like a mature, grown man.

Not only against ranked teams. The Pardon layup against Michigan might be the last time we made a last-second shot to win or tie. It’s perplexing and maddening that our end-game strategy is always to go isolation and let someone go 1-on-1 because it never works. How do we not have two or three actual plays to run in these situations?

Go watch the l at play again. If Beran cut down the lane, it's a layup.

Plays are always going to break down, it what the better players do when that happens that leads to a win.

Also Tennesse used a similar offense to NU to just beat Kansas.

It's hard to believe that shot occurred almost 6 years ago
