I don’t really see any reason to leave for another team other than the NBA. At this point he’s proven to himself he can win a title at Florida so I can see him thinking the NBA is the next challenge. It’s basically exactly like Donovan.
I agree, the NBA is probably where he ends up. But if he wants to stick to college, I can see why he wouldn’t want to play second fiddle to football. He seems like that kind of guy, more than Donovan at least. Some coaches want to basically be lauded by their school’s fans, administrators and boosters. And Florida simply can’t offer that this anyone but the football coach.

It shouldn't be that hard to understand.
Man there’s a few trolls here that are intentionally being obtuse to keep arguments going. I’m convinced we’ve got the same person or 2 that does this. No UK fan is going to want to miss a shot at that in this moment for Pope. They don’t exist. There might be some that want to give mark a 3rd year, but to me even they would trade tonight if riven the real chance. Almost all.

Look, I’d love to have Golden, but he absolutely came out of nowhere last year. His resume was no better than Popes when Pope was hired. I mean let’s not just start making stuff up. Goldens rise has been extremely sudden.
I remember a lot of people in Calipari’s last year here saying Golden needs a serious look if Calipari goes. Remember there were quite a lot of people saying it actually. It was pretty obvious he was going to have the potential. And now we know it. So my main point is if pope is middlin next season, he needs to be replaced. Go get the sure thing or as sure if the thing as can be. You don’t retain Pope in his mid 50’s and pass on a young guy like Golden who’s obviously a better bet. All I’m saying.

Pope doesn’t work out it needs to go
1. Fire Barnhart
2. Fire /make step down Pope
3. Hire new AD
4a. Hire Golden
4b. (if not) Hire Pearl
4c. (if not) Hire one of Oats/Otz
5. Hire GM

in that order
Pearl is pushing 70. Screw that. Go after Golden/Lloyd (dude just whipped KU's *** and is primed for a FF run)/Oats in that order.

I want Will Wade personally. Just has that kind of personality that thrives at a school like Kentucky.
Never. Dude was literally cheating his *** off. You don't want that at Kentucky because the NCAA microscope would be insane.

It was a lot of naming of Golden, Hurley, Donovan, Pearl and Oats. I would have been happy with any of them. Barnhart didn’t look at any them though 😡

That or your 63% quote means nothing, especially when four or five posts above this you’re creaming for Oats a career 69% coach with a larger sample size. I like you, Morg, but you’re far too intelligent for these cheap talking points. Pope has a job to do and if he doesn’t do it well enough, he will be gone. Until then, simply try to be sincere, like you were with Pope three months ago. I didn’t hear a damn word about 63% in the off-season. For good reason. It means nothing. What means something is the 19-10 which hasn’t met anyone’s expectations. Gotta be better.
Well Oats has a final four at Alabama the first coach in history to do it. Who knows what he’s capable of at Kentucky. He’s also an excellent evaluator. There’s no way I’d stick with Pope if we could have oats it didn’t make sense. There is a big difference in Alabama and Kentucky basketball. He doesn’t even have a good NIL. And 69% is well above 63%. That’s a wide gap my friend. He’s younger too. Albeit I keep thinking pope is 55 he’s actually 53 and turns 54 sometime in September I think. So he’ll be 54 next season. Oats is 50 or 51.

There isn’t a comparison in Oats and Pope man. It’s a wide gap.

I will say a lot of experts and fans were really high on Golden before he won a title last year. Plenty people were even asking why we didn’t go after him instead of jumping on Pope. But it’s done. Probably ends up at Kansas/UNC/NBA at some point because as long as Mitch Barnhart is here, Pope isn’t going anywhere as long as he makes the tournament, performance be damned. (I hope the boosters take over)
Yep we’ve got a lot of people not remembering this. There were many people saying Golden needs to be taken a look at before his title. It was obvious he was going to be a good one. Experts also. Matt Jones mentioned him several times. Before the title b

It’s very possible. And if we did get him, we’d be worried about it all all the time. That’s true. Might turn into a year to year question, and I really hate dealing with that. But Donovan was open to Kentucky and according to several insiders at the time, would have left Florida for Kentucky but he wanted the pros.

There’s just a massive step up from Florida to UK. It’s a much better job. I could list many reasons for that. Florida has done well, but it’s just not a basketball place. These coaches want it all. And resurrecting Kentucky is a dream situation. It’s bigger than anything Florida can offer and here they don’t fight against football.

Sorry, calling BS on this hindsight narrative.

In that offseason, Todd Golden had:

  1. Only been a head coach for 5 seasons
  2. Had never finished with fewer than 10 losses (a 24-10 season at San Francisco)
  3. Had coached the Gators for only 2 years, and made 1 NCAA tournament (lost first round)
  4. Never won an NCAA tournament game
  5. 2 of his 5 seasons as a head coach were losing seasons (including year 1 at Florida)
  6. Career record of 97-67 (69% winning percentage)
THAT is the head coach you would have been happy with in that offseason?

Explain it to me, seriously, I am putting you on the spot. WHY should Golden have been WAY above Pope in that offseason?

If you have good reason, fair enough, but I am dying to know what those reasons would have been.

We wanted Hurley after he won a chip. Now we want Golden? I’m sure whoever wins this year we will want them? I personally don’t want a coach that won somewhere else. I want a coach like Cal. Got extremely close but didn’t get it done. Comes to Kentucky and gets it done. That’s why I wanted Pearl. He would still be drooling to win one.

I’m not a fan of begging for another teams coach that’s already won. Feels like sloppy seconds. I wouldn’t be mad if we got Golden but he lucked up on that title. We need to find the next Todd golden or Hurley.

oh wait I forgot “this is Kentucky “ we don’t hire potential up and comers. We hire 55 year old never weres…. Maybe Pope has single digit losses at least once in his career right? I say we keep giving him time to figure this out. Also we need to recruit Jon hoods and Trent Noah’s from now on. Quit going after Stokes and any other top recruit. We don’t want those type of players.

they only brought us one championship and several final fours and multiple sec championships with several 30+ win seasons. I can’t stand dominating. I hope we stay with Pope forever. At least until he’s pushing 70. The next coach will have a chance to get the all times wins lead back if he’s successful 30 years straight. Let’s get so far behind that when we do hire a coach we aren’t even looked at like the “mighty Kentucky” let’s become mediocre to keep mediocre coaches interested. “Pope didn’t t get fired ..maybe the fans aren’t that crazy “ let’s keep the expectations lowered. Winning demands 2 much effort.

Two coaches under 45 stand above the crowd and both would restore UK to its former glory. Scheyer and Golden. Scheyer will never ever leave Duke and will win championships there. I actually think Golden has a chance to hang a second consecutive banner at UF. I think he would likely take the job at UK. Pope will have another year to right the ship and advance beyond the sweet 16, win the SEC, and lose less than 10 games in a season. This is the UK Gold Standard and it is fading into oblivion .

Golden could win 2 and still take UK. Golden is not going to remain at Florida for a career. If you talk to a lot of Florida fans online they don’t believe it either, although they think he’ll end up in the NBA. But who knows, if he sees a Pitino legacy or coach K situation in the making, take UK and do it where it counts.

and they’ve had Napier which left Golden as BMOC. His run is probably over now that they have Sumrall.

Like I posted. Golden develops players and his players execute great on both sides of the ball. His teams only get better as the season progresses. All signs of a great coach and will win several nattys if he stays in college. Love to see him here but don’t be surprised if he ends up in Kansas unless he bolts for the nba.

Syracuse is a great example of an almost Blue Blood fading into oblivion even with the largest arena in the country. Hoping this never happens to UK but it has been a while since we have made it beyond the sweet 16 and have not won an SEC tournament game in 5 years?

I’m not arguing for or against Golden if we need a replacement, but the accusations didn’t turn out to be false.

The university investigated the claims as a “Title IX” issue and because the events happened at non athletic events the Title IX allegations were shot down (which the plaintiff’s attorney refuted and said there was plenty of evidence some of the stalking happened while he was working).

I think the digital nature of the Instagram stalking, dick pics, etc. means there was probably plenty of evidence that he was doing weird stalkery s hit. The university investigated it (conveniently) in the context of Title IX like workplace sexual harassment.

I think there’s no doubt the guy is a great coach. Whether you want to believe he did something gross as accused and if that does or does not represent someone you want to see as the head UK coach is up to each individual fan.

Honestly I have mixed feelings about him being a candidate if Pope doesn’t work out. It’s one thing to cheat at NCAA rules like paying a player or whatever (Calipari at Memphis stuff), or just being an obnoxious as shole (Hurley).

It’s another to commit crimes in your personal life, especially ones of a sexual nature. But in a shocking twist, powerful interests won out and he was cleared of wrongdoing, so any judgements would be self-inflicted on my part. Winning cures all and all that.

My initial hope is that Pope ends this year on a strong note and makes huge and promising strides next season, as in Final Four. Then these hypotheticals are moot. Many on here seem to think Pope will never have it. Maybe they’re right I don’t know but my life experiences have led me to not be so absolute in my own thinking about something that hasn’t actually happened yet.

Also the fact that Mitch is still the AD of UK after the swimming situation is the biggest scandal in UK sports history that not a single damn outlet anywhere including homegrown seems to care about.
