They didn't have a choice. Sampson got a show cause penalty back then. It wasn't like he got a slap on the wrist and they fired him. But prior to the NCAA's decision, he was rebuilding them fast and if he hadn't gotten in trouble then they would have been back in contention.

They’d have lost a scholarship. As if you need them all. That was his punishment.

Had IU kept him, they'd have faced pretty bad sanctions & fines. They didn't have much of a choice.

Indiana is Indiana because of the decisions the program makes and has made for over 35 years. You don't stay terrible for a third of a century accidentally.

Saying they "could have been a problem" is like saying George Armstrong Custer "could have been president" if he had just avoided making bad decisions around Indians.

The Hoosiers had two choices. Just like keeping Bobby "the Bully" Knight too long, hiring Mike Davis, hiring Tom Crean, hiring Archie Miller, hiring Mike Woodson, and dozens of smaller decisions, doing the wrong thing was inevitable.

It is that simple. You can fake not having any more violations

They should fight like Kansas and UNC. Unscathed.

Louisville and Indiana are the dumbest institutions I’ve seen. Tried to self punish and it cost them.

It's really not that simple. You're vastly underestimating how different NCAA enforcement was in 2008. Sampson didn't coach in college until his show cause was up because literally not a single school would hire him. There couldn't have even been a McNeese St. Will Wade type situation. He was radioactive. Indiana seriously didn't have a choice.

He could only find an assistant role in the NBA until the show cause was done.

there is something more to his firing than phone calls and him facing minor punishment from the NCAA, you dont fire a good coach over that. I've heard there might have been more of Bobby Knight worshipping boosters not liking that Sampson didnt kowtow to their every wish, even heard people say if he was white they'd forgiven it more but saying its the race card in maga land is too easy to claim, but who knows. we just know for sure it wasnt just extra phone calls even if he was on probation, the ncaa wouldnt have done much punishment for that

The NCAA literally did hand down substantial punishments for that. He was given a show cause penalty. Indiana basically had no choice but to fire him. Keeping a coach with a show cause is an open invitation for the NCAA to wreck your program.

The fact that not a single school would hire Sampson until the show cause expired should tell you all you need to know about the seriousness of the penalty at the time.

I was going to say, the NCAA was a different animal back then. They are toothless today, but I dont blame Indiana for making the decision to part ways. Back then you couldn't put cream cheese on a bagel without Mark Emmert trying to crawl up your ***.

I don't like IU but the punching down from some of our fanbase is beneath our program.

Well what's messed up is they changed the rules just a year or two later so what he did wouldn't have violated any rules.

Yeah they were dumb, I think he got a show cause back then though. Maybe schools should have challenged in court way earlier. Thankfully they would never even hire him now even though they have no worries in the world. They are still so holier than thou when it comes to who they hire,
