I've only gone through Boston College and Clemson, and I already don't like some of the inclusions/exclusions. Olivier Hanlan over Dana Barros? Please. Also, don't like Horace Grant left off of Clemson's list. He's the only Clemson player to ever win ACC POY.

Overall I didn’t really have a problem with the 5 players that they picked for Duke’s starting 5 and as great as Jay Williams was I would pick Bobby Hurley over him just because Hurley was a part of 2 National Championship teams.

I had no problem with the picks, but when he said up front Duke was one of the easier ones to pick... it seems like that ought to be the case when there's a dearth of good players. As great as those 5 are, only Grant and Laet are absolute locks. There's a strong case for Hurley, JD, and Shane for the other 3, for example.

I agree dat. If you start considering the one and dones and they did because of Zion another 10 or more players could be legit. I don't understand why they said it was easy.

We've had 8 players in that time span (1980-2019) that have won the Naismith NPOY. So yeah, definitely not easy to pick a starting 5 for Duke. On top of that, you have all-time greats like Hurley and Hill that didn't win the national player of the year honor, but they both merit consideration.

Johnny Dawkins, 1986
Danny Ferry, 1989
Christian Laettner, 1992
Elton Brand, 1999
Shane Battier, 2001
Jason Williams, 2002
JJ Redick, 2006
Zion Williamson, 2019

Good research. Add Hurley and Hill you get 10. Not easy. OFC

I have to have Hurley and Battier on the team instead of Jay Williams and Grant Hill. Not a slight to them though.

Laettner is the greatest college player ever. He's a lock.
Zion is the most transcendent college player ever. He has to be a lock.
At SG, there was no one better at Duke than JJ. He's a lock.

The debates are at SF and PG.
I'm with the author, Grant Hill over Battier and JWill over Hurley. Both of those selections on pure talent alone. But lucky for us, those guys combined talent with incredible attitudes, hustle, and smarts.

Elton Brand would be the first one off the bench, then Battier. After that, it gets messy.

I would think Duke would be the hardest five to pick, by far.... Shane Battier for example.

Big Luke Maye being left off the list is a punch in the gut to the Hole fans. Zion literally did not score in the first 2 UNC games. Maye scored at will.
