I have been to a lot of NU games over the years and have never been around a whinier, more obnoxious fan base. They complained about the officiating constantly throughout the game. I get being upset by Buie's last shot and whether or not it was a push. They have a right to at least question that one. But I heard comments like that after the FIRST HALF, when NU kicked their *** in every phase of the game. Fans, and even IU media members in the media room were blaming it all on the refs. "Trayce is getting fouled on every play." "The refs obviously want Northwestern to win." They gave no credit to Northwestern for a sublime first half. There was no accountability for IU making just six shots or letting NU's offense get any shot it wanted for the entire half. It was all the refs' fault. And the refs amazingly didn't miss any calls in IU's favor; every call benefited NU. (By the way, in the final tally, the refs called 13 fouls against Indiana and 16 against Northwestern. IU was awarded 20 free throws, NU 14.)

Maybe the ugliest thing I saw was a group of IU fans who got into a verbal altercation with one NU student journalist in the press row in the first half. I have no idea what it was about, how it started or what was said. I was on the other end of the row, pretty far away from it. There was pointing and yelling back back and forth. But this one IU fan -- a guy in his mid to late 20s, probably a recent grad -- stood up, beer in hand, and just started pointing and screaming at the kid, "You're a geek! You're a geek! You're a geek!" at the top of his lungs, over and over and over again. It went on for an unbelievably long time, to the point where his buddies next to him just sat down and stayed quiet. Media members should never get into arguments with fans in the first place, but that was an indicator of the vitriol level of a frustrated, pissed off IU fan base, looking for a scapegoat. Their beloved Hoosiers were getting beat -- again -- by little old Northwestern, and they couldn't take it.

I didn't think it could get worse than the whining the Purdue fans did but it was. Someone actually complained to me about the smoke gun going off before the final buzzer over the hoop Hood-Schifino's last heave was shot at. As if that affected a 3 quarter court shot that actually hit the damn rim!

IU's fans were much, much whinier than Purdue's on Sunday up in my section.

I'm sure Iowa's will be reasonable and grounded this weekend.

Couldn't agree more. It started early on and seemed like pretty much every possession they were whining about the refs. It's a big ten basketball game, what do you expect. The complaints were so hilariously one-sided too.

IU fans had a lot...a lot to ***** about. If you understand the game, it was not whining...it was bitching, and it was and still is legit.

The moving screens were astonishing. We (BIG) need to educate our officials on what moving screens are and get them called.

The game was a wrestling match and this type of officiating is killing our entire league in the tournament. Northwestern does not benefit in the tournament by being allowed to play this way all season.

Funny how fans of teams that lost complain about stuff like this. It's universal.

If you are looking for sympathy, try a psychotherapist.

There are no “Big Ten” refs. These guys work every conference. I turned on a Mountain West game a couple weeks ago and Larry Scirotto was working the game. Acting like there’s going to be some mythical change in the NCAA is just untrue. There are many other factors that come into play.

BIG teams (all of us ) are hurt in the dance when the game is called more on finesse and less on wrestling. Look at the results and talk to people from all teams. And, yes, refs have primary assigments. LS is a primary BIG official, especially now that he was fired from his real job as a cop.

The officiating was sloppy and was not biased for any one team. Where was the obvious call on the egregious goal tend "block" by TJD on Big Matt when the ball was clearly in the cylinder of the rim? That gave me bad flashbacks to the Gonzage non-call in the NCAA game. Another one that comes to mind is when Galloway was trying to dribble around Berry and stepped on another player's foot, causing him to lose his footing and bump into Berry -- foul called on Berry. Rigged!

I love that NU is getting a defensive personality. That is a skill that translates every year, every game, every player, every recruit. I remember when John Thompson started coaching at Georgetown and implemented suffocating defense by excellent athletes. Teams just could not handle it as it embarrassed them.

The NCAA Tournament requires more finesse play? I thought it was more a group of cage matches.

Ahhhh, there it is. The classic IU line.

And I generally have little problems with IU fans.

For any IU fan, this is simple. If you want to b*tch about the fouls, fine. But you also better be talking about missed free throws and - not one - but TWO incredibly dumb technical fouls.

Allow me to educate some IU folks. That's what lost you the game.

I’ve found lots of IU fans to be pleasant in the past. When they’ve been good (by their standards in recent years/decades), and they win, they’re friendly/arrogant. Pat on the head. When they’re down, they gripe a lot about their team, which is fair game. But this year, they can kinda taste the glory years a little, so their latent blue blood entitlement is bubbling to the surface. And they cannot HANDLE that Northwestern has swept them. It must be a conspiracy. It’s all so unfair. How rude the students are, etc.

They expect NU to be a nice little team to play, in a nice, tame little venue. Neither thing is true this year, and they simultaneously have elevated expectations, so some of the ugliness is spilling out. To me, it’s fun. We are playing with house money, the season is special, and the vitriol is a nice change of pace from the patronizing indifference.

I had the opportunity to watch a the IU-Kansas game in December in the home of IU grads, and they couldn't be nicer. They also had lots of good food. And IU lost the game and we were allowed to smack talk a little. It helped that a former 7'0" KU star was in the house as well, just in case the regularly-sized KU fans like me got out of hand.

Like all fanbases, there are good people and bad people. The bad people are usually louder. Nothing to see here.

And to think a poster from this board went to IU’s board to apologize on behalf of *our* fanbase. Sad!

No apologies warranted for a turncoat. He was the whiner who left. Great to see that in his final game at WR he scored 3 pts in 26 minutes (although he made a key defensive play that almost turned the tables). He's been an over-rated disappointment for two teams

If they insist Boo Buie pushed off on the last shot, are they blind to the fact that the IU player defending him could have been called for a blocking foul as well? It looked to me that Boo lowered his shoulder into him when he wasn't set. That's not an offensive foul at all. If anything, refs should have awarded Boo the and-1, which would have driven the IU fans even more apopleptic. 😂

Bask in their tears, Wildcats fans. Like every other entitled Big Ten fanbase, they expected lowly Northwestern to roll over and the refs to sniff their faded glamor program jocks. I am loving every tweet and post whining about the officiating, how the Cats foul every play, and how all Northwestern students and alumni are nerds. Which is it, are we bullies or nerds? Both, I guess! I was going to tweet how IU only had so many fans in the stands because they are the receptacle institution for all of Chicagoland's UIUC rejects, but thought the better of it. 🤷‍♂️

Let me educate you. I was at the game. Your players threw stupid passes, dribbled off their feet and missed a ton of open 3's. None of that had anything to do with the officiating. It's easy to throw out generalizations (it was a wrestling match) when you lose. I will go back and watch and look for all of these disgusting fouls that are killing our chances in the tournament! What a joke! You know what kills our chances in the tournament? Not enough truly great players and dynamic scorers compared to other conferences. And you guys got crushed last year because you had to play a bunch of games in a few days because you barely made the tournament. Nothing to do with the officiating.

And I am very, very confident it's whining.

We the fans need to educate the officials…😂

You know what’s killing B1G teams in the tournament? Playing **** basketball and being less talented than the ACC, SEC, and PAC. But sure, blame the small private school that has made the tournament once and took a 1 seed down to the wire.

OK, sure, and I'll educate you on the fact that NU has won 5 of the last 7 in this series, and that we're 14-11 against IU in the last 15 seasons. Clearly, it's all the refs' fault - we're not worthy of you, Our Indiana.

To the tune of John Mellencamp's "Rain on the Scarecrow"

Boo pushed on that last shot, moving screens galore
Students yelling curse words with Miller on the floor.
The officiating was so bad, life is so unfair.
Losing to Northwestern is just too much to bear.

Boo pushed on that last shot
Moving screens galore
That ref went to NU
He made the final score
And now we're all just angry
Our butts are all so sore

Push on the last shot
Missed fouls galore
The ref went to NU
He made the final score

Used to be Northwestern couldn't beat a high school team
They recruited nerds from prep schools. They usually got creamed.
Suddenly they're winning games and heading to the Dance
None of it makes sense to me. They don't even have Pete Nance.
It's gotta be an inside job. They get every call.
Two technicals in the first half pretty much says it all.

And students behind the goal yelling expletives all night
The AD needs to say something because I don't think it's right.
I've never seen as much injustice as that game Wednesday night.

There'll be crying on the forums
Blood on the keyboard
Tears on the forums
Blood on the keyboard

Well there's 97 fouls that went uncalled last night
97 moving screens somehow out of sight!
I think about that referee
And conspiracy thoughts emerge
Last night I saw it happen
The Big Ten needs a purge!

Push on the last shot
Missed fouls galore
The ref went to NU
He made the final score

Push on the last shot
Missed fouls galore
Such an abomination
We got jobbed ever more
Now I'm just sorry that my butt is so damn sore

Push on the last shot
Missed calls galore...
