Installed A New Dishwasher That Has Me Baffled

Replaced the old with the new and not my first rodeo.
Drains into the disposal under the sink just like the old one.
When I hooked it up, I kept getting an "error code" that meant not draining properly.
Dragged the DW out and checked for a kinked hose.....nothing.
Wrestled with that thing all day leveling and everything I could check.
Took the hose off at the disposal to check for an obstruction....nothing.
Finally, stuck my finger inside the disposal where the drain line connects and the PLUG is still there.
Knocked it out, hooked the drain up and it works fine.
Now tell me how the old one drained for years with that PLUG still there. No way it could have been bypassing it.
I can't figure it out.

If the plug hadn’t been knocked out then the previous dishwasher didn’t drain, or wasn’t hooked to it. If you say it did you are lying.

I think this is right. I had the same thing when I replaced the disposal. Water shot out above the sink. Took everything apart and a plug was in there.

If I had it to do over again, and wasn’t claustrophobic, I’d be a plumber. The independent ones I know are rolling in it.

The old unit drained fine. Never any water came up in the sink. I can't figure it out and it bothers me.

Lol.... it is success, but I wrestled that dishwasher all over the kitchen trying to figure out what the problem was. I guess I'm OCD about why things happen.

Vent...meaning air gap. There isn't one.

Why is there not a vent? it acts as an overflow in the event of a clog. but I guess that's why yours has the error codes to alert you to a clog.

Chuck, I bought a house and had an appliance guy take a look at the appliances as I was considering getting some new ones. He ran into the same thing. I have no idea how the previous owners were able to wash the dishes, and the dishwasher was 10 years old.

No. I've done this a few times in my life and if you don't use an air gap you have to make a "loop" the drain hose under the sink.

That’s incorrect. It’s there to prevent back flow and cross contamination in the potable water supply.

Your post brought back a bad memory of me getting financially ***-raped by a plumber when I was selling my house in Maryland to move to my current job.

We had an older home and the water line developed a galvanic cell between the original cast iron pipe from the city supply to the copper going into the house. It was leaking during inspection after we had an accepted offer, and we needed to close the sale so I had no choice but to get it fixed.

Not really knowing anyone well enough to get a personal recommendation, I picked out a plumber who had advertised in my church bulletin. By this time I had already started my job, leaving my wife behind to finish things up.

He charged me something like $1500 to fix it, and under the circumstances I had no leverage and no opportunity to shop around, and had no choice to pay him out of the proceeds of the sale.

Major ***-chapping and bitter experience.:angry:
