...who are the most overhyped/overrated musicians/singers of all time?

My list would start with Phil Collins.

I never really understood the Kansas love either.

Dust in the Wind makes me want to slit my wrists.

The Eagles
Garth Brooks
Bon Jovi
Springsteen

Trying to think of an English band that is overrated. Maybe the Police.

As usual, this will turn into a ‘what bands do I not like?’ thread.

No one rates Bon Jovi highly. No one.

As for me, while I appreciate his career and many of ‘his’ songs, Elvis has always been overrated for me. He was a case of right guy at the right place at the right time. He’s not the only one though.

People from New Jersey act like Bon Jovi is Led Zeppelin. I realize you don't like the latter but most of us do.

If we're talking the word "overrated".. which to me, means how quickly your fan base would blow you.. It's Grateful Dead/Phish and there's not even a runner up.

Noodlin' on a guitar for hours.. that's worth seeing 67 times? That's worth TELLING ME that you saw it 67 times? Like it's some badge of honor? Phish/Dead fans were the very first group of people that I refused to be friends with. I haven't even fully ruled out ISIS..

Aerosmith and Rush for bands...vocalists: Beyoncé, Garth Brooks (single handedly ruined country music), Rhianna, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey...instant channel changes for me.

Overrated implies the band/artist has achieved a very lofty status which, in my mind, is unearned. Therefore, I nominate the Rolling Stones. They haven't done anything well, imo, since 1969 with Let it Bleed album. Yet, they're all in their 70's and selling out stadiums. I wouldn't walk across the street to hear Start Me Up

Phil Collins is pretty good if you combine his Genesis/solo together. But as some have said, Bon Jovi, Pearl Jam, Kansas, the Eagles, Springsteen,

Garth Brooks seems to epitomize overrated in the fact that he achieved tremendous commercial success while not really being great at anything.
Not a great vocalist
Not a great musician
Definitely not Willie Nelson as a song writer
Not even a good looking guy.
Guess he just appealed to the masses

A ton of musical ignorance on this thread already....and that isn't an opinion.

I agree with you on Brooks, Bon Jovi, and Springsteen, but totally disagree about the Eagles.

Garth's true talent is marketing and interaction with his audience and fans. I think he is a decent singer/song writer and in the 90's his show, persona and marketing was a great combination for success. Just my opinion.

Obviously part of that is in jest. I have a few dead heads as friends. I still want to blow my brains out when they talk about the last show they went to, though. It's a tough fanbase to talk about music with.

Totally agree. I actually like Garth, but he’s not in my top 10 of favorite Country singers/bands.

I’m pretty sure he doesn’t give a damn what I think, considering he’s worth over $300 million dollars.

The Eagles and Elvis overrated? [roll]

shew wee damn people, those takes are absolutely indefensible [laughing]
I agree.

Elvis is incomparable in my opinion. There’s Elvis, and then there’s everyone else.

The Eagles were/are one of the top 5 iconic bands ever. I saw the Eagles 4-5 years ago at Rupp Arena when Glen Frey was still alive. They sounded just as awesome as they did when they were young. A fantastic concert.

Exactly, I think some people cannot separate the art from the business side. At the end of the day, it is the music industry, not the coffee house.

I was talking with a musician friend of mine years ago and made the statement along the lines of, and don't quote me here as there was beer involved, I am sure. Anyway, I said I would hate being stuck having to play the same show every night for YEARS as those are the songs that made you.

The conversation dealt with bands that had just a few hits and still made a living touring.

He said he would love it as it would allow playing the new and fun music stuff at small gigs, home or with friends. The tour would pay the bills.
My buddy is generally full-of-it but he hit the nail on the head with that one.

1. Grateful Dead
2. Springsteen
3. Rush
4. Bob Dylan

Dylan has several songs that I love. I base my picks on if I would want to set through an entire 1.5 concert or not. Not.

yeah. LOVE Bob Dylan but when I saw him live it was probably the worst concert I've ever been to. He played every song off of his new album that 90% of the crowd probably didn't even know he put out. Then he played Mr Tambourine Man so different than what it sounded like originally that it was half way through the song before anyone realized what it was. He also played All Along the Watchtower the way Hendrix played it :\

Madonna. The top selling female of all time. However she isn't a very good singer and didn't even write her hit songs. She was good at shaking her *** and being controversial. Now she is just pathetic.

That was a good concert, especially the second half where Joe Walsh got to shine. Rupp was hot as hell that Summer night thanks to the band ordering the the A/C be turned off during the acoustic part of the show.

COUNTERPOINT: I would still nail Madonna -- even if I would rattle around in her like a pill in an aspirin bottle.

Also, the eye patch provides a good target.

Old school female vocalist: Celine Dion

21st century edition: Adele

Both have great range but one tone, loud as hell, and both remind me of a jet fighter taking off on an aircraft carrier.
