Incredible. We're going to be ranked.

Pitts was a senior in 1965-66 season which was my freshman year. I don't remember Sterling Burke. Dan Davis and Terry Hurley were from CPS. Mike Weaver, Jim Cummins, Jim Burns, Don Adams, Jim Sarno and Terry Gamber were on the 67-68 team.

Remind me that I recently read a good anecdote about how Don Adams got drafted...

Are you sure Hurley was from the CPL?

Steimetz--Chicago HS Player of the Year. Chem E. major but smarter than that. You could go broke playing him in hearts at a penny a point. Great shooter but a "tweener" with regards to guard/forward. I am not sure he watches this board but if Terry sees this-private message me

Although Dale Kelley was arguably the star of the team (he went to Galesburg HS which at the time was a perennial powerhouse in IL) the player I remember most from the 67-68 team is Don Adams who had a successful NBA career. He was a power forward before that term was in vogue..I distinctly remember( of course my 71 year old brain could be wrong) that he often grabbed defensive reounds with one hand.

I was a freshman at NU in 1967-1968 and attended all of the home games . The team finished in first division in Big Ten(8-6) but many critics thought that with better coaching (Larry Glass was fired next season) record should have been better(yes there were coaching controversies then but, of course, no online forums !). Highlight of the season was beating Louisville(led by Wes Unseld and #3 in the country at the time) .

Looking forward to the remainder of this season. After the Pittsburgh game, did anyone on this board believe the Cats might be 3-0 in the conference ?
Larry Glass resigned . He departed by saying something like "If I couldn't win with this team. Northwestern needs a new coach"
The 67-68' team had Jim Sarno at center backed up by Jerry Sutton. Point guard was Terry Gamber. Shooting guard was Dale Kelly. Forwards included Don Adams Mike Weaver . Subs- Dan Davis, Stirling Burke, Terry Hurley . I believe there was a 3rd center also

Thanks , just really just forgot that. Somewhere around these times NU also got commitments from two Catholic League player. One named Hicks, I think. Nether actual saw the floor for NU, as freshman were not eligible then and thinking that they both left after their first year. Did get to watch them some as freshman, during scrimmages and games against JC's and Wheaton's of the world. and think they would have definitely helped.

Thanks for clarifying on Glass. I didn't think he was fired. Little could he know at the time, but he had a 'great' run at Northwestern. Solidly competitive.

(please don't shoot, just asking for discussion and we all know college hoops rankings are mostly just win move up/lose move down level voting)

Why should Northwestern be ranked on Monday?

- 6-1 with no wins over teams that will be ranked in the top 25 on Monday and a bad loss to Pitt.
- Nowhere near top 25 on KenPom or Torvik
- only 3 wins all season vs KenPom top 300 opponents

Not looking to dump on NU in any way. The Wildcats are off to a hell of a start in conference play so far, just feel it is probably in the neighborhood of 50/50 that they are actually ranked on Monday. The wins over MSU and Indiana have lost a bit of luster since then (MSU was severely overrated even at the time) and who knows how voters will actually handle that.

Hope they are ranked but there are valid arguments why they would not be.

Look at the B1G standing rn. You’re not gonna put a 3-0 B1G team that’s atop of the standings in the top 25? Especially with how strong the B1G is this year.

My aging brain forgot that Larry Glass resigned. Although he was not fired I distinctly remember numerous "Glass Must Go " signs at home games in 1967-1968 and 1968-1969 so he was under pressure to leave NU. He was only 28 years old when he became head coach at NU (he was 35 years old when he resigned) . Later he was a successful women's HS coach in Leland MI

There have been plenty of people on this board who indicated they thought it was time to move on from CCC. CCC is the right guy for the job and we are lucky to have him. And next year will be the first full roster in a while.
Plenty of us have also said we might have been wrong.

MSU will probably still be ranked. Since the last ranking they've lost one game against a top 10 team. They're not going to drop from 12 to unranked for that. OSU might still be as well. Lost to NU, but also have a big win over Rutgers since the last ranking.

It should be a no brainer they will be in the top 25. Michigan State is an easy top 25 team and will be at the end of the year. It is a long season and while Michigan State is not playing like a top 5 team right now they definitely have top 10 to 15 ability.

even if MSU is overrated (they did beat a talent rich Duke team in Durham), they’re a damn good team. IU on the road and OSU are solid wins (OSU just beat a good Rutgers team). We are undefeated and in first place in the best conference in the country. That deserves a ranking. I also don’t necessarily believe we are truly a top 25 and the upcoming stretch remains brutal. But at this moment, there’s a strong argument to rank the ‘Cats.

I didn't say there is no argument to rank them. I hope they are ranked. I'm just saying objectively there are plenty of reasons they would not be ranked at this point. The Pitt loss is a massive negative compared to most top 25 teams. The 3 wins are nice, but none of them will likely be ranked on Monday IMHO.

Why is the Pitt loss a "massive" negative? They're a decent ACC team that may be as good as Minnesota, and we lost by 1 point to them after leading the whole game. It may be a massively disappointing loss, but not a "massive negative". We beat 2 ranked teams already and a tough Indiana team on the road.

I will take the over on Michigan State winning 9 conference games. I will also take the bet that Northwestern is in top 25 next week. Being in the top 25 at this point is much less important as starting 3-0 in Big play. The conference will be brutal this year but we could not have asked for a better start.

3-0 in Big 10 = Top 25.
This team is still a year ahead of what I expected. I love the uptempo offense, aggressive defense, effective bench and the joy they play with.
Go Cats !

Should be ranked on Monday, right? They got a handful of votes last week and went 2-0 with a win over a ranked team this week. That ought to do it.

That was more than hard-nosed defense that started that run with 5, 6 or 7 minutes left in the 2nd half (whatever it was). Was that the first time the Cats pulled out a match up zone in the game? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was.

I love how they are switching defenses this year.

I remember Adams and Kelly were still on the team during my year at NU in '69-'70. They weren't as good as that earlier team, but were competitive on occasion. Had a nice upset over a Rick Mount Purdue team that year if I recall. I couldn't attend that one because I had a long paper to write. Game I remember enjoying the most, even though we lost, was the one with Iowa, the B1G champs that year who somewhat resemble this year's Iowa team. Iowa won 115-101, one of of 13 times they topped 100 points that season without a shot clock or three-point shot. Hawks were led by future NBA players John Johnson and "Downtown" Freddie Brown.
